How long to get a new V5 logbook for car?

I'm having a BAD day! My dog is crying pitifully because she was spayed today and it appears I've been driving illegally for months !
I swear to God I taxed my car in August when the MOT was done the same month.
Only to find today..I hadn't. What's worse is I cannot find the V5 (or the MOT cert so presumably together) ANYWHERE. Not in the folder where I keep all car docs, and I have turned the house upside down.

Which means I cant tax it (can't believe it hasn't been picked up either..I drive to work every day!) until I have a new logbook... I can order one tomorrow.

Does anyone know how long they take to arrive? No idea how I'm going to manage in the meantime either!

I've recently bought a new(second hand) car and the V5 arrived in about a week so hopefully you won't have to wait too long. But if you have the tax reminder you can do it online and I'm pretty sure you don't need any documents, just the reference number on the reminder. They check everything else on the DVLA's computer. I've not taxed my car in person for ages now, its loads easier online.

I bought my car brand new and they said six weeks for the V5, turns out they had the wrong address for me. I called the DVLA and they were very helpful. It arrived two days later.

I'm echoing MrsA, you can do it all online now if you have the tax reminder. You need the code/ref number that's on the reminder to do it. Then apply for a new V5, it'll be back in less than a week.

We lost all of our paperwork, including house deeds, mortgage paperwork and the V5's for both our cars. We applied online for the V5's, there was a fee to pay but it was fine.

We only found the missing paperwork this week when we pulled the Christmas stuff out. Someone had stashed it up there and forgot.

That's the problem..I don't have the tax reminder.. which is odd as I save it and tick it when I've done it! It's either somehow been thrown (ages ago) or it never arrived. I can't tax online as I don't have the reminder and I can't find the V5 :(

Someone I know moved recently, I helped order her new change of address v5 online, it arrived in two days which I thought was impressively quick.
Dvla can probably sort your tax on the phone tomorrow. Don't drive until you have got it done because insurance usually isn't valid for an untaxed car.

This happened to SIL too, it seems to be easily do without a piece of paper with the date to remind...

It has been a little while since I worked in the contact centre in DVLA (I work elsewhere there now so this could have changed) ring DVLA, they used to have a process where you buy a replacement V5 over the phone and can tax at the same time.

I had this issue a couple of weeks ago. Rang DVLA, had to pay for new log book, then the chap also took payment for the car tax.

You can print the MOT information online and tax your car a Post Office that does this for a fee of £25 plus the cost of the tax.

That's what I did when I bought a car recently and the seller couldn't find the logbook when I went to pick it up (I had seen it previously and I think it was a genuine error rather than something dodgy and he did give me £25 cash to cover the fee).

My new logbook came in a couple of weeks or so.

Sorted... thank you to everyone who posted.
I managed to speak to a nice lady at the DVLA who taxed it for me (and I paid the owed tax..thankfully not much as it's a little car) and I just have to psot off the V62 and cheque to get a new log book.

Turns out I hadn't misplaced anything.. the bloody dealer I bought it off... last year... never sent off the logbook so I never recieved the new V5.. I've been driving it nearly a year not registered to me! We have 5 cars here (5 adults) so I had assumed it had been filed when it just never existed!

They must employ nice people at DVLA - refreshingly cheerful and helpful. Glad you got it sorted.

I'm amazed you managed to get through to someone at the DVLA - I had the same problem in August. Glad it's sorted.
