Lasagne - what do you put in yours

Lazysundayafternoons · 02/12/2020 14:25

Last minute decided lasagne is for dinner today as I have mince I need to use up.

I usually put in mushroom, peppers and courgette but havent got any of these.

I'm thinking of putting in peas, maybe cauliflower aswell. It sounds like it will be nice to me... or am I going mad and it sounds horrible?

What else do you put in yours incase I have it in the cupboards/freezer?

Bacon
More bacon

RedTawny · 02/12/2020 14:28

Sorry but I think peas sound gross in lasagne. Saying that I always put some chopped carrot in, and bacon

Wallabyone · 02/12/2020 14:28

I think cauliflower and peas might be a bit odd 🙈 I put spinach in if I have it in, mushrooms, carrots, celery.

my bolagnaise has onions, mushrooms, peppers and grated carrot in.
I also put spinach on the top and then cover with the sauce/cheese

Good job I checked! I thought I might have been going crazy.

Dp has a three hour drive home from work today so the least I can do is make him a dinner that's edible Grin

I put anything in mine, peas, sweetcorn, mushroom, onion. Whatever we have in.

Baaaahhhhh · 02/12/2020 14:48

You can put whatever you want in it, but it won't be a proper Lasagna. Personally anything "lumpy" in a lasagna is not nice, so no bits of vegetables. I just do the basic, meat, onions, garlic, tomato, wine. If I have it I will add spinach in the layers, but also further to other threads, no cheddar or cheese sauce, just parmesan.

dementedpixie · 02/12/2020 14:51

Celery and carrot blended up together. Onions, mushrooms, garlic. Not sure what else.

Imtoooldforallthis · 02/12/2020 15:28

Made one yesterday. Chopped onion, leek, garlic, red pepper. Grated carrots, sweet potato, courgette, mushrooms, and would normally add anything else veg wise, either chopped small or grated.

Peas and cauliflower in a lasagne?
Call it pasta surprise or something but don't call it lasagne.
walks off in a huff

Sometimesonly · 02/12/2020 15:37

Finely chopped carrots, onions and celery are the only acceptable vegetables in lasagne!

elmfield4 · 02/12/2020 15:48

Onions, red pepper, courgette, aubergine, mushrooms and garlic all diced finely Grinlasagne is my favourite tea!

Witchend · 02/12/2020 15:51

My mum puts raisins. Not keen, but others like it.

When ds was about 2yo he was helping me to make the lasagne by chopping the mushrooms with his little toddler knife. I was making the sauce and when I turned round he'd added a chopped apple, grapes and cherry tomatoes from the fruit bowl. I didn't tell anyone until after they'd eaten it and no one complained.

mrsbeeton999 · 02/12/2020 16:37

Pepper onion mushrooms garlic red wine oregano passata Worcestershire sauce

lazylinguist · 02/12/2020 16:43

Confused at all the weird vegetable additions! Finely chopped onion, (plus optional carrot and celery), garlic, mince, passata, red wine (which I skip because I'm intolerant to it Sad). Cook slowly for a long time. Cauliflower in lasagne?!

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/12/2020 16:47

NO not cauliflower.

Lazysundayafternoons · 02/12/2020 16:50

Sorry @Ihopeyourcakeisshit but 🙈

@Witchend yours sauce must have been full of flavour for them not to notice that Grin

Im making it tonight, so garlic, mushrooms, peppers and onion, tin of tomatoes.

Bluntness100 · 02/12/2020 16:53

No, no carrots celery cauliflower peas courgettes or anything else 😱

I’m Italian, onions, garlic, passata, olive oil and a little sugar to sweeten the tomatoes. Maybe some mushrooms or peppers. I’m from am an Italian family.

My husband made a weird Chilli Bolognese thing the other day, when I walked into the kitchen he’d added parsnips and carrots. I honestly couldn’t face it. 😂

StickTheKettleOnAlice · 02/12/2020 16:58

We make a large batch of spaghetti bolognaise with onion, garlic, celery, grated carrot, mushrooms, tinned Tom's, tom puree, italian herbs, seasoning, Worcester sauce. We then save some for the next day and make lasagne with it adding either becamel sauce, parmesan and mozzarella or ricotta for the other layer.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/12/2020 17:00

@Lazysundayafternoons I returned to this thread to give you my lasagne recipe but then had to go for a lie down after reading about @Witchend and her mother's raisin abomination. Almost makes yours look civilised Wink

StickTheKettleOnAlice · 02/12/2020 17:01

@Bluntness100 that's so strange as carrot and celery is traditional in authentic Italian bolognaise and lasagne sauces. Hmm maybe it's an area thing?!

dementedpixie · 02/12/2020 17:12

I thought soffritto was the basis of lots of Italian sauces including bolognese
