When's the last time you went in an actual Debenham's store?

It was half a decade ago for me. I don't buy from them online either.

They don't seem to have moved with the times?

Probably a year ago, just to cut through to the Bullring from Grand Central in Birmingham. It was the less crowded option in the run up to Christmas. That’ll be two large stores gone from that part of the city, seeing as John Lewis has closed for good.

Before that, just to use the toilets in the one in Manchester on the way to the football about three years ago.

LifeOfBriony · 01/12/2020 20:50

September or October, I think. I like some of their stuff - Mantaray, Wallis, Phase Eight, John Rocha and others. It was great for wedding outfits a few years ago, although they stopped stocking those brands the year after I needed them.

Some of their home stuff is nice - I bought some pillows recently.

I will miss Debenhams - I prefer to try on clothes as I don't always fit a standard size. There's more variety in Debenhams than M&S or Next. I've no idea where I will shop for clothes in future if there is no rescue.

jambeforeclottedcream · 01/12/2020 20:52

They were good for summer stuff like sunglasses and a fab bikini I brought a couple of years ago.

I brought my first adult handbag from there which lasted years and was used to death

Our local one (two floors, so not tiny), didn't sell women's jeans! It was the only department store in our town, so I occasionally went in for concession stand makeup, but the staff were always so rude, I normally vowed never to go again. In the last few years I've been waiting until we go to a bigger town / city and shop in JL instead.

The shops were rundown an dirty. It's no wonder people didn't want to be there

ritzbiscuits · 01/12/2020 20:59

A few weeks ago to cut through to the car park. I remember thinking to myself how it felt like going back 20 years (and not in a good way)

Hope4theBestPlan4theWorst · 01/12/2020 21:05

Lincoln and Nottingham are my nearest and both are rubbish

Nottingham's building needs condemning its so dark and depressing

Lincoln - I agree the perfume staff stare at everyone as they go thru making people feel uncomfortable

I haven't bought much from there recently but have done in the past but mainly online

twilightcafe · 01/12/2020 21:05

They were good for bras with small backs and large cups.

MuchTooTired · 01/12/2020 21:07

I last bought something from Debenhams two years ago, and think I went for a wander round the store at the end of last year but didn’t buy anything.

I’ll be sad to see them go.

Oblomov20 · 01/12/2020 21:08

Quite a few times. To buy perfume. And twice for a personal shopper. One of those times, She did a dress, shoes, handbag outfit for Ds2's holy communion. Free. Totally fabulous.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 01/12/2020 21:08

Just before lockdown. The Milton Keynes one. I don't think it ever re-opened.

It was a good cut through to the shops. I used to get perfume in there and the odd bit of clothing now and then

Chimeraforce · 01/12/2020 21:10

Bought from there last autumn. Used vouchers from our debs credit card.
Last visited around July August it was deserted compared to primark. I love debs clothing.... Just too pricey for me so stuck with primark or George.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/12/2020 21:11

Just before lockdown. I'm gutted.

Now that Debs and John Lewis are gone from Birmingham, I'll probably not bother going shopping there anymore. There's no pull.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/12/2020 21:12

My go to jeans are from there 😭

Pipersouth · 01/12/2020 21:14

I used Debenhams a lot - lots of work type clothes

CoffeeRunner · 01/12/2020 21:16

I go in quite a bit because where I live it’s about the only proper shop. If you want clothes the choices are Debenhams, Peacocks (tiny branch) or Tesco.

For things like bedsheets & household items it’s either Debenhams, Tesco or B&M.

If I went shopping in the nearby bigger city centre I probably wouldn’t bother going in however.

H1978 · 01/12/2020 21:16

There’s a 12 minute virtual queue to get on the site. 😳

Redcrayons · 01/12/2020 21:21

In January, I bought my dad some slippers and PJs as he was going into hospital for an operation in March . I also bought myself a pair of shoes for £1, they came up on the till wrong and she honoured it.

I always used to have a mooch around whenever I was in town. Its in the same row as Top shop and Dorothy Perkins. It’s going to be like a ghost town.

londoncrawling · 01/12/2020 21:23

The one in Edinburgh is lovely, bright and spacious and easy to get around. Every other one I've been is has been awful.'

TickTickClock · 01/12/2020 21:25

I've been into the flagship on Oxford Street several times in recent years (not THIS f-ing year obviously!). It's unbelievably dark, shabby & understocked. Why anyone would shop there when you have John Lewis 100m in one direction and Selfridges 200m in the other, I have no idea.

DianeChambers · 01/12/2020 21:27

The northern town where i currently live will really suffer with the loss of Debenhams. We don't really have individual decent shops. We have the concession stands in Debenhams, pound shops and not much else. Sad

Hope4theBestPlan4theWorst · 01/12/2020 21:32

@H1978
Are people remembering what happend with Laura Ashley when they went bust
Loads of people ordered stuff and never got it
I'd suggest only buying from an actual shop where you physically leave with your items

Good point! Maybe don't trust to getting your bargainous Debenhams stuff online!

I vaguely remember the beauty part of the lincoln. But I didn't really notice it as I never needed to go in there because I got my beauty stuff else where

TheySeeHerRowling · 01/12/2020 21:39

The Debenhams in my smallish coastal town is the one and only department store type shop for miles

It was well kept - no jumble sale rails here - and nicely laid out, clean with helpful staff

I went to the Costa with dd every Saturday after her dance class, and we'd have a bit of a browse whilst there Dd liked the Miss Selfridge, Warehouse and Quiz concessions, I liked the costume jewellery and Benefit counter, and would buy bits from Manta Ray and Maine for summer holidays

I will really miss it, and so will many people in the area Sad

tinytemper66 · 01/12/2020 21:40

My first job as a Saturday girl in 1982 in the cafe in Swansea Debenhams. Last went into Debenhams in February.
