When's the last time you went in an actual Debenham's store?

It was half a decade ago for me. I don't buy from them online either.

They don't seem to have moved with the times?

The last day before lockdown.

Longdistance · 01/12/2020 19:42

About five years ago I went to the cafe in our local Debenhams and watched as shop lifters walked out with their loot. T’was interesting.

Molehillfromamountain · 01/12/2020 19:44

Last week, it's one of the few shops left in our area. I used to visit the cafe regularly on maternity leave, they staff were lovely with my little one. Sadly they all lost their jobs during the first lockdown. Now the rest of their colleagues will too.
It will be a loss here.

Very recently. Our nearest has a nice Costa in it, and I like the Mantaray clothes. I'll be sorry to see it go.

@SteakBake4Me

I mainly used to used two before I moved away from Yorkshire - a smallish one in Harrogate, and a bigger one in Leeds. I loved the Harrogate one in the late 90s, because it had Storm bubble watches and Kangol stuff Grin we used to go round the perfume concessions asking for free samples.

Moved to the north east a few years ago - I’ve been in the one in Newcastle a few times but not regularly, I think the last time was in about 2015 when I was looking for a fascinator for a wedding.

I had a storm bubble watch bought from Debenhams in Harrogate. We used to love a wander round the ground floor amongst the make up.

@AlexCabot

Ages ago. The last one I went in was Lincoln and I walked out after ten minutes as it was boiling. I was visibly sweating and feeling quite dizzy so I legged it.

I've never really liked department stores as they usually have very little natural light, especially on the upper floors and it makes me feel quite uncomfortable.

I generally found Debenhams to be overpriced and badly laid out. The customer service was often quite lacking too.

Lincoln is now my closest store and it is awful. The perfume staff are vile and look you up and down and it is always dark and hot in there. DH liked John Rocha clothes and Ben Sherman etc. I’ve only ever collected Tripp luggage from there.
jambeforeclottedcream · 01/12/2020 19:58

The lincoln Debenhams was particularly grim. I remember the men's dept because you had to Walk through it to get the rest of it and it was really dark.

Wonder what will come of that massive Debenhams at Clapham junction

alltoomuchrightnow · 01/12/2020 20:00

My local one..start of the year,.. it's been shut since..
I went into the Newbury one a few months ago and could see why they are struggling..it was dreadful...and closed at 4pm!! I work in retail myself until 9pm every night...(well I work beyond that but close to public at 9)...shutting at 4 is nuts...

MrsJBaptiste · 01/12/2020 20:05

I like Debenhams, I bought some fab pumps there over the summer.

We have two near us, I'm not keen on the one in Leeds but the one in the White Rose centre is great. Sad times 🙁

AlexCabot · 01/12/2020 20:15

I do have fond memories of going to see Father Christmas at the Portsmouth Allders which then became Debenhams.

I feel dreadful for all the retail staff facing unemployment, it must be terrifying for them.

TillyTopper · 01/12/2020 20:17

I don't think I've been in one since the 1990's! DP last bought something in a Debenhams in 2004 (ish), he says he's since been in for trousers but he didn't buy anything.

pinkdragons · 01/12/2020 20:21

I used to go a lot though when I lived nearer to one.

Sewsosew · 01/12/2020 20:25

I get clothes from them all the time. Mostly principals and mantaray. I used to get DD stuff when she was younger (but online as the stuff is terrible in store).
I’m annoyed they ruined the homeware department.

lunar1 · 01/12/2020 20:25

The end of Debenhams has been coming for a decade at least. It's more like a jumble sale, how bhs was at the end, and how WHSmith is now.

Crap falling on you at the till as they try to sell random chocolates. I went in debs with a £100 voucher in February and couldn't find a thing to buy.

user1493494961 · 01/12/2020 20:27

I buy a lot of Mantaray stuff, I'll miss them.

anascrecca · 01/12/2020 20:27

I went to the Trafford Centre one about 6 weeks ago and got two pairs of jeans , 3 tops and a bra.

enjoyingscience · 01/12/2020 20:33

Last month, looking for kids wellies (they had no wellies.).

I thought sports direct had already taken over - it had that slightly desperate vibe and loads of really tacky gifts.

Such a shame for the staff, they can’t do anything about the stock they’ve got and it was clearly game over for them ages ago.

I wonder if there is a future for department stores now, especially at the mid range.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 01/12/2020 20:33

January 1993. I was looking for a hat for my second wedding in the February, so I can be precise Grin
It was Middlesbrough, and the first, last, and only time I ever went in to one.
I didn't find a hat there.

Oliversmumsarmy · 01/12/2020 20:35

Just before the first lockdown. One near me I don’t think has opened again.

Wouldn’t buy clothes in there as it was way too expensive but I think I bought a boards game.

Tigger001 · 01/12/2020 20:42

Just under 3 years ago,I felt everything was overpriced and not great quality.

MangoM · 01/12/2020 20:46

DP likes to go there for socks!

I've bought my winter coats from there the last few years as the petite collection is proportioned perfectly for me.

I'll be sad to see it go.

grafittiartist · 01/12/2020 20:47

It's the only place I buy bras from.
Stuck now!
What a shame for the staff and the city centres.

vampirethriller · 01/12/2020 20:49

Between lockdowns for the cafe and toilet. To buy something, over 10 years ago.

Daisychainsandglitter · 01/12/2020 20:49

Their kids stuff was great.

1moreglassplease · 01/12/2020 20:50

I'll really miss it and they used to be my go-to for homeware back in the 90s and 2000s. I love Mantarey and some of the concessions. My home town only had Debenhams since our M&S closed last year so now we'll have no department store.
I work near Oxford Street branch and loved to pop in and browse at lunchtime. I went in a week or so before second lockdown and was shocked to see the concessions gone and just rows of sale racks every and no new stock for autumn \winter.

My last purchase was in July and I bought a present for my mum of a fab waterproof jacket from Mantarey which she loves.

Staff in my local store were great and so helpful so feel very sad for them, especially at this time of year.
