What are your really petty pet hates?

It really annoys me when I'm walking behind someone and you can see flashes of white on the bottom of their shoes where they haven't peeled off the labels. That's the first thing I do when I buy a new pair of shoes, peel off the sole labels!

What is it with the new way people talk? Making a statement and raising their voice at the end as if they are asking a question ?? It annoys the hell out of me, and what is worse is I know that one day I will end up doing it which annoys me even more.

People who type “would of” or “should of” instead of “would have” or “should have”

SummerTimeSunshine · 05/12/2020 00:21

Posters who mention “picking up a few bits...”. Argh! Bits? Bits of what?

Thankfully I have never heard the phrase being used in real life.

The modern habit of pronouncing Something or Anything with a K at the end. Even some BBC presenters are beginning to do it. Drives me bonkers

MidnightHangingTree · 05/12/2020 12:11

I watch a lot of American true crime programmes and for some reason not a single person on these shows (police, lawyers, accused) can say 'District Attorney'... they all seem to say 'Districk Attorney'. Now that I've noticed it I realise how often it gets said and it drives me mad Blush

Bloodypunkrockers · 05/12/2020 12:21

People not pronouncing ing at the end of verbs

Pritti Patel is the worst

ShortSilentNight · 05/12/2020 12:26

Though of another other big offender I ought to have noted in my earlier post — “niceeeeee”. Agonising

ShortSilentNight · 05/12/2020 12:28

Thought, sorry (just a typo — wouldn’t want to upset anyone here by dropping a final consonant Grin)

AdelaideK · 05/12/2020 12:38

Adults who say mummy and daddy.

My bus being more than 30 seconds late.

People who scrape their knife on the plate.

PeanutButterCheesecake · 05/12/2020 13:03

Middle aged women who say "I know right". Trying so hard to sound like an American teenager, and actually sounding like a total idiot. It's even cringey on a text message 😖

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 05/12/2020 18:41

Gregg fucking Wallace. Every skills test on Masterchef he asks 'how long are you giving them for this?' Twenty minutes Gregg. It is always twenty minutes. Stop shaking your head and acting surprised. They're not going to say three hours and ten minutes, you twat.

GrouchyKiwi · 05/12/2020 18:56

That's not a petty pet hate, Bunch. That's a hate that is righteous and pure. Cherish it.

Middle aged women who say 'oooh I'm so down with the kids, me' just because they know the chorus of a song that happens to be in the charts right now.

(I'm a middle aged woman who knows nothing about rap music and would never claim to).

MsHedgehog · 05/12/2020 21:36

@Viryanth

I do that! Not deliberately, and I didn’t even realise until DH pointed it out to me! I’m trying to stop it but I never realise I’m doing it...relieved to see it’s common as I had no idea where I picked it up from!

MrsAvocet · 07/12/2020 19:53

I'm finding myself irrationally enranged by the word "take" being used with reference to the Covid vaccine. Since when did we "take" vaccines? I've never heard this turn of phrase before. "Are you going to take some paracetamol?" yes, as that's something you actively do yourself, but surely it would normally be "Will you be given the vaccine?", "Are you going to have the vaccine?" or "Would you accept the vaccine"?
Where's all this "taking" come from?!
I'm sure it is completely unreasonable of me but it makes me feel extremely irritated when I hear it. Almost as annoyed as I get when non Americans use the word period instead of full stop in fact. Grin

Spottybluepyjamas · 25/12/2020 08:03

People who say mortified when they mean something else (usually annoyed), and seem to have no idea that it means embarrassed. Really winds me up!
