How worried are you about climate change

Just been watching something on outline that says in 100 years the sea level will rise at least 1m

Do you think that’s true it will rise that much ? 😰😰

AfterSchoolWorry · 30/11/2020 22:14

Yeah, I believe it but i give it almost zero thought tbh.

megletthesecond · 30/11/2020 22:17

Very. It's going to get so much worse.
I'm really making the extra effort to crack down on the dc's eating meat and swopping to more veggie and vegan meals. It's bloody hard but for the sake of their futures it needs to be done.
I walk a lot and don't get the car out often. Never fly.

nicky7654 · 30/11/2020 22:18

I spy no attention to it. Earth has experienced so far at least 5 ice ages and it is constantly changing.

Lardlizard · 30/11/2020 22:19

I think we need even more cycle paths and encourage the use of e scooters and e bikes on the cycle paths
Strive to get e cars as standard ASAP

Lardlizard · 30/11/2020 22:20

Nicky do you think there’s going to be another ice age ?

OP posts:
AfterSchoolWorry · 30/11/2020 22:21

But electricity comes from coal and gas, e cars will still be powered by burning fossil fuels.

Lardlizard · 30/11/2020 22:22

But can’t we get it form wind and water and solar

OP posts:
megletthesecond · 30/11/2020 22:25

Our council recently consulted about how we can reduce the town's carbon emissions. I really went to town about cycle paths and better footpaths. And got in a good moan about people killing biodiversity by astro turfing their gardens.

Lardlizard · 30/11/2020 22:28

I wonder when sandbanks in Poole could end up underwater and Venice 😰😰

Pyewhacket · 30/11/2020 22:34

You’d have to completely change just about every aspect of what would call “modern living”. And there will also have to be huge advances in technology especially around battery and electric cell development. Plus there would have to be some control on population growth. I’m not sure if that is all possible but at 42 years old working in the NHS in an ICU unit during a pandemic I’ll worry about it another day.

Hopeislost · 30/11/2020 22:34

Yes it is worrying!

On electricity, most UK electricity comes from renewables. Very little is generated from coal, and the few remaining coal power stations must close by 2024. The cheapest way to produce electricity in the UK is wind, so there is lots of investment (government and private) in expansion.

emilyfrost · 30/11/2020 22:35

I’m not. I really couldn’t give a shit.

emilyfrost · 30/11/2020 22:36

@Lardlizard

Nicky do you think there’s going to be another ice age ?
We’re still in an ice age.
HappyHedgehog247 · 30/11/2020 22:40

I have been slow to properly grasp the urgency but David Attenborough’s latest programmes are very clear. We’ve gone plant based but not doing enough.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/11/2020 22:51

I know that climate collapse is going to kill our children and grandchildren within a 100 years.

I don't worry about things I can't control. 🤷‍♀️

I tell everyone I know that they shouldn't fly (I want the entire travel industry to collapse) and that they should use public transport as much as they can, eat as little meat as they can.

CryptoFascist · 30/11/2020 23:08

People who say things like "I really couldn't give a shit" obviously don't have children.

I have a child. I still don’t give a shit.
Lardlizard · 30/11/2020 23:21

Emily are we ? I didn’t know that

Laurie - so no one can ever go abroad?

Tootsietoot · 30/11/2020 23:26

@emilyfrost do you really not care about the effect in your children? Fucking hell. Poor kids.

emilyfrost · 30/11/2020 23:27

@Lardlizard

Emily are we ? I didn’t know that
Yep.

Earth is currently in the Quaternary glaciation, known in popular terminology as the Ice Age.[1]

Tippexy · 30/11/2020 23:29

Not a jot.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 30/11/2020 23:36

An ice age is when part of the planet is frozen all year round, so yes we are technically in one. That doesn't stop climate change from being very real and very concerning.

Lardlizard · 30/11/2020 23:43

So much I have yet to learn
Had a terrible education really

TheMotherShipAhoy · 01/12/2020 00:06

Very worried. Like you Laurie, I really worry for my DC. And feel awful for families in other parts of the world where the impact of climate breakdown is already forcing people into poverty and displacement. They're generally the people who have contributed least to carbon emissions and benefited least from the kinds of infrastructure that depend on large scale use of fossil fuels.
Here, our neighbourhood looks set to be under water at some point during the second half of the century, and our local authority's long term strategic environmental measures don't go anywhere near far enough to ensure we are protected. People around here know it, but feel powerless to challenge the LA. Cynical.
My childhood village, not far from the arctic circle, has gone from snow so deep between October and April every year that it would cover me from head to toe (standing up!), and my brothers earning a bomb from shovelling snow off people's roofs through the winter, to a powdery smattering of first snow in January, barely covering the ground, and disappearing within days. A few summer's ago, uncharacteristic hot and dry weather caused forest fires to tear through the huge forests in the north, ravaging homes, farms and forestry.
Yep, I am worried.
