Weird appearing and disappearing monolith. Any theories? Aliens?

leavethelightson · 30/11/2020 21:39

First it appeared in the Utah desert, then just as weirdly as it appeared it disappeared.

Now a similar one has appeared in the middle of nowhere in Romania.

So, a door to an alien world? Is this how 2020 turns out?! Shock

As good a theory as any I suppose! Grin

Students or soldiers playing pranks.
Romania would be a copycat.

You can see the rivets. I know aliens might use rivets, but it seems so low tech

Lilimoon · 30/11/2020 21:57

Any chance of a link OP? Ta in advance.

I'm thinking that aliens smart enough to travel here undetected from a planet out of our reach to detect life signs would also be smart enough to give the human race a very wide berth.

Here's a link.

I do think if aliens were to visit this might not be the best time!

The overshot with the grinder as well in the bedrock in Utah. Amateur aliens at best. Thin strips of metal riveted together badly is not what I'd come to expect from a greater life form, but everything I'd expect from bored students having a laugh.
FedUpAtHomeTroels · 30/11/2020 23:08

They aren't the same one, the Utah one looks smooth, the other looks like it has swirls from a polisher. It's a copycat.

Gancanny · 30/11/2020 23:48

My money is on some sort of viral marketing campaign.

leavethelightson · 01/12/2020 08:25

Yes, they don't look totally alike.

I'm still holding out for amateur aliens, would be a nice change from covid!

Maybe it's student aliens - on a gap year Grin

BoudiccaD · 01/12/2020 10:54

It will probably turn out to be some kind of advertisement.

FadedRed · 01/12/2020 11:01

The monolith is not the only ...ehem ....‘monument’ to have mysteriously vanished recently.

ClaudiaWankleman · 01/12/2020 11:14

Does anyone remember the Simpsons episode where the 'skeleton' of an angel is dug up, who warns that 'The End' is coming? The townspeople all gather, and it arrives... 'The End... of high prices!' and the new Springfield mall is opened.

I do see parallels.

TheFlis12345 · 01/12/2020 11:15

It will be some sort of marketing campaign, I’m in the industry and most people think it will turn out to be for a computer game.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/12/2020 11:17

My theory: some twat

It will be some shit doing the environmentally wank thing of welding metal together and using petrol to go somewhere inaccessible

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 01/12/2020 19:20

They're not the same - the surface is completely different. I mean, they both look quite nice if whoever would just leave them alone...

leavethelightson · 01/12/2020 20:51

It's on the move again, it's not in Romania anymore!

OP posts:
lifestooshort123 · 01/12/2020 21:47

Yes, a promotion for a computer game sounds a good bet. Get people talking about it, fuel their interest and then...
Well, mumsnet is on board.

Yep, that'll be it! Grin

Apparently a third one has appeared now, on a mountain in California. Monoliths seem to have taken the place of crop circles, as the preferred way for people to fake alien activity. Could be a clever marketing ruse, or some bored teenagers who've raided the scrap metal yard. Either way I'm looking forward to some humourous takes on this by comedians on Have I Got News For You and The Last Leg, this Friday.

HermioneWeasley · 03/12/2020 21:31

It will be a marketing campaign for something. A video game or movie most likely

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 03/12/2020 21:37

Probably is something like an adult campaign or art installation.

Though after this year nothing would surprise me, even if it was announced that there was scientific proof we'd flipped over into a parallel universe!

picklemewalnuts · 03/12/2020 21:47

They are causing problems, so I don't think it will be an official marketing campaign. Who wants to be held accountable for trespassing, encouraging sightseers to trespass, and the environmental impact it's had?
