How much time do spend reading books?

I’m just interested in what others do. I would love to have more time for reading. The reality is, I probably do have time for reading but find it hard to justify spending time reading (but spending time arsing around in mn doesn’t seem to need justification Hmm)
When do you read and how much time a day do you spend reading?

I read quite a lot and don't regard it as a waste of time - it's self care and food for the brain. I am retired now, though, when I was teaching I really only had time to read in the school holidays.

riotlady · 29/11/2020 15:21

I vary- sometimes I don’t read all week and then I get into a good book and read a couple of hours a day. I like to keep a list of what books I’ve read over the course of a year so I know I average about 30 books a year.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 29/11/2020 15:23

I’d love to read more but I find Mumsnet things that distract me. I’ve read 25 books so far this year.

When on holiday I read a book a day. When not, between my kindle and audible I manage a book a fortnight

isseywith4vampirecats · 29/11/2020 15:30

i go to bed an hour early each night and read before going to sleep, so about two books a week, take books on holiday with me so whenever sitting round the pool i have a book on the go, i was lucky had two parents and a godmother who at an early age instilled a love of books in me and its stayed with me all my life sadly my children havent followed me

Hillbillybo · 29/11/2020 15:32

Usually about one a week.

If not working one every two days.

BefuddledPerson · 29/11/2020 15:34

Making time for reading was going to be my NY resolution this year as I rarely get lost in a novel these days but used to read lots. I still read non-fiction but not fiction and I feel I am really missing something very integral.

theliverpoolone · 29/11/2020 16:18

I read for about 30 mins each night in bed, longer if I'm really engrossed. I've read so many books this year!

Sirzy · 29/11/2020 16:19

About 18 months ago I started making a real effort to read more rather than just sitting on my phone. Much better escape

Squirrelblanket · 29/11/2020 16:42

I read 2-3 hours a day, maybe more at weekends. I read in bed. Usually at night but sometimes in the morning too.

I set myself a target of 120 books this year on Goodreads but I hit target about two weeks ago. I'm going for 150 now! Grin

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 29/11/2020 16:47

I read in bed at night and often in the morning too, now I’m not tied to an alarm. One or two books a week probably, but if a book doesn’t grab me, I often abandon it.

Jolonglegs · 29/11/2020 16:48

Usually in bed before sleep. Get through about one book every 2-3 weeks, but depends on size.

lanbro · 29/11/2020 16:49

Every night, have for years. On holiday easily a book a day, normally 1-2 a week depending on the book

SlothWithACloth · 29/11/2020 16:59

Thank you all. This is very motivating.
@Squirrelblanket that’s an amazing number of books. I can’t imagine remembering them all if I read that much. So impressive.
I’ve started a really good book but I still can’t seem to bring myself to read during the day. I’ve bought so many books this year with the intention of making the list of lock down and staying in and I’ve still only read about 5 books this year.

I read a lot, aiming for a minimum of 10 books a month. We hardly ever watch TV so I read most evenings, and whenever I get a free moment really. I also listen to audiobooks whenever I am doing anything that doesn’t require my full attention - cooking, cleaning, ironing, getting dressed, walking with the dog...

Pipandmum · 29/11/2020 17:04

I read a lot of magazines but I make sure I read at least a chapter of my book every night. I try and read for about half an hour, but at least a chapter. I do it in bed so not likely to get distracted.

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue · 29/11/2020 17:09

It varies a lot. Sometimes I don't read at all for several weeks. Sometimes, if I'm really enjoying a book, I might read for an hour or two a day. On holiday, I usually read 2 or 3 books in a week. I don't think there's any right or wrong amount of reading to do - 1 book a year or 1 book a day are both fine - as long as you enjoy it.
