The halo certainly saved him.

pussycatinboots · 29/11/2020 14:59

Thing is, the car really isn't supposed to split in two and the fuel tank is supposed to remain intact.
How that man is alive, I will never know Shock

FairfaxAikman · 29/11/2020 15:00

I wouldn't blame him if he was to retire with immediate affect.

It just goes to show that all their safety measures have a huge part to play and as a PP says the advantage made in even a few years has meant the difference between life and death.

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2020 15:00

I didn't know much about him but have had a quick Google and he has children aged 7, 5 and 3. Lucky children. Phew.

Aren't the wheels supposed to stay attached too?

@wheresmyhairytoe he's very lucky to get away with minor burns and broken ribs, It's a miracle.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/11/2020 15:02

Fuck me, I've not seen anything like it in many, many years.

They've just said on here it wasn't the tank going up, it was split fuel lines. If the contents of that tank went up, nobody would have got close to the car.
pussycatinboots · 29/11/2020 15:03

Sky news are showing footage of him climbing from the car and of the impact.

pussycatinboots · 29/11/2020 15:05

Sparkling Yeah, they're supposed to be "teathered" to the car, but they do still come off depending on the impact.

ajandjjmum · 29/11/2020 15:07

Shocking - a miracle excape. A big ask for the other drivers to start the race again - I bet the average speed will be down significantly.

Sparklingbrook · 29/11/2020 15:07

I remember when Martin Brundle flew upside down at Melbourne was it? You could see the plank of wood attached to the bottom of the car IIRC. Do they still have that?

OP posts:
pussycatinboots · 29/11/2020 15:08

Phil Isn't the fuel tank in the back of the car though? behind the driver?
So how did the front of the car go on fire when the back of the car (engine and tank) are still in the kitty litter and not wedged under the on fire barrier? Shock

Glittertwins · 29/11/2020 15:08

Seen the reports on BBC sport app and it looks shocking. Good to see him out of the car.

addler · 29/11/2020 15:09

I imagine he'll be out now for the rest of the season since there's only three races left. To only have minor burns and some broken ribs after that, couldn't really imagine a better realistic outcome.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 29/11/2020 15:10

It hit a barrier at 150 odd mph. I dont think you can say a car isnt supposed to split in two with that sort of impact. Wheels come off, they are tethered because it is known they will come off.

Its miracle he walked away, its a tantamount to modern safety engineering he did. Even just a few years ago he unlikely would have. Really didnt think he would, very lucky.

ginsparkles · 29/11/2020 15:10

Fuel cell is in the centre of the car. Horrific accident, not seen anything as bad as that in many many years. Thank god for the Halo. Also lucky in the place the accident happened, help was very quickly on hand. So glad he is ok. Frightening incident.

pussycatinboots · 29/11/2020 15:12

Sparkling take a look at the pic of Mark Webber at Le Mans. His car was vertical.

MillieVanilla · 29/11/2020 15:12

Jesus just saw the pictures
How on earth did that happen? Surely an investigation is needed here, I've seen so many cars hit the barrier but never tear in two and burst into flames?!?

addler · 29/11/2020 15:13

There's so many parts of it that are lucky. Lucky it was the back of the pack so the wheel didn't cause another accident. Lucky the marshals at the barrier weren't close enough to be hit. Lucky he wasn't unconscious or broke his legs. Lucky the crew got there so quickly. It could've been awful.

ginsparkles · 29/11/2020 15:15

So much all @addler just said.

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/11/2020 15:18

Dh reckons his suspension was broken because his hands were steering right but the wheels are straight.

There was a marshal standing back trackside with a fire extinguisher Angry. They should put the marshalls in fire proof suits too with helmets. They need more protection if their expected to put fires out like that.

Mustardbay · 29/11/2020 15:19

Horrendous, I felt sick watching it. How brave all the responders were.

They are talking on here about the batteries going up, who knows.
Nanasueathome · 29/11/2020 15:25

They are going to continue with the race. Start is 18.35 local time (they’re 3 hours ahead of UK)
