Bar soap

I've been making an effort to reduce plastic bottles but haven't yet made the switch to bars of soap instead of shower gel.

If you share a shower with the rest of the household manky teenage boys do you also share a bar of soap?

I use a different soap from dh (he likes the coal tar one). The kids still use shower gel

Plonque · 28/11/2020 18:42

We share bars of soap. We have an en suite so we rarely use the same shower but I do occasionally use the main bathroom and it never occurred to me to take my own bar of soap!!
It's soap, for goodness sake's!! ... Self cleaning in my eyes. Why wouldn't you?

FrolickingLemon · 28/11/2020 18:45

I actually make hand made soap. When I was trialling my new ideas, I tested them out on family. By default, they all had their favourite. So my Dad uses the one he likes and my Mum has her favourite. Before that, I believe they did share. As did me and DD.

yes, we have a bar next to each sink and in the shower.
we all use the same.

If I'm honest I'm a bit concerned about what might happen to the soap in a house with two teen boys. Grin We all share a bathroom and I can't quite picture a bath/shower with 4 separate soap dishes or understand how I'd know people used their own either.

But yes, it is soap so I guess it doesn't matter. I was just wondering what others do.

I think when I was a teen there was just one bar in the bathroom.

If your teen boys are like my DH they'll end up using the shampoo as a shower gel instead Hmm
At least he doesn't use my shampoo Xmas Grin

I use bar soap and my dc have a separate one they use for washing their face. They use shower gel in the shower. I would have to have separate but I am quite squeamish generally. If you think about it, you soap your hands up, wash various areas of your body and then go back for more soap...just feels a bit unhygenic to me!

MoonBaby1 · 28/11/2020 19:14

During lockdown 1 we used up lots of surplus soaps. We shared.

Bloody hell the scuzz marks and extra sink cleaning it created!!!

SimonJT · 28/11/2020 20:28

We use block soap.

In the shower we just have one bar that everyone uses. I don’t see the point of having one per person, you wouldn’t have one liquid handsoap or shower gel per person.

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/11/2020 20:31

Yes we just have one bar, though DH tends to wash his whole body with the shampoo bar despite my protestations. Admittedly a lot of lather does come out of them.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 28/11/2020 20:32

Everyone has their own bar of soap (according to preference - I love lemon, DS wants neutral etc.) in their own draining dishes.

There is a neutrally scented bar for hand washing at the sink.

Glenthebattleostrich · 28/11/2020 20:33

We like different soaps and have a soap sock each (hand knitted out of yarn scraps) to put our soap in.

PlanDeRaccordement · 28/11/2020 20:37

We all share the same bar of soap. The ones I buy are all natural and organic so they do not have strong perfumes. It’s not unhygienic because we always rinse the soap after we use it before placing in soap dish.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 28/11/2020 20:39

It's only me and DH in our house, so we do share a soap. I have a shower puff I use, and he lathers up his hands. Soap's self-cleaning I suppose!

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 28/11/2020 20:42

I had to give up on bar soap because the scum was something else! Until then we shared soap.

EmilySpinach · 28/11/2020 20:54

These threads make me wonder how everyone is using soap. You aren’t supposed to rub the bar directly on to your skin. You lather it in your hand or on to a cloth / puff and apply to your body from there.

underneaththeash · 28/11/2020 22:18

Nah - we tried DH is a bar soap person, but I find it really drying and the kids just don’t get clean. I can’t cope with the hairs etc.

Duckwit · 28/11/2020 22:21

We share soap. I just told DH to use it directly on his bum! Although even then I'm not sure it would matter as, being soap, it self cleaning anyway?

I buy those enormous Nesti Dante ones, rather than tiny Alan Partridge travel tavern ones Grin

Duckwit · 28/11/2020 22:23

Oh God, I mean I told DH NOT to use it directly on his bum!

Duckwit · 28/11/2020 22:24

If you think about it, you soap your hands up, wash various areas of your body and then go back for more soap...just feels a bit unhygenic to me!

But... Its soap? What's it for in the first place?

MushMonster · 28/11/2020 22:27

Same soap.
I know very few things that are as clean as a bar of soapGrin

shabbynotchic · 28/11/2020 22:39

We have separate soap bars because I witnessed DH rubbing the communal bar up his butt crack. And I like to use the soap to wash my face...

soundsystem · 28/11/2020 22:41

I get it. As a halfway measure, we used Splosh shower gel, which is refilable so less plastic. Might be worth a look?

BecomeStronger · 28/11/2020 22:45

I know in theory it's not rubbed directly on the body and I don't know that it would matter if it was, but hairs!

MissDoLots · 28/11/2020 23:01

We all use soap from the likes of lush etc so we have our own. I wouldn't want to share !
