Ikea dining chair broke while I was on it. WWYD?

Bought two years ago for about £35 I think. I just heard a creak and then it slid out from under me and I ended up on the floor! One of the legs has completely snapped off.

It's hard to get in touch with Ikea and I no longer have the receipt. What are my chances of a refund? I'd at least like them to take it away and recycle it as it seems hugely wasteful to put it in the bin! Or should I just do that?

I would just take it to the tip. Wouldn’t occur to me to contact Ikea about something I bought two years ago.

BlackCatShadow · 28/11/2020 13:42

I think after two years, you’re not going to get a refund.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/11/2020 13:44

You have had a cheap chair for two years. You have used it and now it has broken and you want a refund or them to collect it from you? That is ridiculous. Recycle it yourself and take it to the recycling centre.

I'd feel slightly embarrassed then take the chair to the tip.

My dining chairs from IKEA are beautiful quality. They're ten years old and still look like new.

KarmaNoMore · 28/11/2020 13:48

IKEA offers a one year change your mind policy (12 times more than most businesses) but after 2 years I do think is unreasonable to expect you can take it back.

May I ask which chair is it? I am thinking of replacing my 20 year old IKEA chairs but don’t want to get the wrong new model.

Dilemmmmma · 28/11/2020 13:50

You take it to the tip. After 2 years I wouldn't think of contacting the supplier. Particularly for something so cheap!

HopeAndDriftWood · 28/11/2020 13:53

A £35 chair that’s lasted two years would only legally entitled you to a partial refund, and you’d need to prove that the chair was inherently faulty and the break wasn’t due to wear and tear etc, I believe.

I’d just take it to the wood recycling part of the tip.

gamerchick · 28/11/2020 13:57

Just take it to the tip. Can you prove that it was faulty?

MarchionessofActon · 28/11/2020 13:57

Is this a joke?

Cheap chair gives up the ghost after two years of arses sitting on it. Chair gets disposed of, the end.

DianaT1969 · 28/11/2020 13:59

That's a cheap chair. Two years of use. It didn't fall apart in the first month. Recycle it yourself at the tip.

Plonque · 28/11/2020 14:02

Well I would say you get what you pay for but I have some IKEA kids furniture that has done us nearly 15 years.

Our nearest IKEA is so far away that £35 for something used everyday for two years means I'd just get rid and not be fussed. It'd cost me that in fuel and mandatory meatballs.

BecomeStronger · 28/11/2020 14:04

I'd be disappointed, I would expect even a cheap chair to last longer than 2 years (unless there's a dripfeed coming about the way it's been used) but I wouldn't do anything other than get rid of it.

a dining sort of chair i'd expect to last longer than 2 years? i'd email them anyway, see if its a general issue with that design. (and assuming I was not very overweight/used the chair within normal tolerances of expected use)

Bluntness100 · 28/11/2020 14:08

Cmon, it was 35 quid. It is just a cheap chair. Surpsied you got that Long out of it.

doodleygirl · 28/11/2020 14:09

Go on a diet? Grin

whynotwhen · 28/11/2020 14:11

This thread has unintentionally given me the giggles.

Take it to the tip, blimey!

wonkylegs · 28/11/2020 14:14

If your worried about the waste you could always have a go at fixing it.
Wooden things are generally quite fixable with some effort.

WankPuffins · 28/11/2020 14:19

Bloody hell.

I got the shits after eating a meat feast pizza from dominoes last week.

Should I demand a refund from them, or from the farmers who bred the meat?

AdventureCode · 28/11/2020 14:20

Was it £17.50 or £35 each? (not that it matters, but its not clear).
And i'm not sure i understand, you want them to collect it and then dispose of it for you after 2 years of use? Confused

user1745632169 · 28/11/2020 14:23

Why would you expect a refund or for them to dispose of your waste for you?!

AdventureCode · 28/11/2020 14:24

Oh sorry it was £35.

But thinking about it OP, they charge enough just to deliver something imagine the cost if they were to pick it up and then dispose of it!

papaelf · 28/11/2020 14:25

I usually bin things when they break. I thought everyone did 🤷🏻‍♀️
