Ikea dining chair broke while I was on it. WWYD?

Bought two years ago for about £35 I think. I just heard a creak and then it slid out from under me and I ended up on the floor! One of the legs has completely snapped off.

It's hard to get in touch with Ikea and I no longer have the receipt. What are my chances of a refund? I'd at least like them to take it away and recycle it as it seems hugely wasteful to put it in the bin! Or should I just do that?

Our tip (and pretty much all tips in the U.K. nowadays) has facilities for recycling wood, metal and plastic. If you take a screwdriver to it, you may be surprised how much of it you can recycle yourself.
It would not make good environmental sense for IKEA to send a vehicle to your house to collect it.

GreySkyClouds · 28/11/2020 14:37

What’s your height and weight?

mumwon · 28/11/2020 14:42

have the dc been playing on it (leaning back on 2 legs sot of thing throwing them around?) are they dry wood & been near radiators etc.
Does seem a bit short of time - is dh/p a big man? - hope your OK op!

This happened to me in the summer but I'm a fat git so I laughed and out the wood in the shed for the fire pit!

Misopasta · 28/11/2020 14:45

Recycle it or bin it. Ridiculous to get IKEA out in a van to do that for you for a two year old chair.

AfterSchoolWorry · 28/11/2020 14:45

It's wooden, it's biodegradable. Break it up and put it in the bin, move on with your life!

MrsGrindah · 28/11/2020 14:46

I clicked on this thread because I thought you were going to say this happened in the IKEA store , not one you’ve had for two years! I can only think you’ve gone a bit lockdown bonkers OP!

AfterSchoolWorry · 28/11/2020 14:46

@WankPuffins

Bloody hell.

I got the shits after eating a meat feast pizza from dominoes last week.

Should I demand a refund from them, or from the farmers who bred the meat?

😂😂

Oh my God so many of you are just awful. I'm going to stop coming here for advice! No DC, I'm a size 10 and 5ft9, don't know my exact weight, live in central London and don't drive.

WankPuffins · 28/11/2020 14:51

OP, in all seriousness if you can't take it to a tip, see if your council will do a special collection.

Harmarsuperstar · 28/11/2020 14:52

I hope you didn't hurt yourself, op. It must have been a bit of a shock.

People are awful for suggesting you put a broken chair in the bin?

What were you looking for OP?

orangenasturtium · 28/11/2020 14:57

@HopeAndDriftWood

A £35 chair that’s lasted two years would only legally entitled you to a partial refund, and you’d need to prove that the chair was inherently faulty and the break wasn’t due to wear and tear etc, I believe.

I’d just take it to the wood recycling part of the tip.

This.

But Ikea's brand values are supposed to be affordable quality and sustainability. A £35 wooden chair that only lasts 2 years fits neither of those criteria. I would be a bit miffed too.

If it is a fault, rather than misuse or incorrect assembly by you, I would email and complain. They are actually quite good at providing replacement parts although their customer service is terrible at the moment.

Littlemissnutcracker · 28/11/2020 14:58

It could be a faulty chair but they won't come and collect it. You could always email a complaints Dept but might be just easier to take along to a tip. I usually find IKEA stuff lasts and lasts.

flatteredfool · 28/11/2020 14:59

I'd get up off my ass, brush said ass to remove crumbs that are always on the floor and plonk my ass down in another chair then spend the next week checking my ass reflection in shop windows to see if it had exceeded its acceptable boundaries.

SionnachRua · 28/11/2020 15:00

You get what you pay for...and you paid for a cheap chair. Very cheeky to expect IKEA to collect it after 2 years!

grapewine · 28/11/2020 15:07

You really can't expect a refund for a chair that is two years old and from IKEA. Come on now. Advising you to recycle is hardly "awful".

babynumber2pending · 28/11/2020 15:14

OP this cracked me up. Sorry this happened to you, but just take it to the tip yourself and laugh it off!! 2 years for a chea chair is a good run

1forAll74 · 28/11/2020 15:17

I wouldn't throw it away, I would try and make something else out of it if its wooden. I never throw anything away that can maybe be repaired or altered in some way.

BarefootbyMoonlight · 28/11/2020 15:34

Surely a £35 chair should last more than two years though? I guess Ikea can be hit & miss at times, if I had the receipt/proof of purchase I’d definitely go back, probably not otherwise though just on time/hassle Vs likely gain (new chair/refund - but then hassle to get new one anyway)

Twobrews · 28/11/2020 15:36

...two years of arses...
GrinGrin

Although cheap IKEA chairs have had 13 years of arses.

Fuss · 28/11/2020 15:45

Sorry, my mind went straight here.

CountreeGurl · 28/11/2020 15:50

Ikea furniture isn't build to last, I'd just take it to the tip and replace it

Notanothernamechanged101 · 28/11/2020 15:51

My IKEA dining table and chairs are 17 years old Blush

What other advice did you want?

‘Oh how embarrassing and annoying. Put it in the bin’, that is the only advice I can think of. Ikea won’t do anything about it but you could contact them I guess.
