How do you get an article put in the paper?

If you wanted to give a news story how do you go about it? Do you just write to a paper asking if they would like to run an article?

Yes, that's what I've done in the past. Although tbf I've often written the article for them and included photos. That seems to help.

I do it a lot for work for the local paper. Just send in a press release and a photo - they usually print it!

These days there are very few actual journalists writing for the local paper, so if you send a well-written press release and a decent quality photo they will probably include verbatim.

Also many local journalists will be on FB/Twitter drumming up interest for stories they've written, so you can contact them directly.
