A question about spice grinders.

Good morning.
I wanted to buy DP a spice grinder for Christmas he has been talking about getting one for ages.
I had a look online and bought him a coffee grinder / spice grinder combo.
The more I think about it the more I think he will actually prefer to use it as a coffee grinder.
I have had another look and found the little hand held twisty grinders, has anyone actually used them and are they any good ?

I wouldn't want to use 1 grinder to do both. The oils from both the coffee and spices will mix with one another and would give a weird tasting flavour.

Yes. DH bought himself a hand operated one, and uses it all the time. I grind my own spices in a Magic Bullet and would not want to use it for coffee as well.

I wouldn't mix the two. Coffee and any toasted spices are so oily, they would inevitably leech into each other.

A manual coffee grinder would also be fine (as the beans are uniform in size and the grinder will pick them up) but I have a manual spice grinder and an electric one, and the manual one doesn't work nearly as well. It has problems crushing anything that isn't peppercorn/ coriander seed size, i.e. it misses cinnamon sticks, dried chillies etc.
Go for an electric spice grinder.

I have two electric coffee grinders - one for spices and one for coffee. They weren’t dear and I’ve had them for years.

I definitely wasn’t planning on mixing them, was just wondering if the hand operated ones were any good as I thought we could use coffee / spice grinder just for coffee.
I think I will buy another electric one so we have one for coffee and one for spices.
I am going to invest in some nice coffee beans and have Lovely fresh coffee for breakfast Christmas Day.
