Do you get milk delivered?

Now DC is one and can drink full fat milk instead of forumla I thought I'd look at milk delivery but the prices are a lot more than the local supermarkets and a bit more than the local convenience shops. The milk also comes in glass bottles or plastic. I assumed they only did glass. The amount of milk we get through I still think the cost might be worth it (and still cheaper than formula!) but just wondered if people do think it is worth it or I should be more organised in buying milk (I work long shifts).

I have 4 pints delivered and top up with milk from supermarket when i do weekly shop. There are 4 of us.

SleeplessinEastSussex · 27/11/2020 05:42

We have milk delivered for the family and works really well. More expensive than from a supermarket but works for us

Onedropbeat · 27/11/2020 05:44

We do , but that’s because I only do one shop a week and want fresh milk delivered multiple times a week so o get a few bottles delivered 3 times

It’s more expensive but it works out at less than £4 a week and there’s less waste

We get through a lot of milk in this house and have 2 pints delivered every other day. It can be a saviour in the morning if we have forgotten to stock up.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 27/11/2020 05:51

I'd like to, to support local business but unfortunately it would get stolen where I live.

ZeroForNow · 27/11/2020 06:10

@Waxonwaxoff0 that's such a shame. Aren't people horrible.

I going plan an order. I think we have delivery x3 a week. DC should have 1 pint a day I believe and OH and I probably go through a pint together. I like the idea of fresh milk on the door (I used to have milk delivered as a child) and tbh not being a slave to the supermarket every two days particularly when you struggle to get 1/2pt bottles and end up with a huge 4/6 which DC won't use up before it starts turning.

We used to them swapped to organic milk which is crazy expensive from Milk&More (around £3.85 for 4 pints I think) so when we moved I stopped.

Started again in March so we could have fresh milk abs bread throughout the week and still only do a weekend shop. I just don't buy the organic from them.

Also they sell a 1.3kg box of broken biscuits which are so good and always a bit fun to see what you get.

Twobrews · 27/11/2020 06:42

I tried but unfortunately they only come here twice a week and I don't have the storage for that many milk bottles.

@Waxonwaxoff0 my sister has hers delivered into a lockable metal box after getting sick of it being nicked.

Bessica1970 · 27/11/2020 06:49

We do, to avoid using plastic. More expensive, but it was a godsend during the first lockdown when we were shielding.

ZeroForNow · 27/11/2020 07:08

@Twobrews that's frustrating. Ours is x3 but we're lucky to have two fridges after moving home.

@ColdCottage think the biscuits has sold it to me Grin

I’ve done it for 2+ years now.

Cons - expensive

Pros - had regular milk. Bread, cream, juice during first lockdown when delivery slots were scarce, have deliveries 3/week which during lockdowns & once/week supermarket deliveries keeps milk fresh, and dh/dd1 get through a LOT of milk and this takes the mental load of having to remember/check/update away. So worth it for me.

My mum has Milk & More (not available near us) and can get many more things with it which suits them in a rural location.

Impatientwino · 27/11/2020 07:14

We use milk&more weekly and then get a top up from the supermarket. We buy their fruit juice as well and am now going to search for the biscuits!

kimlo · 27/11/2020 07:14

4 pints 3 times a week, then I pay £25 by standing order.

He's a local independent milk man and he's never once let me down.

Ted27 · 27/11/2020 07:16

yes I do, its a bit more expensive but we go through a lot of milk for 2 people so its reduced our plastic quite a lot. I rarely have to buy more from the shop.
If you were isolating or ill, you could keep going on the other items they will deliver - bread, cheese, yoghurt, fruit juice, potatoes

Thecatisboss · 27/11/2020 07:19

Get our milk delivered from a local farm which is lovely fresh milk and tastes great and supports a local business.

It is more expensive but saves me going to the supermarket which always adds up to more as I pick up extra bits too!

Chottie · 27/11/2020 07:19

Another vote for Milk&More :)

The milkman always delivers no matter what the weather. OH likes the beer, so that is delivered once a week too along with the milk. :)

Landlubber2019 · 27/11/2020 07:19

We use mcqueens dairies, a bit more expensive but we'll worth it!

dancingthroughthedark · 27/11/2020 07:21

I have used Milk and More for several years. It is more expensive but we don't use a great deal of milk maybe 3 pints a week. I also get my bread from them . The broken biscuit box is brilliant we haven't yet had a disappointing box and most of them are barely broken . Any duds at the bottom I crush up for cheesecake bases. Some of their artisan bits are expensive but for kitchen stiff like foil, bin bags etc they are cheaper than our local shop. Also managed to get loo rolls from them when no where else seemed to have any!

Indoctro · 27/11/2020 07:21

I get a delivery twice a week

Tuesday and Friday

2lt of semi
500ml of skim
6 eggs

It's extremely handy and I paid about 70p per delivery more than I would in the shop so totally worth it

howdidigettobe50something · 27/11/2020 07:22

Yes we too use a local independent milkman. He only delivers twice a week and we average a pint a day and that works out well for us. What with buying a soda stream too... we've managed to significantly reduce our plastic waste.

BecomeStronger · 27/11/2020 07:25

I've really made an effort to do something about single use plastic this year but I'm afraid milk is still in 4 pint plastic cartons from the supermarket. I knew glass bottles would be more expensive and was happy to pay a "bit" extra but the only milk delivery company here charges 4x as much for a pint as the supermarket does. A line had to be drawn Sad we use 12 pints a week.

AmIAWeed · 27/11/2020 07:28

Love our milk and more delivery. 8 mile round trip for a shop here so it's a life saviour. Bread twice a week, milk, orange and apple juice three times a week.
Then whatever I've forgotten - tea, biscuits, bacon, eggs. Even get the washing up liquid as that's in glass bottles. Last year we had the hot chocolate on sticks, great treat on a Saturday morning :)
Plus, we don't waste fuel getting items and glass bottles so waste cut down

Mapletreelane · 27/11/2020 07:31

I've used Milk and More for 15 years . 10 pints a week, always fresh, never have to worry about running out if milk. Can top up with other items if we need. We even managed to get some loo roll from them in April! Yes it is more expensive than the supermarket, but the convenience is worth it.

paganbilly · 27/11/2020 07:34

Yes, 2 pints. 3 times a week but I'm dropping it to 1 pint 3 times a week. It's 90p a bottle.

Iliketeaagain · 27/11/2020 07:37

It is a bit than the supermarket, but I've I probably spend a bit on groceries now because I don't need to keep nipping to the shop to get milk all through the week. But that might be more about my self control - go in for milk, come out with more than that because I happen to see it!
