Do you get milk delivered?

Now DC is one and can drink full fat milk instead of forumla I thought I'd look at milk delivery but the prices are a lot more than the local supermarkets and a bit more than the local convenience shops. The milk also comes in glass bottles or plastic. I assumed they only did glass. The amount of milk we get through I still think the cost might be worth it (and still cheaper than formula!) but just wondered if people do think it is worth it or I should be more organised in buying milk (I work long shifts).

We've had a milk round for about a year now and it really came in handy when we were shielding. We use Creamline and get milk, bread, eggs and butter delivered. Tend to get about 7 pints of milk a week at £5.50. You can sometimes get big stuff like compost delivered too which is good if you don't have a car. Means way less trips to the shops

toycat · 27/11/2020 07:41

Forgot to mention it's really flexible, dead easy to change what you want to order the night before.

StCharlotte · 27/11/2020 07:42

Yes we have had Milk & More for a couple of years and they were brilliant during the first lockdown. Need to up the weekend milk now we're stuck at home most of the weekend over the winter.

They are much more expensive, no doubt, but worth it.

I'm really pleased for our milkman that they will have got so much more business this year.

Thing is that milkandmore is at least twice the price of the supermarket and the milk doesn’t keep for nearly as long.

I was getting three pints three times a week which cost me around £8.50, eight pints of cravendale from the supermarket is around £3, and it keeps for at least a week.

Similarly fruit juice - Sainsburys own apple juice is £1.20 a litre. Milkandmore juice is £1.35 a pint.

I like the idea but it involves having to cut back on other things to afford it. It’s good as an emergency thing though.

HipHopBanzai · 27/11/2020 07:50

Our milkman is great. We get through a lot of milk and swapped to try & cut down on plastic. It is undeniably more expensive but I love the convenience and the milk tastes better from glass.

All ordering and paying is done on line and you can order a massive range of products, including from independent stores. It was a absolutely lifeline during the first lockdown!

PontiacBandit · 27/11/2020 07:52

I love our milkman. Ours are 78p a pint so quite pricey but saves us money in the long run as a trip to the local shop for top up milk it's usually £10+.

OrangeIsTheNewTwat · 27/11/2020 07:56

We get 2 pints 3 times a week. I'm disabled & DH has mobility issues too. We don't have a car & are more than a mile from the supermarket. We have 1 DD who drinks quite a bit of milk so it's worth it, for us.

WhoUsedMyName · 27/11/2020 07:58

We are a family of 6
Mon- 2 blue,2 green, 2 orange juice
Weds- 2blue ,2 green
Friday- 2 blue , 2green, 2 orange juice.
Works out about £38 a month I think 🤔 so it is quite pricey but we love it.

Someonesayroadtrip · 27/11/2020 08:04

We do, family of 6, we got 8 semi a week, 3 skimmed, and 3 bread. It came go £49.20 for 3 weeks. I recently cancelled my skimmed as I it kept turning sour and the price is just going up and up and it's way above what I was willing to pay. So just have the 8 semi a week and 3 bread now.

@Landlubber2019

We use mcqueens dairies, a bit more expensive but we'll worth it!
I found McQueens really unreliable, with frequent missed deliveries. It’s really crap thinking there will be milk in time for breakfast, and then there isn’t.

The final straw was when the delivery person had evidently hurled the (plastic) milk container from a distance onto our doorstep. The carton had spilt and the milk was everywhere. I cancelled after that, and haven’t missed it.

PanamaPattie · 27/11/2020 08:07

We get our milk delivered - really appreciated it in both lockdowns. We WFH and use a lot. It comes 3 times a week in glass bottles. Our milkman hasn’t let us down in over 20 years.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 27/11/2020 08:08

Milk and more was great during the first lockdown, but as soon as the weather started getting warm the whole milk was going off way too quickly and we were wasting lots.

PinkPlantCase · 27/11/2020 08:12

We’ve used milk and more for about a year to cut down on plastic. Have about 8 pints a week.

We found that we saved money through not going to the supermarket as often (because we never run out of milk).

We did struggle with the timings of the milkman at our last house. It would come at around midday and that was pants when I was at work. We’ve moved house now and currently milkman is much more reliable and delivers before 7am

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/11/2020 08:14

I used to but he didn't always deliver before I left for work and in the summer it could sit on the doorstep all day so I gave it up and bought it from the supermarket.

I freeze it too, so I've never run out (will probably regret saying that!)

ZeroForNow · 27/11/2020 08:15

Our local is milk and more. Is there a way to find out what time delivery is likely to take place? I go to work at 5 am and partner at 7.30 am so later isn't ideal for obvious reasons.

Yes in glass bottles, the reason why I switched. It costs a little more than the shop but It's much better for the environment and I feel it's better for the children too as it's from a local farm.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 27/11/2020 08:20

We did for a bit, but it didn't work so well for us. The milk was in plastic so no environmental gain. A few times they were pretty late, and a few times it got nicked - the bottle half-drunk and placed back on my doorstep was a highlight.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 27/11/2020 08:24

I leave for work at 6am and my milk&more delivery is there before I leave. It is a bit more expensive than going to the supermarket but it stops me buying unnecessary crap in the shop so it balances out, and was invaluable during the first lockdown and when we had to self isolate for two weeks when DH had Covid.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/11/2020 08:34

@OrangeGinLemonFanta

...stops me buying unnecessary crap in the shop

that's the highlight for me!

We use McQueens, they've never been late or missed a delivery, not even in horrible weather.

Saying that, my mum used Milk and More for a while but cancelled because whoever was doing her deliveries was incredibly unreliable.

I'd guess any big company will have staff who aren't as diligent as they should be.

nosswith · 27/11/2020 08:38

Milk and More have been a lifeline for my mum.

TheWindOnTheMoon · 27/11/2020 08:57

We used to have milk delivered from a local organic dairy when the DC were small but they stopped doing deliveries & we just get ours with the shopping now and top ups from the milk station on a nearby farm, which is self service & open 24 hours.

They can tell you if you ask, ours comes at 5am in his truck light up with led lights and wakes up ds Hmm
ZeroForNow · 27/11/2020 09:00

@TheWindOnTheMoon that's incredible. I doubt we have anything like that locally.

yeah I do, I get 2 pints of the cream topped whole milk and a carton of oat milk 3x a week, and then top up with extra from the supermarket. when necessary
