Do you get milk delivered?

Now DC is one and can drink full fat milk instead of forumla I thought I'd look at milk delivery but the prices are a lot more than the local supermarkets and a bit more than the local convenience shops. The milk also comes in glass bottles or plastic. I assumed they only did glass. The amount of milk we get through I still think the cost might be worth it (and still cheaper than formula!) but just wondered if people do think it is worth it or I should be more organised in buying milk (I work long shifts).

We use modern milkman - love it. Get 3 pints 3x well and 2 loaves of bread. Occasionally I’ll add juice or pastries as a treat. As pp said I reckon we actually save money as we no longer pop to the shops for milk and bread and come out with £20s worth of extras

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 27/11/2020 09:28

I have been having milk delivered for 25 years and the milkmen have always been reliable. We get three deliveries a week now.

AlCalavicci · 27/11/2020 09:43

I get mine delvered too , I am more than happy to pay a bit more for the convenance like @toycat I use creamline, they are great , they have never missed a day yet , and the flexabilty to change the order right up until mid-night for the next days delivery has made sure I have had bread and spuds a few times now when tescos have let me down.
I got their Christmas list a few days ago ;
1kg side of salmon -£26.50
Atlantic prawns 300g £7.99
Cheshire pork loin 2kg £22
Whole chicken 1.8 kg £8.80
Lots of other things on there too , yes it is more than some of the supermarkets , but it is getting delivered , is much less likely to of been handled by lots of diffrent people and is fresher. My full fat milk always last a week .

Oh and mine always comes at around 4.30 am so even when I am on a early shift its there before I leave home.

Ultimatecougar · 27/11/2020 10:20

Yes I use a local milkman. It is a bit more expensive but really worth it for the convenience. I can just text him the day before if I want to add to or cancel my order. I pay online.

Thewaythingsare · 27/11/2020 10:29

Yes I do started getting it delivered the start of last lockdown to support small business.

BikeRunSki · 27/11/2020 10:32

I’ve had milk delivered for 20 years. We live in dairy farming countryside and there are a lot of milk delivery services around! Our dairy is 3 miles away and uses only glass bottles for home delivery. Yes it’s more expensive than the supermarket, but I’d rather pay direct to the farm or milkman. My milkman has only ever had to miss a delivery when he was isolating recently. When it snows, the farmer delivers milk to the milkies by tractor, and mine then delivers by sledge.

And it’s all glass bottles. We sometimes put a little mark on the bottle to see how long it takes to come round again. About a month.

CMOTDibbler · 27/11/2020 10:34

Yes, we use Milk and More, and it comes super early - 4am if not earlier.

Scrowy · 27/11/2020 10:34

I do get a little annoyed when people describe milk from the milkman as being 'expensive'. It's still very cheap for what it actually is and the amount of labour that goes into producing it.

Supermarkets make little to no profit (and often a loss) on the milk they sell because they know that people will pop in for a couple of pints of milk from there because it's 50p cheaper than the milkman but spend another £20 on other stuff they wouldn't have otherwise bought while they are there.

So when you factor that in as well your supermarket milk is probably much more expensive....

PaperMonster · 27/11/2020 11:33

We have milk delivered and it is a bit more expensive than the supermarket but we like to support our local farmers.

Tarantallegra · 27/11/2020 11:35

I use milk & more which is a bit more expensive than supermarkets but I find everything has a much longer shelf life so it's worth it. even sliced bread lasts around 2 weeks which is amazing!!!

StarlightLady · 27/11/2020 11:44

I tried, but gave up, it didn’t suit my lifestyle. Pre Covid l travelled a lot for work (nights away), although l always stopped it, they would keep forgetting and I’d come back to milk on the doorstep; security risk.

On summer days it would sit there in the sun until l got home from work.

BahHumbygge · 27/11/2020 11:46

We get raw jersey milk delivered once a week from a local farm and it lasts well in the fridge till the next week. It's a million times tastier than even the organic unhomogenised milk from the co-op. And it comes in glass bottles, so cuts down drastically on plastic. Also get eggs and farm-made yoghurt from them.

I doubt it. We get milk delivered with our Tesco order (DH drinks a lot of milk) and if we run out he gets some from a sOar type shop and doesn’t buy anything else when he’s there.
Vintagevixen · 27/11/2020 12:23

Yes I use milk and more.

I know it's a bit more expensive but to me it's worth it as it has drastically reduced our plastic use and I'm hoping it means dairy farmers get a fairer price for their produce.

I also don't have a car so it saves me dragging heavy milk cartons back. Plus it delivers loads of other stuff - I get compostable coffee capsules for my coffee machine there.

halcyondays · 27/11/2020 12:24

Spar type shop

Titsywoo · 27/11/2020 12:34

We get ours delivered in glass bottles which are washed out and then left out to be taken and re-used. It is 81p a pint so not ridiculous. We buy 4 a week.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 27/11/2020 13:04

I’d like to support my local milkman to help keep doorstep deliveries going forward people who struggle to get to the shop BUT despite living in a very busy, populated area, our milkman only delivers twice a week and he is on my road around lunchtime so milk would sit in doorstep in full sun for several hours. I get through several pints a day so would need him to deliver 8-10 pints with each delivery and I don’t have that much space in the fridge! If he delivered daily before breakfast I’d totally have it delivered. But I’ll stick to having two/three 4 pint cartons from Ocado once a week and then picking up another two every other day from the local shop.

That is a lot more expensive to be fair.... that’s £6.48 for 8 pints..... I pay £2.30 for 8 pints from local co op.
Titsywoo · 27/11/2020 13:42

I suppose it depends on how much you get through - 4 pints a week is enough for us and for the convenience and no plastic use £3.24 vs £1.15 is not a big deal to me.

PigletJohn · 27/11/2020 14:36

I have mine delivered from a local dairy farm.

They pasteurised and bottle it but it is only whole milk. They deliver bought-in skimmed and semi.

Very handy, especially if you should be ill and unable to get to shops.

Delivered very early before morning milking.

That’s fair enough. A few pounds a week would be fine. I get through nearly 4 pints a day so quite a big difference to my family spend..

PigletJohn · 27/11/2020 15:37

My neighbours don't have theirs delivered and drive to the supermarket at 7.30 every morning.

Luckily petrol and time are free.

LemmysAceCard · 27/11/2020 15:44

I never have but 3/4 months ago the local milk man came round knocking on doors asking for people to sign up for delivery as they were trying to save peoples jobs and keep the farm going so i signed up.

It is more expensive than the supermarket but i like the fact i am helping a small business to survive.
