What are your suggestions? Can be illustrations, or story lines, or messages.

Current favourite is Maybe by Kobi Yamada. Read here:

That's beautiful. My favourite has to be Shirley Hughes. Lots of lovely memories of reading her books and discovering the pictures with my dc when they were little.

Oh, I am adding these to the wish list.

Is the gender swapped one a change in pronouns or do the entire characters change roles?

I love Emma Chichester Clark’s illustrations. Her Blue Kangaroo books are really charming and the illustrations in the Christmas one are especially gorgeous. She’s also illustrated 2 lovely hardback books of fairytales (Grimm’s and Hans Christian Andersen) and a version of Alice in Wonderland.

TheSockMonster · 26/11/2020 20:23

I also love Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson (“and a kind granny” )

FixItUpChappie · 26/11/2020 20:24

This book has such a beautiful message - I tear up at the end every time,

TheSockMonster · 26/11/2020 20:33

Matthew Reinhart’s books are works of art. Pop up books for grown ups and very careful children

FolkSongSweet · 26/11/2020 20:35

The Lost Words is beautiful

Rathmobhaile · 26/11/2020 20:40

The gender swapped one has gender changed roles. So Rapunzel lets down his beard to be rescued by the princess. Its aimed at portraying boys in more sensitive roles being helped by girls and girls being seen more proactive and in the role of rescuer. So the characters stay but change gender - names and pronouns.

The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse

The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse
I've heard good things about this - the whole story is told in pictures but no words?
VenusClapTrap · 26/11/2020 20:59

Dd has this edition of The Secret Garden. It’s large and hardback (but full version not abridged) with quite the most beautiful illustrations. When I saw it in an independent book shop last year I had to buy it for her, and she loves it and rereads it all the time.

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse does have words with each picture. It's a lovely book for children or adults.

Gnomes by Rien Poortvliet and Will Huygen

Anything by Rien Poortvliet tbh.

bookworm14 · 26/11/2020 21:36

@VenusClapTrap that's going on the list for my daughter. I have a beautiful illustrated edition of Watership Down that was my mum's- just looked online and it's quite valuable depending on the edition/condition! They've got it at Oxfam for a more reasonable £40 which seems like a good deal now! It is beautiful and I love it and would never sell mine though.

Ludo and the Star Horse by Mary Stewart, and The Brothers Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren. Both are lovely, but do have sad bits. I read them to my littles when they were about 8-10 iirc.

The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse
Bear in mind this is utter shit for dyslexic/dyspraxic kids.
SarahAndQuack · 26/11/2020 23:28

Three authors/illustrators I love:

  • Mrs Noah's Pockets and Mrs Noah's Garden - gorgeous illustrations, and also beautifully told stories.
  • Jan Pienkowski's illustrations for Joan Aiken. The Necklace of Raindrops is probably my favourite.
  • The Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hall. Very old now, but beautifully poetic (he's a poet), and lovely illustrations.
AngeloMysterioso · 27/11/2020 00:03

Minalima make really beautiful, keepsake versions of classic children’s books.

Robert Sabuda for gorgeous popups.

yknaps · 27/11/2020 05:59

Britta Teckentrup's illustrations are lovely, eg Moon (written by Patricia Hegarty) or Under the Same Sky.

Brody77 · 27/11/2020 07:27

I love the julia rawlinson ferdy /fletcher books the illustrations are breathtaking
