What are your suggestions? Can be illustrations, or story lines, or messages.

Current favourite is Maybe by Kobi Yamada. Read here:

I love the Shirley Hughes books. This illustration in particular from Lucy and Tom at Christmas always gives me a lump in my throat. Tom gets a bit cross and overwhelmed on Christmas day so his grandad takes him out for a little walk in the snow.

Ooh mine have already been said, Peepo and Ten Little Fingers. But following for all the books when mine are a bit older

I quite like the Katie Morag picture books too.

I loved Owl Babies, Mole and the Baby Bird, any Shirley Hughes book.

Kim Lewis Books have the most beautiful illustrations. You could put them on your wall and people would admire them.

We had First Snow, Floss and the Last Train which is slightly eerie, but in a nice way.

@SarahAndQuack

Three authors/illustrators I love:
  • Mrs Noah's Pockets and Mrs Noah's Garden - gorgeous illustrations, and also beautifully told stories.
  • Jan Pienkowski's illustrations for Joan Aiken. The Necklace of Raindrops is probably my favourite.
  • The Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hall. Very old now, but beautifully poetic (he's a poet), and lovely illustrations.
You beat me to it with Jan Pienkowski! His illustrations are magical.

It’s funny the books you remember from childhood, I can vividly remember the stunning vibrant illustrations of a book I had as a child, ( The Pumpkin Palace) I tracked it down as an adult ( eye watering price!!) turned out the illustrations were all in a pale beige soft orange water colour. The vivid colours came from me and my imagination.

The illustrated versions of Harry Potter are gorgeous (up to the Goblet of Fire now) I've got my original paper/ hardbacks, but the illustrated ones are lovely for reading to the DCs and the layout easier for their visual stress than plsin pages of prose.

And just googled it and found a copy for £2.50. Grrrr. I went to a specialist children’s bookshop and paid about £30!

Clawdy · 25/07/2021 19:57

I know they're old-fashioned, but Cicely Barker's Flower Fairy books have the most beautiful illustrations.

MadMadMadamMim · 25/07/2021 19:57

Alfie books by Shirley Hughes.

They are just gorgeous. Also Hairy McLairy books because the rhyme schemes are just lovely to read out loud.

35andThriving · 25/07/2021 20:09

I keep thinking of more. I like the Humphrey's Corner books, by Sally Hunter, for very young children. Lee Butler books Who Says Woof? and Whose Nose and Toes, are also lovely.

Odile13 · 25/07/2021 20:15

Swan: The Life and Dance of Anna Pavlova by Laurel Snyder.

The illustrations are beautiful.

reprehensibleme · 25/07/2021 23:15

MadamMim, big fan of Hairy Maclary (always followed by a chant of 'from Donaldson's Dairy....) - the household cat is referred to as Slinky Malinki even though it isn't their name. They are great books to read out loud, bit like Dr Seuss. We buy them (and Katie Morag) as presents for new babies.

bluechameleon · 25/07/2021 23:22

The earth beneath your feet and The sky above your eyes are really lovely, the pages fold out to make a really long picture with lots of interesting details.

Paquerette · 25/07/2021 23:26

Miss Spider’s Tea Party by David Kirk. Beautiful illustrations and a lovely story too.

reprehensibleme · 25/07/2021 23:28

Been thinking about books I loved as a child and they were so varied - really young I remember Orlando the Marmalade Cat and Teddy Robinson.

primary school age, Swallows and Amazons, Enid Blyton, Laura Ingalls Wilder (there was a lovely thread on here a few months ago about the Little House books) The Bobbsey Twins, Joan Aiken, a book called Castors Away about the Napoleonic Wars and a book I can never remember the name of but the two heroines were called Cordy (Cordelia) and Crys (Crystal). Also Rumer Godden and Follyfoot - Monica Dickens. I was never into Chalet School or the horse books (except Follyfoot)

Lovely memories of climbing out of the landing window onto the garage roof with a book, a bottle of squash and a couple of apples......

Sophie’s Masterpiece: A Spider’s Tale by Eileen Spinelli has gorgeous illustrations and is a beautiful story.

35andThriving · 26/07/2021 04:20

This thread has given me so many great ideas. I've reserved a few at the library, and have quite a list to try in the future too. Thanks everyone Smile Flowers

and the Mountain is a very sweet book about respecting people, overcoming your fears, perseverance and the generation gap. It has lovely illustrations too.

BikeRunSki · 26/07/2021 07:47

Link should say “Owen and the Mountain”.
