Bought used car - no paperwork

Hi, need some advice please. I bought a used car from a private seller, he didn't give me any paperwork, said he would drop it off today, nothing! I went this morning to post office and taxed it and have applied for the v5c, they said it will be sent out in a few weeks. Is there anything else I need? Has anyone ever bought a car before with no paperwork? Can't believe I was so silly to take it without the paperwork! Also I have insured it in my name too. Thanks

Did you get all the keys & a receipt for the sale?

vanillandhoney · 26/11/2020 17:22

I would be prepared for him not to be the real owner.

Have you run an HPI check on it ?

A few questions:- Did you see the V5? And did it have the same address on as the one you viewed the car at? Did you see his/her photo ID showing the same name as on the V5? Hopefully you did an HPI check at the very least, to ensure it isn't on finance and hasn't been in a serious accident. Did you see any paperwork relating to services or MOTs which would have helped to verify the mileage is correct and the car has been maintained properly.

If not it appears you have been very naive purchasing a car privately. It really is something you should research very carefully.

Hopefully the seller just hasn't had chance to drop it off yet. Good luck!

Please don't tell me you paid cash. Did you actually meet at his home or was it in a car park or similar?

Also a very good point from a pp, did you get both keys for the car? And did you give the seller your name and address?

waffodil · 26/11/2020 17:31

What paperwork do you expect other than the V5?

StormsDontLastForever · 26/11/2020 17:35

Thanks everyone. It was a mechanic I bought it from, was recommended by a friend of a friend. Done hpi check, mot is valid etc. Only got 1 key though? I am stressed out my head about this lol. Not expecting anymore paperwork was just wondering if there's anything I should have got that they didn't give me apart from the v5. Thanks

The only extra paperwork would be service history, but not all cars come with service history or spare keys. As long as you have the V5 there doesn't appear to be anything untoward.

The seller has to send the v5 off to the dvla so I believe they shouldn’t hand it over to the buyer. It’s an offence for a seller not to do this. Some unscientific buyers don’t register it and then rack up speeding tickets, use the car for illegal purposes, etc so the onus is on the seller.

Hopefully it’s fine. I bought my vw camper off gumtree and got a handwritten scrap of paper receipt and that was it until the new v5 turned up.

JacobReesMogadishu · 26/11/2020 17:44

Or you get half of the v5 but not the other, there’s certainly something a seller has to send off.

StormsDontLastForever · 26/11/2020 17:50

Ok great thank you. I applied for the new v5 today anyway and I have taxed the vehicle and it is also insured. So fingers crossed all is ok.

Oh I put unscrupulous....no idea why my iPad changed it to unscientific!

I quite liked the idea of unscientific buyers!

papaelf · 26/11/2020 17:59

Why did you apply for a new VC5?

JacobReesMogadishu · 26/11/2020 18:02

I bought a new 2nd hand car recently and had nothing but problems with it....dh would say I’m an unscientific buyer. “Didn’t you check this, didn’t you check that”. 😂🤷‍♀️🙈
