iPad question

I own a first generation iPad and would like a new one for Christmas.

However, I've seen that some cost nearly £1000 which we don't want to spend.

There's one on Amazon for £329. Would, that be ok for general internet browsing. My current one doesn't support all,the websites I want to visit and today it wouldn't let me onto the BBC website.....

Yes, it will be absolutely fine. Mine is one of the less expensive ones and it's still going strong and gets all the latest updates, it was around the same price as yours in 2017.

Thanks user

I think the newest iPad is around £389 on the Apple store - might be worth looking?

girlcrushonvillanelle · 25/11/2020 22:52

It just has less storage, but unless you want to store lots of videos and movies it will be fine.

I'm buying one for DD (9).

You could look at any iPad from 5th gen upwards and they would be good for your needs. Have you checked out eBay? There as some very good genuine sellers on there (and some not so genuine) and you can get some excellent condition iPads for decent money. If you want new, I would recommend the new 8th gen which will set you back £389 but will last you years. It all depends on what you use it for really.

Don’t just go off cost. What specific iPad is “the one on Amazon for £329”?

Amazon isn’t always going to be the cheapest or best deal.

Changi · 25/11/2020 23:26

My husband just replaced an older iPad Air with a new 2020 model iPad. It is a lot quicker despite not being the Air version.

The one on Amazon is a good price. It's being sold by Apple itself.

SillyOldMummy · 26/11/2020 07:45

We got a refurbished one second hand, it is fab and works perfectly. Saved quite a lot that way.

AlwaysCheddar · 26/11/2020 07:52

Don’t get one that’s too old as it won’t be supported by the latest updates.

AlwaysCheddar · 26/11/2020 07:54

A new 32gb iPad on Apple is only £329!!

Hercules12 · 26/11/2020 07:57

hi. Jumping on the thread as faced with same dilemma. I don't store music or films but do have all my photos stored - is it worth paying more to get the 128 memory instead of the 32?

makingmiracles · 26/11/2020 07:58

Wait until tomorrow-black Friday itself.
I bought a mini 5 a few months agar for £349 on amazon, 64Gb Just check whatever you are buying is iOS 12 or above and able to support updates for ios above 12.

I would say stay away from places like eBay etc, if your spending that much at least get from a reputable business that will help if it goes wrong.

sandycloud · 26/11/2020 08:08

I need an iPad for work and bought a refurbished one from music magpie. I've bought phones from them too and have all been great. Look new.

That depends on how much space your photos take up and if you need access to them offline. If you have them stored on the cloud anyway, you might as well just go for the 32. Just keeping them on one device is risky too.

The problem is that £100 extra that Apple charge is disproportionate to the amount of extra memory 128Gb gives you. It's the same if you want the 4G version. My husband ended up paying well over £500.

DominaShantotto · 26/11/2020 08:25

Get the memory if you can afford it - if not - don't sweat it. The 1k iPad will be the 12.9 Pro - which I do have, but it is not what you're wanting if you're just wanting the odd spot of Netflix and Candy Crush and the like.

(I have the big Pro because I use it essentially as a laptop replacement a fair bit of the time, and as a second monitor and all sorts of other stuff - but my kids have the base model iPads and they do the job just fine)

DominaShantotto · 26/11/2020 08:26

Also if you have anyone in the family with unidays student discount and you can wait for Apple store's dispatch times - their education discount is usually fairly generous.

BaconAndAvocado · 26/11/2020 08:58

Thanks all.

I won't be watching videos or movies on it. Just browsing, shopping.

Sounds like the £329 one is a good bet.

Will definitely wait until tomorrow.

Just checked. It's the new Apple iPad, 8th generation, 32GB.

I doubt it will come down in price for Black Friday but it may well go out of stock (tried ordering from Apple direct last week and shipping dates were already three to four weeks away) so depends if you want it in time for Christmas or happy to wait

Changi · 26/11/2020 09:40

Not in this case. It will save you £5.

If you collect from the store you might get it the same day.

We got ours from Computer Exchange, worth a look and more environmentally friendly.
