tobee · 25/11/2020 16:44

Surprised he lasted that long tbh.

Still, RIP.

Yes I thought that too, maybe you should get Mumsnet to edit title to say Diego Maradona.

Seems no one's that bothered here.

RIP. He was such a skilful player.

Nowayhozay · 25/11/2020 18:34

Isn't he the one that cheated way back ? I think he was also in trouble for using steroids!

PaperTowels · 25/11/2020 18:36

He was an obese drug addict, it just doesn't seem much of a surprise.
ramblingsonthego · 25/11/2020 18:36

He was allegedly a massive coke head. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did. And he was a massive cheat. A skilled player but still a cheat. Not a decent sportsman.

nosswith · 25/11/2020 19:17

RIP. Sad to say given his health problems in recent years it was not a great shock.

The documentary by Asif Kapadia is worth watching (he also did the one about Ayrton Senna and an excellent one about Amy Winehouse).

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 25/11/2020 19:24

An amazing player certainly one of the best ever.

I see some papers are still wittering on about the hand of god business 🙄

I can truly understand why football is called the beautiful game when you see clips of Maradona at his best

BrandyMandy · 25/11/2020 19:53

Not surprised with his coke addiction. However he shouldn't be remembered for that as he was a fabulous player. R.I.P

Exactly. He should be remembered for his skill, not his addiction.

I met him once through work, he was amazing and one of those people who had real star quality, we all loved him!

Rest in peace Diego.

RusholmeRuffian · 25/11/2020 20:00

The "hand of god" goal will always be a bitter pill for the English to swallow but his other goal against us in the same game was incredible. He may have had "issues" but he was the best player of all time IMO.

The hand of god business is the only reason I've heard of him if I'm honest, it is a pretty memorable event.

60 is so young; such a shame.

tobee · 25/11/2020 21:05

I don't disagree @PaperTowels . I wasn't meaning to come across as snippy. I'm more observing that, how, not that long ago, he was so high profile. Now, probably doesn't mean much to people under a certain age.

Just awful that a man from such deprived background was seemingly overwhelmed by the fame and fortune.

For me, he was the greatest footballer of all time. I cannot think of any other player who almost single-handedly elevated mediocre domestic and international teams to become champions in the way Maradona did. Plus he did it in an era when he was routinely and brutally kicked over every square inch of the pitch without the kind of protection from referees that current players rightly have. A deeply flawed genius, a deeply flawed man...but oh my days, there is no superlative that can fully capture his ability and impact as a football player. RIP Diego.

This. He was deeply troubled, but equally skillful.

My country is mourning. You will never see anything like it for a sportsman anywhere in the world.
