What age did your LO have chickenpox?

I’m just curious to know what age your children were when they had chickenpox?

And is it more common with bigger families?
(Children with siblings)

My son is 7 and hasn’t had it yet. I’m not worried but curious to know what age children usually catch it as most of my friends children’s seen to have had it when they were younger

DD had it when she was 7 or 8, along with most of her classmates at the time.

DS had it very badly for his 1st birthday. He then caught it again when he was 4 and again when he was 7. It lessened in severity each time and he was barely ill at all on the 3rd time.

Lurkingforawhile · 23/11/2020 22:24

Not my child, but my OH at 30. His brother had it when he was little so no idea how he avoided it. Doctor was great and gave him anti virals straight away which helped mitigate. It was nasty though and he was very fatigued for weeks after.

cheapskatemum · 23/11/2020 22:26

DS1 was 3, he passed it on to DS2 who was 2, he passed it on to DS3 who was only 6 months old & had it very badly 😕. DS 4 wasn’t born then. He caught it when he was 1 and had, literally 10 spots! I think DCs with siblings catch it younger.

2&4. Eldest caught it off cousin (who was 7). Youngest caught it off eldest.

I had it twice... Once at 3/4ish, once at 8/9ish.

Takingabreakagain · 23/11/2020 22:26

DS was about 6 when he got it he then passed it on to his 3month old sister. Both had barely any spots. Younger DD also caught it at a few weeks old from a friend's daughter - she also had very few spots.

Deelish75 · 23/11/2020 22:28

DS was 2 the first time he was exposed to it but didn’t actually have it until he was 4.5 and he was quiet poorly with it - high temp and very sleepy.

DD is nearly 6 and although she’s been exposed to it she hasn’t had it.

I was 5-6 yrs old and quite poorly with it.

doodlejump1980 · 23/11/2020 22:29

Both my twins had it over Christmas and New Year just before they were two. Nightmare.

EcoCustard · 23/11/2020 22:30

Dc1 was 4, Dc2 was 3, Dc3 was 20months. Dc2 had it two weeks exactly after Dc1 came out in spots. Dc3 was two weeks exactly after Dc2 came out in spots. Wasn’t the best 6 weeks as all were sick, high temp, and covered in spots from top to toe. Dc4 hasn’t had it yet, was pregnant at the time. They all had slapped cheek prior to that too. Plenty of their friends have yet to have chicken pox, or hand, foot & mouth or slapped cheek.

MyNameForToday1980 · 23/11/2020 22:30

I caught it on Boxing day when I was 5 (or rather started showing symptoms).

I had DD vaccinated as I hated having The Pox so much - I had a pox on my tongue on Christmas Day (without realising what it was at the time) so I had a grotty festive period.

CtrlU · 23/11/2020 22:31

Thank you for the info. So I take it 7 isn’t that uncommon.

I know this sounds silly but I thought chickenpox was just a spotty rash. I didn’t know it causes fever and can cause children to feel unwell also.

I suppose I have that to look forward to 😳

Twice, aged 2 and 9

lljkk · 23/11/2020 22:32

4.5 yo, 2yo, 2.5yo, 3months. So yeah, all pretty little. Were all immune in later outbreaks.

I had it age 26yo & was completely not ill with it.

Icanflyhigh · 23/11/2020 22:34

DD1 was 18 mths and had it really bad - they were everywhere on her.

DD2 was 6 weeks old the first time (very mild) and 10 years old the second time - proper spotty!

DS1 was 7 and got it quite bad!

Doublechins · 23/11/2020 22:34

I have 4 DC. 2 of them had it when they were 3&4, 3rd was a newborn at the time and didn't get it and still hasn't had it at 5. Youngest is 2 wasn't born when the others had it and still hasn't had it.

rsababe · 23/11/2020 22:35

Dc1 10 months old
Dc2 never despite being exposed several times (not intentionally)

lakeswimmer · 23/11/2020 22:35

Two weeks old for DD - it was very mild but she had to take Zovirax because she was so young. DS1 (2yo) had it when she was born and a few days later she showed symptoms.

DS2 got it a few years later (can't remember at what age) but I don't think DS1 or DD got it again.

StylishMummy · 23/11/2020 22:39

I paid £130 per DC to have them vaccinated against chicken pox. It's no longer a 'right of passage' for children as the vaccine is very effective and relatively cheap compared to 2 weeks or more off work

TheStripes · 23/11/2020 22:41

DC4 had it around nine months and is the only one of my children to have had it. No idea how it was avoided by the others when living with a child who had hundreds and hundreds of spots all over.

dementedpixie · 23/11/2020 22:42

Age 3 for dd and she gave it to ds who was 5½ months old. Ds then had shingles around age 3

Thislittlekitten · 23/11/2020 22:47

My DD had it when she was 2, DS had it at 3. He caught it at nursery. It spread like wildfire there.

Both had it in same months, March, though different years. Apparently around Easterish time is a common time for it.

IRememberSoIDo · 23/11/2020 22:48

Mine were five and eleven months when they had it. Eldest daughter caught it in school and passed it on. Youngest had an absolutely terrible dose and she was really quite little at the time. I had it when I was twelve and was really sick with it. My siblings all just had spots and were a bit itchy but I was bad.

Ltdannygreen · 23/11/2020 22:51

DS12 had them when he was 6 months old, he barely had any spots tbh just a few on his face and arms and no other symptoms.
Dd8 literally just had them 2 weeks Before the beginning of the first lockdown in March. She was only back at school a week before the lockdown. She had them really really bad. Had a fever for like a week.

janj2301 · 23/11/2020 22:54

Brother 1 and sister had it when 5, brothers 2&3 when they were seven, daughters when they are 7 and 9. I've never had it, making sure I get my shingles vaccination next year

Ltdannygreen · 23/11/2020 22:55

DS has been exposed to it 4 times since and never caught it again. Dd had been exposed to it 3 years earlier at school but was the only child not to get it, not sure how she caught it this year, we hadn’t been anywhere and as far as I know there wasn’t any kids with it in her school. I had it when I was 6 and have been exposed numerous times and never caught it again.

TheRubyRedshoes · 23/11/2020 22:56

9 months and very poorly, still has the scars from the deep pock marks.
Unfortunately a very ignorant member of our nct group was desperately trying to infect her older dc and didn't tell us.. I just over heard the conversation as one member let her in '' so whose it going with the pox infecting ''

'' well its keep exposing them but nothing yet '' she didn't realise you are infected before you show symptoms.

I was furious.
