What age did your LO have chickenpox?

I’m just curious to know what age your children were when they had chickenpox?

And is it more common with bigger families?
(Children with siblings)

My son is 7 and hasn’t had it yet. I’m not worried but curious to know what age children usually catch it as most of my friends children’s seen to have had it when they were younger

Dc 1 when he was 7, then less than a week later
Dc 2 when she was 5
Dc 3 when he was 3
Dc 4 when he was 2
all got it on the same day, one of them woke up with it and by lunch time the next one had it, we were just watching dc 4 waiting for them to appear and by bedtime there they were!
The 2 weeks previously they had all been unwell with cold/high temps and were very clingy....... it was an awful exhausting experience! (But not all who have it are ill I know plenty of people who've just had a few spots and wouldn't know there was anything wrong with them..... just saying, don't want to scare you with my horror story! and most people don't have 4 of them with it at the same time!)
Oh and dc 2 also had it when she was 2...... 1 week after dc 3 was born, luckily he didn't catch them.

Same as a pp. I paid for the vaccination - boots do them

aurora12digits · 23/11/2020 23:00

I was 31. Caught from my son aged 4.

I got all of mine vaccinated at the age of one so never. I got it age 7 and was extremely ill so if I were in your shoes I would look into vaccinating. It’s cheap and has a proven track record as most developed nations have had a vaccination programme since the 90s. You can get it at boots.
I don’t understand why more people dont pay for it in this country. It’s cheaper than two weeks off work for most . And I think kids ( specifically ) are more likely to die from Chicken pox than covid but we will all rush out and vaccinate for that. Don’t quote me on that. I am not sure what the stats are. Been trying to search to compare but it’s difficult. The entire population of children isn’t getting it at once over the course or 1 to 2 years. Not sure what the exact %rate is for chickenpox but I think it might be comparable or close.

merryhouse · 23/11/2020 23:02

18 months and nearly 5 (at the same time).

I was 12 when I got it. Brother had it at the same time, aged 7. He actually got it twice.

I remember my older sister had what we were told was shingles ("because she's already had chicken pox and she's older") when she was about 16.

Cecilia2016 · 23/11/2020 23:03

All my 4 children had a very bad chicken pox. My oldest 3 girls had it together aged 6, 4 & 1+ and was really bad and they have some dip scars. My 4th had it this year February and was the chicken pox from hell. He had high temperature and he was covered in big spots and the scars are still not faded and it took him a while to recover. He is 6years.

Yubaba · 23/11/2020 23:03

5, 7 and 9. Ds2 caught it from my niece who was 17m and he gave it to DS1 and then DD. The 4 of them basically had it al the same time and it was a hellish 3 weeks.
DD was the worst, she was very ill with it, the spots were absolutely everywhere

Chesneyhawkes1 · 23/11/2020 23:08

I had it at 21. Was awful 😩my brother still hasn't had it at 39

Takethewinefromtheswine · 23/11/2020 23:09

Dd was 11 months. Pretty shit run for her, she had measles at 6 months.

dontputitinyourmouth · 23/11/2020 23:10

They were both about three when they caught it from nursery I presume. DS1 was so poorly with and absolutely covered in spots that took ages to scab and go, luckily no scars but I was obsessively bathing him in oats every couple of hours and applying virasoothe. DS2 had about ten spots and not ill at all, he got over it really quickly.

I supposedly had it twice when I was younger

Christmasbiscuit · 23/11/2020 23:10
  1. No siblings and no cousins. Not sure where he got it, apparently no one else in nursery had it.
He had a fever and vomiting before spots appeared but the spots were mild. I had a very mild case when I was 7 or 8. We only knew it was chicken pox because all my siblings had it and one was hospitalised.
DappledOliveGroves · 23/11/2020 23:11

DD had it on her second birthday. She was spotty but broadly fine.

I caught it aged 11 - I was in and out of the eye hospital as the spots went into my eyeballs and caused the most excruciating pain, so needed special eye cream. I had a horrible fever, felt absolutely hideous and got covered in scars.

If you can afford to vaccinate then it's probably worth doing.

PapsofJura · 23/11/2020 23:14

Chicken pox can kill so whatever you do, don’t deliberately try to get your child infected as you would never forgive yourself if the worst happened.

YourStarlessEyes · 23/11/2020 23:17

DD1 was 4 and an only child at the time. I guess she picked it up from nursery! One spot got infected and she has a little scar from it but other than that she was ok and didn't get too many. When I had it I was covered from my head to the soles of feet, and generally had an awful experience but surprisingly no scars!

DD2 is almost 3 and hasn't had it yet.

YourStarlessEyes · 23/11/2020 23:17

Oh and DD1 was unwell roughly a week before she had the spots, vomiting and a fever!

ClinkeyMonkey · 23/11/2020 23:18

My eldest was 4 and my youngest just 6 months. I had it at the same time as DS1 - I was 45! We had about half a dozen spots each. About 2 weeks later DS2 caught it and was covered in spots from head to toe.

PenguinsOnParade · 23/11/2020 23:22

DC1 is 16 and has never had them. DC2 i think was about 8 or 9. She only got about half a dozen spots total which weren't that itchy for her so I always forget that she actually had them.

BlueJag · 23/11/2020 23:24

Our son was 6.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/11/2020 23:24

Ds1 (aged 4) came down with chicken pox whilst I was in labour with ds3. He and ds2 (aged 2) were staying with friends of ours while I was in labour, and he had the first spot when he came home - we didn’t realise what it was, because it just looked like a scab - and then the spots started coming out all over him!

Ds2 came down with it a couple of weeks later, and ds3 got it when he was nearly 5 weeks old.

user1477391263 · 23/11/2020 23:24

The vaccine is pretty standard where I live (not in the UK). It does not 100% protect but ensures that they get, at most, an extremely mild case. My kids each got a few small spots (age 8 and 1) for a couple days and temp of 37 for less than one day, with no other symptoms at all--so easy. I really recommend the vaccine and can't believe UK parents continue to put their kids through the full form of this nasty illness.

One friend of mine somehow did not get round to getting her child vaxed and he got the full form--he now has a bunch of noticeable pockmarks on his face that are probably there for good and my poor friend feels really guilty about it.

trufflepiig · 23/11/2020 23:24

3 and 1. DD1 was exposed numerous times in nursery but eventually got it from DC2 who had no known contact. DC3 hasn't had it yet but has hardly been out due to covid.

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 23/11/2020 23:25

My eldest 2 were 17 and 18 passed on by their 7 year old brother, and I to my recollection have never had it but have antibodies for it.

user1477391263 · 23/11/2020 23:26

About 2 weeks later DS2 caught it and was covered in spots from head to toe.

This is the problem--the second person in the household is much more likely to get a very bad form of the illness, because of the huge viral load they are being exposed to. If one sib gets CP get the other one vaxed quickly!

ClaireP20 · 23/11/2020 23:26

My middle child hasn't had it, he is 7. The oldest is 11 and got it when he was 9.

I secretly liked it because I kept him off for over 2 weeks and spoilt him rotten!

Ginandplatonic · 23/11/2020 23:26

Never, they have been vaccinated.
