I’m just curious to know what age your children were when they had chickenpox?

And is it more common with bigger families?
(Children with siblings)

My son is 7 and hasn’t had it yet. I’m not worried but curious to know what age children usually catch it as most of my friends children’s seen to have had it when they were younger

My DS2 was 7. DS3 caught it first age 4. Then DS2 came down with it as DS3 was going back to school!! DS2 got it far worse than his brother, or his stepsister who also caught it, or the nanny's daughter who again, also caught it all from my DS1! DS2 was covered, and was so distressed. Luckily the worst of it was over in 24 hours. Poor little thing 😢.

HazeyJaneII · 24/11/2020 07:42

The dds were 2 and 3, they had it fairly mildly
Ds was vaccinated at 3 because he has medical vulnerabilities.
I had it had 15 and it was bloody awful, I was very ill.
Dh caught it from the dds (he was 40) he was also pretty ill.

ExclamationPerfume · 24/11/2020 07:43

Oldest one was 2.5 years old. She caught it from playgroup. She then gave it to 6 month old DD2. She got it very severely and ended up in hospital.

My eldest got it just before she turned 3. There is a 4 year age gap between children and second child got it when she was 4 (first week of lockdown in March ).

Indoctro · 24/11/2020 07:47

Get the child vaccinated then you don't need to worry about it

Upupupintheair · 24/11/2020 07:49

No DC but I had it age 1 and then again aged 25... wouldn’t recommend as an adult it was horrific

Ilovewillow · 24/11/2020 07:53

My youngest son had it when he was 3, very spotty but felt pretty reasonable. My eldest now 12 has never had it. I was exposed to someone with chicken pox when i was pregnant and given an injection to possibly reduce the symptoms if I got it as only about 8 weeks pregnant at the time. I suspect she has some immunity because of this.

autumngold6 · 24/11/2020 07:54

I had chicken pox at the age of 29. Had no children at the time and don't know where I caught it from. I assume that it was on the bus which I used twice a day for work. My illness was mild - felt awful the day before the spots came out but after that I didn't feel ill at all - probably had a low viral load as not been in direct contact with someone who had it. Up to that point I had thought I was immune as I had been in direct contact with other children with it many times throughout my childhood and never caught it. Luckily I got it out the way before my own children got it just a few years later. Daughter was 3, she must have caught it at play group and she gave it to her brother who was 1.

Twizbe · 24/11/2020 07:55

We vaccinated against it. DH hasn't had it and could be very serious if he caught it.

My older brother was really sick with it too.

poorbuthappy · 24/11/2020 09:06

I had it at 36. Kids were 6,2 and 2. Not the funnest 6 kids we've had

poorbuthappy · 24/11/2020 09:06

As in all at the same time.

NerrSnerr · 24/11/2020 09:08

My eldest had it at 3 and passed it on to her 3 month old brother and he was ok.

borageforager · 24/11/2020 09:13

DC1 had it in Y1, and passed it on DC2 who was 2. DC3 had it in Reception.

TeddyDidIt · 24/11/2020 09:19

My DS caught it at nursery at 2.5 and passed it onto his 1-year-old sister and me. Yeah, that was a fun month - such a long incubation period! I'm actually pleased it was that age as I was just doing casual work from home at that stage so it was quite easy to forget all commitments and stay in our bunker until it was over.

sueelleker · 24/11/2020 09:38

No kids, but my sister and I had it at 9 and 10 (we always caught something and passed it on to the other one)

Knittedfairies · 24/11/2020 09:43

My children were 3 and 6; they then passed it on to my husband aged 38. He was really unwell with it; that was a Christmas to remember...

kittykat35 · 24/11/2020 09:45

Mine are 8 and 5 and have never had it so I have had them vaccinated this year

kittykat35 · 24/11/2020 09:47

@CtrlU if you can afford to get them vaccinated I would do it! Chicken pox is not nice at best and can kill unfortunately. It's rare but it happens. Happened a boy in my village. Sad

CigarsofthePharoahs · 24/11/2020 09:48

My eldest had it age 3 and he was very unwell. The only part of him to escape the spots were the soles of his feet. He had an awful fever and physically couldn't move for a few days. I had to hand feed him and put him back in nappies. One of his friends ended up hospitalised with an infected spot.
My youngest, then four months old, caught it and thus proved that a breastfed baby where the mum has immunity can indeed catch it, but he wasn't anything like as ill.
If you can afford the vaccination, please get it. I didn't know it existed or I would have. Both my boys have permanent scarring.

Missmonkeypenny · 24/11/2020 09:52

DD is 6 and has never had it, we vaccinated her at 3 and will be vaccinating DS when he turns 1 next month due to someone in very close family being immunocompromised who has never had it

spiderlight · 24/11/2020 10:02

The Easter of Y1, so he'd have been 6. It went round his primary at the same time every year. He had it incredibly lightly - no more than about ten spots, not itchy, no other symptoms - so I kept expecting him to get it again 'properly', but he never has.

Itmaybeus · 24/11/2020 10:20

Dc1 aged 1 and 3 years old.
Dc2 3 and 4 years old.
Dc3 3 years old.

Sober4Summer20 · 24/11/2020 10:22

My little girl was 2 and my little boy was 1 xx

helloxhristmas · 24/11/2020 10:22
  1. It was absolutely horrendous DT 2 got it 1 week after DT1 and we had 5 weeks of awfulness. I somehow had no idea you could get a vaccine but if I had y time again I absolutely would.

We ended up in A&E with one of them with suspected sepsis. Fortunately it wasn't but all the spots had become infected and she was very ill.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 24/11/2020 10:23

DS1 - 2.
DS2 - never. Now 14. (He was newborn when ds1 had it)
