Long term smoker. Halfway through today cigarettes have started to taste awful. Wth?

I have smoked for several years, I know I need to quit but it has been a crux through a difficult time.

This morning when I had one it was fine and taste the way they always do, then half way through the day when I had another it tastes disgusting and totally different.

I thought it might be a bad batch so I bought another packet in a different shop, got a different brand just incase and low and behold the exact same plastic/chemical/acrid taste.

My partner smokes occasionally and insists he can't tell a difference which is making me think I'm losing the plot!

Clutching at straws but I was using a sizable amount of mould spray today in the shed so I'm wondering if ingesting that has caused it.

Any ideas? Confused

Covid?

Pregnancy?

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 23/11/2020 20:57

Any chance you might be pregnant?

DianaT1969 · 23/11/2020 21:00

Covid? How's your sense of smell?

In any case, the universe really to want to help you give up! Now's the time 👍

MacDuffsMuff · 23/11/2020 21:01

I would suggest you get a CoVID test.

NancysDream · 23/11/2020 21:02

Another one saying you need a test! Covid, and possible a pregnancy one too!

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 23/11/2020 21:02

Up the duff!

Lilll · 23/11/2020 21:03

I've had covid (possibly twice according to the genomics people - I'm part of a study)

Possibly in March but then confirmed by test in July after another bout of illness.

I can taste and smell everything else just fine, no change to my taste buds where food and drink are concerned.

It's really bloody weird.

Using chemicals do that to me , especially bleach smell

Lilll · 23/11/2020 21:05

Pregnancy is unlikely as I'm on contraception, but I appreciate nothing is %100. I'm not due on my period for another three days. Oh crap.

I was hoping somebody would say yeah it's the mould spray Grin

I’m voting chemivals too

I try to avoid in the home now as I was noticing it would affect me for a while after

purplecorkheart · 23/11/2020 21:06

I still would take a covid test just to be safe and also a pregnancy test.

pompey38 · 23/11/2020 21:07

Yes , I cannot go to swimming pools either because of the chlorine smell , these two are the only chemicals that do that . It will go away , have some hot drink and give it few hours

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 23/11/2020 21:07

When I was pregnant with my first this happened to me, but with gin. I bloody loved my gin and one day I just couldn't drink it, I thought it had gone off it tasted awful to me. Had no idea I was pregnant until then.

BlackCatShadow · 23/11/2020 21:09

I also agree that it could be the chemicals. When I quit smoking, I did so by taking up swimming because the chlorine meant smoking tasted disgusting, like drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth.

MLMbotsgoaway · 23/11/2020 21:10

I’m a smoker - seize this opportunity to quit op! I would if I could

Sideorderofchips · 23/11/2020 21:10

Pregnant? I had the same with all of mine

Lillygolightly · 23/11/2020 21:10

I’ve not smoked for years and years now but back when I did the first clue I was pregnant with DD1 was the fact cigarettes suddenly tasted awful and I lost my desire to smoke. For a few days I kept lighting a cigarette out of habit and then after a few puffs ended up putting it out. It still didn’t occur to me I might be pregnant until I gagged on my cornflakes one morning, I POAS that evening and sure enough it was positive.

I would take a test if I were you.

chipsandpeas · 23/11/2020 21:12

when i smoked, after id been at swimming ciggies tasted very weird for a while due to the chlorine so could be chemicals

Puddingypops · 23/11/2020 21:13

I’ve had this happen several times over many years. I know the exact taste. It will just stop, mine have lasted from days to a week or more (my entire honeymoon it happened that was 10 days)

Sevo7 · 23/11/2020 21:13

I used to have this problem when I smoked. I was very particular about which brand I smoked as I only liked certain ones but I noticed if I’d bleached the floors or bathroom my cigarettes would taste weird, like the cheap fake fags I used to buy as a teenager. I still get it with my vape but it tastes like cooking oil rather than flavoured and the bad taste doesn’t last as long as I did with fags.

wishthiswasreallife · 23/11/2020 21:14

Long time smoker here..I can't smoke for hours after I bleach my bathroom because it tastes and smells so bad Envy

ThatDamnScientist · 23/11/2020 21:15

Covid was the first thing that jumped out at me.

It is a change in taste/smell- not just a loss of. You need to test and isolate.

Lilll · 23/11/2020 21:17

I'm glad I posted, I'm sufficiently reassured that I'm not losing the plot. To hear others say they've had this happen after using chemicals/swimming is music to my ears Grin

I will see if I can get a covid test just incase, if you think they won't consider me a time waster? I'm almost certain it won't be that, but given that the taste thing is a symptom it's probably best to have one.

Ditto a pregnancy test though I think I would rather have covid again

This! I used to buy the odd jin ling from other teens at school because I was a little shit and today my cigarettes tasted exactly the same, complete with the slight burny mouth feeling that I never usually get with my regular smokes.
