What is the best kitchen work surface?

So much choice out there and I am struggling to get my head around them.

I don't want wood, or solid granite.

I do want something which is really simple to care for, hygienic and robust.

What do you have that you love? What do you have that you hate and I should avoid.

Not wood...looks nice but lots of maintenance

Echo not wood

Corian is nice and lovely to clean

Wood effect laminate.

Not wood or granite.

I loved my formica type. It was hard wearing, cheap and I could bleach and scrub to my hearts content.

We're getting quartz.

Laminate - get a good brand. We're on our second Duropal worktop and love it (two diff houses)
