IKEA kallax woes - please give me your positive stories!

After a weekend of moving DS2's bedroom furniture to accommodate a wall mounted TV, it turns out it walls are too shit to take the bracket. So I'm looking for something to stand the TV on instead. IKEA kallax would be perfect but the 2x2 cube is too small and the 4x4 won't fit. So my question is, can I create a 3x3 cube out of a 2x2, two 1x2 and a 1x1? Really hoping somebody out there has done this and can tell me it'll work and look ok!

Thanks

There is a planner on the IKEA site where you can try this out. I’ve been using it with Kaplan to plan a sewing station.

Kallax not Kaplan

Are they plasterboard walls?

I'm not sure the Kallax would work in that way as the outside edges are thicker than the inside ones.

I don't see why not, but definitely make sure all those on top are fastened to the wall to stop them sliding off accidentally. I made a stepped Kallax cupboard next to the stairs out of 1x4 cube (2 wide 2 high) with 1x1 cube on top and 1x1 cube to the side, if that makes sense. Fastened the 1x4 and top 1x1 cube to the wall.

Could you not look for a local joiner/ handyman? That is the sort of thing my ds could put together in half a day.
What about a small chest of drawers or a bedside unit?

JellyBellies · 23/11/2020 10:18

Yes to outside edges being thicker than the inside edges. Have you accounted for that in the calculations?

I had exactly this problem (wanted a two by three) and did think about DIYing it, but it seemed like such a faff.

I instead found exactly what I needed at Great Little Trading Company - they do a three by three here: www.gltc.co.uk/collections/cube-storage/products/abbeville-nine-cube-storage-white

Way more expensive, but so much easier!

If you google 3x3 Kallax a couple of alternative companies come up that actually do a 3x3. I'd check that there isnt something off the shelf that will fit the space before trying to hack the Kallax to work.

NameChangePropertyAdvice · 23/11/2020 10:51

Thanks - plasterboard walls over old timber frame. Think it would be ok to attach the kallax to but not sure strength enough for a TV mount 🤔

What he likes about the kallax is that you can get glass shelves and doors - which would stop his Lego models getting dusty 😂 haven't found an alternative 3x3 that you can do this with. But will look on, thanks all!

Argos do a 2x3 version, as we needed that set up ourselves.

3littlemonkeys82 · 23/11/2020 10:54

Would the 4 x 3 fit?

stodgystollen · 23/11/2020 10:59

They do a 3x1. You could stack 3 of them. Alternately, get a 3x1 and put it on legs so that it looks like a more sophisticated piece of furniture, and you can store things under it. Do an image search for 'kallax on legs' for some ideas.

catsarebetterthandogs9 · 23/11/2020 11:34

What about the 4x3 stood up? (So 3 wide, 4 high)

I can't see a 3x1 - could you post a link please? That would be a better solution than my idea!

Sadly not - would be too high for the screen to sit on ☹️

Stack 3 of these? With a small gap either side maybe

TeaMilkNonePlease · 23/11/2020 13:04

Have you seen their Eket range? It isn't thicker in the outer sides than the central bars so would mix and match more easily.

IliveonCoffee · 23/11/2020 13:11

How big is the gap you have to fill?

Does it have to be the kallax? I have the besta downstairs as my tv stand. Its similar to the kallax with 'inserts', extra shelves, doors sort of thing but works from a TV stand base rather than the cube base.

There is a planner too

Ah sorry, it looks like the 3x1 is a regional variation not available in the UK. That's mean

CarolNoE · 23/11/2020 14:43

The Argos ones you need to look for are Square Plus, the Square ones are flimsy but square plus take the kallax cloth cubes. Good luck.

InvisibleToEveryone · 23/11/2020 14:48

IKEA do a tv unit like kallax,

this?? But may be too big??

wowfudge · 23/11/2020 14:48

Eket are slightly smaller than Kallax - I've got two cupboards and a four cube unit stacked on one side in my home office.

NameChangePropertyAdvice · 24/11/2020 13:56

Eket ordered, thanks all 😁
