What's the oddest thing you have found while beachcombing?

Hello fellow beach combers!
I have been combing for 8 years now, and have found a lot of weird things over the years, from a deceased sea turtle (huge! And so smelly) to binoculars, money, half a sail boat and an engine block.

Anyone else trawl the shores for goodies? Find anything cool?

I know its not that unusual but mermaids purses. Such odd looking things.

Haggisfish · 23/11/2020 18:22

I found a whole dead whale on a very remote Scottish beach once.

Oxyiz · 23/11/2020 18:26

God I miss living near a beach. I'd do almost anything to be able to go on a long walk with the fresh sea breeze and wave sounds right now.

dementedma · 23/11/2020 18:26

Lots of sea glass. An old key. Bits and bobs. Lots of plastic waste.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 23/11/2020 18:46

@willowtree66

I found a human mandible. Looked like it had been lying there for years (it was on a sand bar) as was very sun bleached. Took it to the police and they combed the area for more bones (didn't find any) and also sent it away for DNA testing. Never heard anything back though.
Are you NE Scotland (Angus) Willowtree66?? Am sure last summer or the summer before someone turned up a jaw bone on MY beach. I only go in the winter, the summer visitors make me cross! Same beach went through a phase of throwing up mines/bombs a good while back, and often still get those a bit further down.

A dead porpoise once, and a live seal on another occasion! And once the dog ate a jelly fish Not sure that really counts though

Mermaids Purses, sea glass, fancy pebbles, usually agates quartzes or an occasional geode and once a lovely starfish

We are so lucky to live right by the sea, I love it! We have lots of odd pebbly coves and beaches just minutes from the house, the other dead porpoise beach is beautiful long almost white sand bay with dunes, and is probably under ten minutes in the car.

Lots of hagstones once at Chesil Beach, it was weird as we had been talking about them and then suddenly every stone we picked up had a hole in...it was getting very strange.

I have dragged home fish boxes sometimes, I always mean to plant them up, the bossy warnings on the side make me laugh
Creels...usually broken
Buoys
Often bring home bits of wood for the fire too.

@LintonTravelTavern Yes that’s what I think looking it back. I was picking up small pebbles and picked it up, panicked and threw it away. Now I’m older I would probably report it, but at the time it was a shock and I panicked.

LaurieScafferIsAllBitterNow I'm on Moray Firth not far from Inverness 😁

Seafog · 24/11/2020 16:19

I was beachcombing yesterday, and while on the shore, got a call for a job interview (in two hours from now) and if it pans out, that will be my best beach win in a bit. Cross your fingers for me, if you are that sort?

I think that's where my adoration of scottish beaches comes from...I was born in Elgin and my parents had friends there so even when we moved we'd be back for visits

and there seems to be a lot of lost jaw bones on beaches!

Seafog · 24/11/2020 18:45

@Oxyiz thank you! I got the jobGrin and it's within walking distance

@LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow you are right about jaw bone, I found one washed up with the teeth still in it, but really loose. I think there was a tiny amount of sand in it was well. We used it as a musical shaker Grin

A rock that looked like a mini skull. It had eye sockets and everything. It freaked me out so I threw it away.

Sarahandduck18 · 24/11/2020 18:54

I’ve found a couple of glass stoppers.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 24/11/2020 18:57

On a small beach in north Devon, mostly only used by locals. 10+ shoes after a storm, all left feet. Presumably the right feet all got washed up somewhere else.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 24/11/2020 20:16

These are my favourite finds which I found on West Runton Beach in Norfolk. One is a fossilised sea urchin and you can clearly see the foot on the bottom. I'm not sure what the other one is but it looks like some sort of fossilised claw!

Those interested in this topic, if you're on Twitter follow *@LegoLostAtSea* it's a fascinating account which shares lots of mystery items washed up!
Thanks for that, I nipped on here for five minutes and spent half an hour on Twitter ConfusedGrin

I go metal detecting (with a very basic metal detector) on the local Devon beaches when time allows. Best place as Crown land so it's allowed. Never found anything significant but it's great therapy - totally in the zone!

Oddest thing I've found - a naked man pleasuring himself in a very relaxed manner on a deserted stretch of beach. Police were called!

Chutneymaura · 25/11/2020 16:48

On Saturday there were hundreds of 2ft long bits of scaffold board on the beach. I picked up 20 and am currently drying them out - plan to make an outdoor dining table from them 😬

TowandaForever · 25/11/2020 16:52

@Seafog

It looks like a jelly sweet!!!

This is another recent find....

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 25/11/2020 16:55

Live right at the beach. Ddog is always finding rubbish and ddog toys. A few seals lately - sat awaiting a push back in!!
Someone in the NE maybe found a brand new Swatch watch way back in the 1980's. Bff had taken it off to sunbathe and I hid it RIGHT THERE BESIDE US... never found it. Her df was furious...
