Dog not eating

My 6 year old jack russell has suddenly lost interest in food. But is ok in every other way.
He always has been a fussy eater, since weds he has not hardly eaten, i have tried all the usual remedies Such as walking before his dinner, shredded chicken, normal roast chicken, sausages etc.
He seems to go to his bowl, sniffs and walks away or picks a bit up then spits it out.
Really not sure what to do or what reasons this may be.

Could be a number of reasons and Tbh as its been going on since Wednesday I'd take him to the vet to get a checked over.

Dontbelikeme · 22/11/2020 14:26

Tooth abscess, see a vet.

I was thinking dental problem as well.

Our vet is operating a good system, if others are mostly the same. You call from outside the vet's at appointment time & go over the problem. The dog is then collected by an assistant. The vet phones after examining the dog & discusses treatment etc. I would definitely take in a dog that's not eating.

I have just managed to get him to eat 3 slices corned beef and handful of grated cheese, probably not ideal but he ate a bit. But they are soft so maybe it is a dentsl problem. When he does eat he isn't being sick or diarrhoea and is still drinking water. I gave him a good praise and told him how pleased i was to try and encourage again.

Don't want to scare you but this happened to my dog last month and he had a scan in the end as over space of few weeks he went from eating every other day to once every 3 days then nothing at all but would drink water. Seemed fine the vet thought he was depressed from loosing our other dog but found out it was very progressive cancer he had to be put down same day he was 7. I'm still in shock now. It could be loads of things. But I would go to the vet to rule out anything serious

pinkkoala · 22/11/2020 17:35

Oh i so sorry for you, that must of been a real shock, you must be devastated. I am going to call the vet tomorrow morning, not sure if i will get an appointment, i work shifts so am working 1pm til 7pm tomorrow so lets see what they say.
Anyone know if i have to contact the pet insurance company. Never needed to before but he has the top cover with 50.00 excess.

You'll need to look at the terms of your policy, they're all a bit different.

I have been watching my dog tonight, he has been playing with his toys and putting them in his mouth, would he do that if his teeth hurt, some of the toys are quite solid.

I'd be more worried that he's nauseous or something is going on to affect his appetite eg kidney or liver dysfunction - I'd want a full examination and bloods and possibly a scan. Definitely vets.

pinkkoala · 22/11/2020 21:50

I am going to be ringing my vets in the morning.
I have premier cover for him so do i need to sort that first. 50.00 excess.

Will he eat if you hand feed him ? Both my girls go through spells of refusing food but will eat from my hand

ShedFace · 22/11/2020 22:26

This happened to our dog and it turned out he had a tiny bit of rubber ball stuck and needed an operation. I’d get him checked out just to be safe!

pinkkoala · 22/11/2020 22:44

He did the other night, but tried wrapping his wet dog food in corned beef and that wasn't happening. Only if corned beef on its own. Saturday night he ate whole hreast of chicken as i played a game with him to get him to eat. So he can't have anything stuck as he is still eating.
Really puzzled on this one.
