I’ve just really enjoyed Aldi’s new goats cheese. I love Manchego, Feta, Reed Leicester and so many more

Please provide a brief description of your favourite cheese if it is a less well known one in the UK .

Yes, very strong flavours too.

AgeLikeWine · 21/11/2020 20:16

I was born & grew up in Derbyshire and now live in Leicestershire, so it’s got to be the East Midlands’ gift to the world : Stilton, the king of cheeses.

rookiemere · 21/11/2020 20:16

Have just ordered some Royal Briard with truffle in the middle from our local cheese van. Love anything with truffle.

Shorrocks Lancashire Bomb

Malaka

Cakemonger · 21/11/2020 20:17

shepherds purse yorkshire blue

InTheLongGrass · 21/11/2020 20:17

Yarg is mild, heading towards a hard cheese, but crumbly in the middle, and creamier at the outside with an edible, nettle wrapped, rind.

TheGonnagle · 21/11/2020 20:18

Brillat savarin . Lush and creamy soft cheese. Ideally the truffled one.

BBCK · 21/11/2020 20:19

Thank you. Sounds like something I would enjoy

I haven’t met a cheese I don’t like. But Black Bomber and Blacksticks Blue. And dirty dairylea on toast

BBCK · 21/11/2020 20:20

I thought I knew about cheese but I’m
Hearing so many new varieties. This is great!

Anything that is ripe. I don't understand people eating cheese before it's ready.

I found a packet of feta hiding in the corner of the fridge the other week that was a good couple of months past its 'use by' date. The texture had changed completely. It was no longer crumbly but had a smooth silkiness to it - and it tasted amazing! Very un-fetalike. DD number One and I ate the thing in one go. Just took turns cutting chunks off it. "This is amazing!"

happysunr1se · 21/11/2020 20:21

Cremet by Sharphams, a soft mould rinded goats cheese with added clotted cream.

TurquoiseDragon · 21/11/2020 20:21

Colston Bassett blue cheese is stilton, is it not? Unless they've introduced a new blue cheese.

I like some stilton, but don't have it often, as I'm the only one who likes it.

DD and I like several soft goat's cheeses, especially the garlic and herbs one from Aldi. My favourite goat's cheese is one from Morrison's that is cut into rounds in the deli and wrapped in cling film, then put out on a deli stand.

DD, DS and I all like Red Leicester. DS likes a medium cheddar, while DD and I like an extra vintage, sharper cheddar. I sometimes also eat a smoked cheddar with crackers and tomatoes for lunch, very nice.

i sometimes have halloumi for cooking with, eg cubes roasted with tomatoes for lunch.

I also like feta for salads, and I'm thinking of trying more cheeses. There's a whole load of cheeses I've never tried.

AuthorsOfForever · 21/11/2020 20:22

Brie. Or Wensleydale with cranberries. Yum yum. Also, just love a chunk of cheddar. And Red Leicester. 🧀

Upupupintheair · 21/11/2020 20:22

Comte, reblochon and morbier are my top three. I’m half French so give me some cheese and a baguette and I’m in heaven!

Peachypips78 · 21/11/2020 20:22

Cornish Blue is a lovely blue. And Sharpham Brie is lovely.

Love Brie de Meaux but it stinks the whole house out!

CosyQueen · 21/11/2020 20:23

Properly stinky blue cheese is the best food in the entire world - I restrict myself from buying it apart from at Christmas otherwise I would be the size of a house Grin
But I have one pot at Christmas all to myself and throughly enjoy it Wine

Peachypips78 · 21/11/2020 20:24

As accompaniments Aldi's rosemary crackers and Otter Vale Devon Fire or onion and pineapple.

Can you tell I'm from Devon Grin

BBCK · 21/11/2020 20:25

Morbier!!!!! Haven’t had this since I lived in France several decades ago. Agree that it’s a lovely cheese.

Colston Bassett is Stilton yes, but from the dairy in Colston Bassett.

It's more creamy than the standard Stilton from Tesco etc

Magpiecomplex · 21/11/2020 20:27

Epoisses is a very strong, smelly, washed-rind cheese, so it looks similar to ripe camembert but is much smellier. It's gorgeous, but needs to be kept away from any other food to avoid the smell taking over. Ami du Chambertin is similar. Always guaranteed me two seats on the train!

TheGonnagle · 21/11/2020 20:27

We have a very stinky piece of rollright in the fridge this evening (purchased this afternoon at the cheese market outside our local wine merchant) that is singing me a cheese song. I haven’t had it before but it’s a beautifully ripe, bark rinded reblochon type cheese. I might have to fetch it now we’re talking about cheese!

TurquoiseDragon · 21/11/2020 20:29

Other cheeses I've tried and liked (and should have again) are Gorgonzola (a blue cheese), Provolone, and Taleggio (which seemed like a harder version of Mozzarella).

No other cheddar matches Black Bomber.

I just love cheese - from anywhere. We are so good at making cheese in this country, and can match any cheese from anywhere else IMO.

One of my favourite past-times is going to food festivals, and I always make a beeline for he cheese stalls.
