Properly shaken up - really hurt (intentionally) whilst shopping

I was in Tesco about an hour ago - it was pretty busy but people all had masks on and were trying their best in the main to keep their distance ... as was I.

I don't really know what happened exactly, or why he did it, but I was picking up some fromage frais - nobody particularly close by - and I suddenly got shoved from behind. Turned my head to be presented with a alpha male type who lifted his arm (trying to explain that this was very much intentional and meant to hurt) and elbowed me in the back of the ribs with some real force. It was enough to wind me and cause me some real pain.

He walked off pretty briskly but squared up to me (from a distance) when I shouted after him "what the hell do do you think you're doing? You're an idiot!" (not my finest moment and probably very unwise but I was so shocked), although I think he thought better of it when he realised how many people were around. I was walking away by then, trying to calm myself down (had horrid heart palpitations - probably due to the adrenaline!) and just get away from the situation.

A couple of women (separately) caught up to me to see if I was ok/say they'd seen what happened/congratulate me on pulling him up on it - which was very kind, but I am still super tearful and shaken up. I'm a 42 yr old woman, FFS, really need to get a grip, have a glass of wine and forget about it.

Anyone remember the woman innocently walking across Chelsea Bridge only to be shoved into the path of a bus by a thug?

I’m so sorry this happened to you OP. Sometimes they just do it because they can.
Don’t you dare critic yourself for shouting after him.
Brava for doing so. Flowers

jessstan1 · 21/11/2020 18:38

Please do report it op. It was a deliberate act of violence! If the man gets away with it, with you, he might do worse to someone else.

I do hope you manage to go back and report it, what a horrible man and a horrible thing to have happened. Flowers

thelegohooverer · 21/11/2020 18:41

Even if nothing comes of reporting to the police, the security will watch the cctv footage and keep an eye out for him. Security guards share this kind of information with each other too so he will be watched in other shops.

Even if the police can’t press charges, reporting will put him on the radar and may help later.

I’m really sorry this happened to you.

StumpedOnceMore · 21/11/2020 18:42

Gosh sorry I’ve just done what I berate other people for doing not rtft. Didn’t realise it had been mentioned.

MollyButton · 21/11/2020 18:44

Please report it on 101, they can get the CCTV.
At least it needs to be know that this guy is out there.

And take care of yourself. I'm sure you did nothing wrong.

Elderflower14 · 21/11/2020 18:44

I would 100%report... Sending huge hugs....

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/11/2020 18:46

Call101. I imagine the will take it seriously. It’s assault.

Tesco will have cctv.

dappledsunshine · 21/11/2020 18:47

I'm also saying report op, don't let him get away with this, I'm raging on your behalf!

Alez · 21/11/2020 18:48

You should report it, and I bet it won't be too late. Tesco will be covered in CCTV. If he bought anything with a card they'll be able to get his name. If he came in a car they'll have his plate. If he comes in again, security can be on the look out.

Wyntersdiary · 21/11/2020 18:49

My cousin's friend was punched in the ribs by a random stranger once just walked past swung a punch and walked off. She passed away as ( and I'm not entirely sure on the story but I'll try) the rib broke off into one of her organs and she died that evening.

I'm sure that stranger didn't think a punch would kill her but it did just for his entertainment / anger issues.

Left her 4 year old with out a mum. I have no tolerance for assholes and would have gone ape on him including calling security because it is assault.

FredtheFerret · 21/11/2020 18:50

Please report it. Ring Tesco and the police and explain.

As everyone else has said they should have CCTV. At the least he could be hopefully identified and barred from the store. He is likely to do it to other women if he gets away with it.

Alez · 21/11/2020 18:50

And also I'm really sorry this happened to you. Some people are just nasty and I'm sure you did nothing wrong. There's nothing wrong with what you did after - it's very understandable.

GabsAlot · 21/11/2020 18:51

get in touch with tesco explain it all and what time it happened they should have it on cctv

did they never catch that jogger on the bridge

VulvaPerson · 21/11/2020 18:52

Another saying report. There will be cctv, and even if he didn't pay by card, chances are he will be identified if he goes there regularly.

EvaporatedHour · 21/11/2020 18:54

Definitely report to the police. If that man does things like that to strangers in public then what does he do when there are no witnesses around?! Hope you're ok and not too shaken up. xx

AcornAutumn · 21/11/2020 18:54

@VulvaPerson

Another saying report. There will be cctv, and even if he didn't pay by card, chances are he will be identified if he goes there regularly.
Yes. And they may know if he’s done it before. Please report this.

I’m so sorry this happened to you.

GreenlandTheMovie · 21/11/2020 18:55

So you think he just punched you for kicks? He wasn't trying to get at an item or anything? He came up to you in a quiet part of the store so that no-one else would intervene?

Was he clean and tidy looking? ie "respectable.

How upsetting, but I agree that you should report it to the police. They will contact the store for cctv. A record needs to be made of this in case he does it to anyone else.

This is the sort of situation my kicking reflex comes to the fore in, I must admit (I did get grabbed by a man when I was walking home one night and I did hack away at his legs and he let me go, police were very helpful and showed me a variety of photos so they could try and track him down).

HollowTalk · 21/11/2020 18:57

Report it tonight and ask them to check the CCTV. Hopefully he bought something in the store with a card.

SherryPalmer · 21/11/2020 18:58

I would also tell the supermarket. The security guards/staff might well be able to ID him from the CCTV. I used to work in a supermarket and it’s amazing how well you know the local community. Someone able to do something like that has probably made themselves noticeable in other ways.

PurpleFlower1983 · 21/11/2020 18:58

Please report this OP, he may do this to someone else who is hurt worse than you. Flowers

Osquito · 21/11/2020 19:01

So sorry that has happened - I’ve had similar, years ago, and understand your bafflement.

I’d still report it to Tesco because he may be the type to return in a few weeks and try it on another person.

Laarkawaay · 21/11/2020 19:01

Report it - no way was this a one off and you could something dreadful happening. Cctv can put him on the store watch list for future visits.

MissEliza · 21/11/2020 19:03

That's really scary. Please report it. I bet it's not the first time he's done that.
