Are personalised name signs above the cot tacky?

Hi! I was wondering if these personalised name signs are seen as being tacky or trashy? I would like to get one for my baby girl to hang above her cot. Thanks. :)

It's not my thing but if you like it then you should definitely have it.

DramaAlpaca · 20/11/2020 22:43

To be honest I'm not keen and it's not something I'd want, but if you like it just get one. It's your home, after all.

Flowersmakemyday · 20/11/2020 22:44

Why does it matter what anyone else thinks? Your babies nursery is a place that you choose how to decorate and it should be with things that you like.

Not to my taste, but who cares what anyone else thinks? 🤷‍♀️

Peridotty · 20/11/2020 22:45

I like it, but not love it. I’m just not sure what to decorate that large space above the cot. I have decals already. My impression is that it IS slightly tacky but not sure!! Why don’t you like them?

I think the design you have shown actually looks really pretty so wouldn't say tacky at all. It's just how you style it I suppose.

UrsulaLittleBear · 20/11/2020 22:46

I think it’s quite sweet and if you like it just go for it. Surely you’re not going to have anyone who might judge you for it in your baby’s room anyway?

Lou573 · 20/11/2020 22:48

Not my thing but if you like it go for it. It does make me slightly nervous having anything hanging above a baby’s head like that though!

CosyAcorn · 20/11/2020 22:48

If Rebecca De Winter emblazoned every item she touched with a big R and be the 30s ideal of elegance then you can have your child's name above their crib. That's my philosophy, anyway Grin

Merename · 20/11/2020 22:51

It’s a tacky from me. But like others say, totally up to you!

plumpootle · 20/11/2020 22:54

Not the point but what a strange pic of a baby in the photo. Is it a doll? Why is it swaddled and have a massive flower on its head??

MaverickDanger · 20/11/2020 22:55

What about photos or framed pictures instead?

We’ve put up a mini bookshelf with hanging rail to use up space instead.

olderthanyouthink · 20/11/2020 22:58

I think so but that particular one isn't that bad.

Not like the kids going to be able to read it though.

How about a big canvas with abstract art?

A mirror?

Gathre mats are nice and look good hung on the wall

Artificial/dried flower arrangement?

OverTheRubicon · 20/11/2020 22:59

I wouldn't put up anything above a cot that has any weight to it, as it can fall or as they grow they can knock or grab them.

Other than that, knock yourself out! It's about a room that will make you happy and your child feel safe, secure and happy. If that's Elmo wall stickers, or Pinterest style name art or oppressively stylish grey and wood scandi nurseries, it's all good...

allfurcoatnoknickers · 20/11/2020 23:01

I don't mind them! I have this shark name plate from Etsy, but I don't have it hung above the cot because I'm worried about it falling off and braining SS.

CommunistLegoBloc · 20/11/2020 23:01

I think tacky but equally if I loved something and someone else declared it tacky then I wouldn't care. I just wouldn't choose the name thing myself.

A few pictures, a picture rail with books on, a shelf with a few toys on?

Peridotty · 20/11/2020 23:04

I have some woodland animal decals along the top of the cot so I thought having framed pictures or canvases of her newborn photos might look strange. My other options were: floral hoop wreaths, a branch with fake leaves on, framed pictures of foliage OR decals of little trees.

You asked 'why don't you like them'

Firstly let me say, it's your baby, your house, do what makes YOU happy. Most of MN would hate my house. I give zero fucks!

But you ASKED, so here goes....

The baby can't read it.

It's not interesting fir the baby to look at, or practical.

Unless you have twins, anyone going in the room should know the baby's name

I just don't get WHY someone would do that?

But like I say do what makes YOU happy.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 20/11/2020 23:08

It's also generally hated on MN, but if I wanted to fill the space I'd probably get a wall sticker. I don't like shelves, hanging things, pictures above a bed or a cot.

I'm also happy with paint! I don't feel the need to fill every space!!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 20/11/2020 23:09

If I had to choose between the name or those other things, the name would win hands down!!

Peridotty · 23/11/2020 23:21

Thanks all for your input!! I got the letters and it did make me happy. Hope it looks good when it comes!
