Topiramate & foul tasting drinks

Has anyone else experienced drinks - fizzy drinks - tasking disgusting? Foods all ok, still squash, fruit juice all ok. Pepsi Max, Lucozade, other softs gah Sad I haven't developed courage to try beer, cider, sparkling wine, champers yet. Which is going to cause irrefutable problems over Christmas.

Anybody had this with Topiramate? Please tell me it quickly disappears.

I have been on a very similar drug (acetazolamide/diamox) since July and have the same issue with fizzy drinks Sad for me they taste sort of flat and metallic.

I’m getting used to it now. Cider has always been okay (not the same, but acceptable) so I would say try a bunch of different things. Weirdly M&S lemonade is my new favourite thing because it tastes completely normal compared to Coke which tastes weird.

KillingOksana1 · 21/11/2020 09:45

Sorry OP. Having spent years on the stuff before it doesn't get better.

Also, you'll have to be carefull about drinking. Alcohol and topiromate don't go together. So much so they give it to alcoholics as treatment.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 22/11/2020 17:46

Sorry op, I had this the entire time I was on it, (4 years before gave up on it as wasn't helping the condition I was taking it for) was addicted to soft drinks before I was on it and woke up after about a week on it, took one sip and spat it out and the taste was so bad I went from about 2 litres a day to nothing and even the thought of it was enough to turn me.

I was a very cheap round in a pub as no soft drinks or alcohol so was dilute squash or juice.

jajabanks · 22/11/2020 17:54

When I was in it coke tasted disgusting and I didn't drink the first few months on it. Im not on anymore but I actually think my taste came back and things were normal again after a while

This is a very common side effect of topirimate. It got me off my Diet Coke habit for good!

SimplySteveRedux · 22/11/2020 20:14

Bah, looks like I'm stuck with no booze over Christmas then and fizzies off the menu. GP is convinced it's the best medication available for reducing incidences of severe migraine, and has a side effect of weight loss (which was the thing I forgot to ask in my OP); anybody experienced weight loss with it?

Also, you'll have to be carefull about drinking. Alcohol and topiromate don't go together.

Please define "don't go together" Grin, what about if I go from 0 to shitfaced in 15 minutes? GrinGrinGrin

Thank you for all the replies, I was originally thinking I could have COVID-19, then google mentioned this SE of Topiramate....

Yes I lost about a stone (would have liked more 😂) but then that evened off too. Just had a smaller appreciate and no need to snack. Was fantastic for my migraines, sadly I now have an allergy to it and had to stop taking it. Absolutely gutted as it changed my life. Hope it works for you

LaBodDelMed · 22/11/2020 20:49

I am on this for migraines and it is excellent.
I completely lost my appetite for the first few months. Did eventually stabilise. I did lose weight - but I had gained a lot of weight from another migraine drug which didn’t suit me, so it was only that weight I lost.
No issue with fizzy drinks tasting odd. Equally no issues with booze, thankfully!

justilou1 · 22/11/2020 20:51

I have been taking this for nearly five years now. You get used to it. It also makes you drink more water! I have to say that I don’t notice the drinks thing anymore.

whatnametopick · 22/11/2020 21:41

The effects of fizzy drinks wore off but I was like a zombie and literally couldn't be left alone and had murderous intentions so came off it Shock

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 23/11/2020 15:51

I lost almost 5 stone while I was on it, have regained quite a bit now

SlartBartFast · 23/11/2020 17:38

I lost weight on it but it didn't affect my sense of taste, and it also didn't help my migraines.

WishIWasSomewhereElse · 23/11/2020 17:54

It's not only fizzy drinks, I found it affects my ability to enjoy Refreshers (the fizzy, chalky ones)!

Do you find it makes you irrationally angry? It does me, which is an effect I don't want.

HopeAndDriftWood · 23/11/2020 17:55

I didn’t lose weight and it didn’t affect my tastebuds. But I did get the anger and so I came off it, I really didn’t like that.

WishIWasSomewhereElse · 23/11/2020 18:04

@HopeAndDriftWood that's what I've got. It's supposed to be a mood stabiliser, but it tends to make mine worse (I have bipolar but take it for migraines, it doesn't work for them anymore). I haven't lost weight either.

70sduvet · 23/11/2020 21:42

Yes!!! I thought i was going crazy. I keep mentioning this to Drs and Dr friends and it's like I'm mad.
However, I think it is down to aspartame. Not all fizzy drinks.
I curse Jamie Oliver and his sugar tax.
If I can get a posh brand of drink (I hate coke) or full sugar squash it's grand. If it has aspartame I feel like the lining is coming off my cheeks.
I also feel like I can taste it as metal in sauces or dressings so just avoid it completely

Here is a medical study on this

Hi, I was interested to find this thread.

I've been on Topiramate for migraine for quite a few years, 25mg morning and 50mg evening.

It's done wonders for my migraine. I haven't noticed the drinks thing but I don't much like sweet drinks anyway. Also I have always found sweeteners taste bitter and disgusting so avoid them.

However, I have been having dreadful problems with food smells making me feel sick - has anyone else had this? In my case there could be other reasons for this but I am now wondering if the Topiramate could be to blame?

Cloud21 · 24/11/2020 12:21

Yep.....everything tastes of dried blood....VILE Sad
