A good board game for an 8yo boy?

I've signed up for a Christmas gift for children in care programme. I've got an 8yo boy who would like a board game - any recommendations? Thanks for any ideas!

Not a board game, a card game, Dobble is super fun

MustardMitt · 20/11/2020 18:24

Wembley is a big hit with my boys.

Also The Sock Game - not a board game as such.

Cluedo, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne (not a board game, strictly speaking).

My ds likes battleships, I'm not sure if that counts, and Cluedo.

That is a lovely thing to do OP! Flowers

Labyrinth is popular with my 8 year old and lots of his friends!

Bigpizzalover · 20/11/2020 18:57

Mine 7 year old likes risk junior, operation (kind of a board game) monopoly, snakes and ladders, again not a board game but kerplunk. He also likes a game of dominoes

Carcasone

Yes, we love Labyrinth too.
Bobbi73 · 20/11/2020 19:02

Mine love cluedo, game of life, labyrinth and ludo. They love Dobble and Uno too but they aren't board games. Lovely thing to do 😀

Ninbuscl · 20/11/2020 19:04

We like Scotland Yard

MojoJojo71 · 20/11/2020 19:08

8 year old DD loves Cluedo and a ticket to ride (kids version but actually she’s found it easy so she’d probably be ok with the full version). She’s getting Labyrinth and Catan junior for Christmas

Roselilly36 · 20/11/2020 19:09

My DS loved PayDay at that age.

Hobbes8 · 20/11/2020 19:09

Would cards against humanity family edition be inappropriate? Lots of fart jokes basically.

LER83 · 20/11/2020 19:22

Mine love game of life, beat the parents, monopoly and junior cluedo. Have got ticket to ride but have yet to play it!

Nohomemadecandles · 20/11/2020 19:26

What a lovely idea.
Monopoly / Junior Monopoly
Ludo type

1starwars2 · 20/11/2020 19:46

Frustration, connect 4? Or Cluedo. We had a kids version where you had to work out who had eaten the cake, rather than a murder...

ForestDad · 20/11/2020 20:27

If it's for a family situation you don't know then consider how likely it is that the family will play together. We love board games in our house but not everyone does. My 8yr old boy is into risk, adult monopoly and chess now but we didn't start with these.
I'd get something simple that can be played by 2 players like connect 4, kerplunk or downfall.

BessSedgwick · 20/11/2020 21:24

Wow, thanks so much! So many great ideas! I may have to get more than one.

Thanks, ForestDad: that's a really sensitive point I hadn't thought of.

Happy early Christmas to you all!

ThinkFun has lots of ‘board games’ that are one player only but you can play it with others.
