Can tv get any lower? Just find this show so vulgar. Don't get me wrong, I'm all up for pushing the boundaries..:but this? I can't think of anything less attractive..
Who are these people that sign up to come on the show??? Totally baffled.

I've only seen the odd clip on Gogglebox so id say the best way to watch it is with the commentary from Giles and Mary (they kill me).

Moonmelodies · 20/11/2020 07:45

Surely it would make more sense to judge the male participants in an erect condition.

DoTheNextRightThing · 20/11/2020 07:46

I love it. It's great fun. And honestly, I think it's a good thing, on the whole. It makes the naked body less taboo. It shows us that everyone has different body types. And allows us to see genitals and say "oh, mine looks like that too" so you don’t feel so self conscious about your own. A lot of people who have been on the show say it has given them a big confidence boost. Yeah maybe it is a bit crass, but I think it has done wonders for body positivity.

There other ways to educate yourself on body parts. I'm sure you came across porn or you can go to a nude beach. This show by no mean boosts the confidence of the nation.

Oh yes because we all know how well porn represents average bodies Hmm. And I’m pretty sure it’s frowned upon to go to a nudist beach to inspect naked people!

StarlightLady · 20/11/2020 08:41

@BooFuckingHoo2 - So true, eactly that Flowers.

People do not want to be oggled on beaches.

This is one of the few things on any form of media that puts women on equal footing with men, unlike a lot of porn, it demonstrates non-perfect real bodies we can relate to and has a lesbian woman as compare. Maybe the criticism would be less if it was presented by a straight man!

The show depicts a range of ages, ethnicities, people overweight, people underweight, the young and those older.

StarlightLady · 20/11/2020 08:45

@thinonice - Please don’t suggest porn as a way to educate. It has fed so many wrong ideas into young males.

Lollypop701 · 20/11/2020 08:47

I’m happily married ... or would (not really) consider taking my 1970’s throwback bush for a viewing! Obviously I would shampoo and condition it first, might consider shaping a little and maybe some light glitter (suitable for the area!) . Ah well 😂

Mydogisagentleman · 20/11/2020 08:49

I have 2 male friends , one of them has already appeared, the other filmed his a couple of months ago and will appear in February. No fees involved but a night in a hotel In Manchester.
One was picked and is in an ongoing relationship with the man who chose him, the other used it as a shagathon in canal street

RosesforMama · 20/11/2020 08:50

I hate this programme. It is everything shallow - choosing a date based not on their personality in any way but only on your judgement of their body - and as one of the ten percent of perfectly nice normal women who have lipoedema (fat gathering on legs) I also find it discriminatory. I remember the revelation I felt at age 17 when a very nice guy I was friends with, and to whom I was bemoaning the idea that anyone would ever fancy me, told me that "you really don't have sex with a body; you have sex with a person". This programme goes totally against that.

GreyishDays · 20/11/2020 08:52
@Spanielmadness what's wrong with vagina over Vulva? I haven't heard anyone use the word vulva before have i been misusing terms ? X
@hoolahoopss The vagina is just the inside, the actual canal. So you can’t see that from the outside. The bit where hair grows is the vulva. Then you have flaps, inner and outer which are labia.

DisorganisedPurpose · 20/11/2020 08:59

See, I don't think they are showing the vulva but the mons pubis. The vulva is the opening between the legs. You don't really get a good view of that. I was surprised when Sue Perkins called it a vulva.

honeylulu · 20/11/2020 09:26

From wikipedia:

Thevulva(plural: vulvas or vulvae; derived from Latin for wrapper or covering) consists of the externalfemale sex organs. The vulva includes themons pubis(or mons veneris),labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, vestibular bulbs, vulval vestibule, urinary meatus, thevaginal opening, hymen, andBartholin'sandSkene'svestibularglands. The urinary meatus is also included as it opens into the vulval vestibule

So "vulva" includes the mons pubis and labia (the parts you can see from the front when standing). It also includes the vaginal opening (but not the complete vagina) although you would only see that part if the contestant was lying down legs akimbo to the camera. So the presenter repeatedly referring to "vagina" is completely incorrect. Vulva would certainly be the appropriate definition.

It baffles me as this is a programme that holds itself out as cool, modern, no holds barred, "let's call a spade a spade" and yet can't get the terminology right.

I know women like that in real life, talking about "getting my vagina waxed" (er no dear you don't have any hair inside your vagina) but "can't" use the word vulva because "it's awful, it makes me cringe". As I say, baffled. Just, why? If you're giving someone a close up view of your flaps, why be so coy about a completely correct word?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/11/2020 09:54

A lot of people who have been on the show say it has given them a big confidence boost. Yeah maybe it is a bit crass, but I think it has done wonders for body positivity.

It's got to be more appropriate than streaking at Wimbledon.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/11/2020 09:59

I don't know if it makes a difference at all in perceptions, but Anna is bisexual rather than a lesbian - I think they deliberately chose her partly with that in mind, figuring that she would be able to empathise with everybody's perspectives, whichever sex they were and whichever sex they were seeking (although at least one chooser had a mixture of men and women in the boxes).

Circusoflove · 20/11/2020 10:01

They all look better with their clothes on that’s for sure.

Just proves that context is everything when it comes to nudity.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/11/2020 10:05

It does seem quite dismissive of female anatomy, suggesting that it doesn't matter using wrong terminology as 'everybody knows what you mean'. Clearly, being able to see somebody's vulva is a very different matter from her having her vagina on display.

They would never remotely dream of discussing whether a male contestant had circumcised/uncircumcised testicles and, if challenged, just say "Um, well, they're all just his genitals and you know what we mean".

Fizbosshoes · 20/11/2020 10:16

I'm another one baffled why anyone wants to go on it. Like pp say the embarrassment of potentially friends/neighbours/family/work colleagues seeing everything....Confused ....and yes the concept of choosing a date solely based on the appearance of their privates seems pretty bizarre in my opinion.
I admit that we watched it once it was on after first dates and we literally left it on out of morbid fascination. I certainly dont make a habit of tuning in and we watch gogglebox with teenage kids so we pause and ff anything like that.

I think the same about embarrassing bodies. If you're too embarrassed to go to the GP or nurse (ie a small room containing one other person) ....why on earth would you want to show your problem to a GP, presenter, camera crew....and thousands of tv viewers some of whom you may know...?? What if your own gp was watching....they might wonder why you went to the bother of applying , auditioning (the mind boggles..!) Filming etc when you could simply have picked up the phone and made an appointment!

NoTimeToDiet · 20/11/2020 10:22

Thanks for that honey. Very informative! OT but does anyone remember Labour suggesting female only train carriages? We could have had vulval vestibules Grin

tectonicplates · 20/11/2020 10:25

With Embarrassing Bodies, I get the impression some of them went to their GPs already but they wouldn't listen, or it was one of those things they'd asked several doctors about but nobody would take it seriously. Some of the treatment they get must surely be private treatment rather than NHS, and I wonder if the programme pays for it.

TomblibooEeesTrousers · 20/11/2020 10:31

I always wonder if anyone has seen someone they know in real life on there. Always say to DH imagine if the screen lifted and plain old bob from the office was behind it 😱😱

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/11/2020 10:40

Embarrassing Bodies

My favourite ever EB was one where a bloke was having concerns about recurring discomfort inside his bum crack. Dr Christian examined his crinkly derriere to diagnose and gave him the brilliantly diplomatic 'prescription' that he should 'revisit his wiping technique' Grin

The embarrassment factor for that (if people you knew saw it) would be off the scale! It's slightly different if it's something you have no control over (although showing your bum on tv is always going to have a pretty high embarrassment factor, whatever the reason!)

draughtycatflap · 20/11/2020 10:48

I never watch it but did catch a glimpse through a window once as I travelled past on a train. “I shouted Mother! Look at the peni!” She’s old and half blind but I received a slap round the face for being ungrammatical. I couldn’t help myself and had some very strange stirrings ‘down there’ for the rest of the trip. It was London to Glasgow too so quite the adventure!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/11/2020 10:48

There was a clip on Gogglebox where one of the Naked Attraction contestants held her labia apart so the camera could zoom in on her clitoris.

She was the one who ended up being chosen by the man who was a virgin. They went on the date to the restaurant and she immediately started asking this man who had yet to experience the most basic of vanilla sex whether he was into things like gimp masks - and she brought him one as a present when they met again On The Sofa! Maybe they find the idea of a box of chocolates or a nice bottle of wine a bit boring in Australia Grin
