Mattress for an Ikea Kura bed which isn’t foam?

This bed is so popular that I would have thought there were loads of mattresses but I’m struggling to find what I’m looking for. It has to be the European single size (90 x 200cm) and thinner than usual so as not to position the child too near he top of the frame. I have a foam mattress for my eldest and it is awful because he’s always boiling hot. My youngest is just like his dad and gets sweaty very easily so there’s no way a foam mattress will work. I thought I’d found one on the happybeds site but they have absolutely awful reviews on trustpilot so won’t be buying from there. Any other ideas?

We had a spring mattress from ikea- it was a thinner one in order to give the depth from the rail. It wasn't ideal though, as it was the "extender" type that go with the metal extending beds (litten? Maybe?)
Now DS is bigger, and needs a proper sprung mattress (because when they get heavier, the springs become uncomfortable!) we have flipped the bed so it's low side down.
(Didn't do this until age 11 btw, so if yours is say 5, you have some years to go, but ds is very slight and weighs little. DD is normal weight and I think we switched mattresses around age 9)

Oops- minnen bed, not litten!

I can only find one sprung mattress on the Ikea website and it’s too thick. So frustrating!

What's the maximum depth?

dementedpixie · 19/11/2020 11:02

This is 15cm deep

Thanks, that’s about the right depth but that site also has lots of warning reviews on trustpilot. I have found the jay-be European single mattress on next but it doesn’t have great reviews in terms of comfort on various sites.

We used a sofa bed mattress from
Ikea

It was fine for a few years

Argos has the Jay Be one but may not be in stock in your area

BikeRunSki · 19/11/2020 12:02

IKEA have several sprung mattresses in their European Single size here

Supertree · 19/11/2020 12:47

The jay-be says it is in stock at next but I’m a bit concerned about comfort. The Argos reviews on the standard sized single one in terms of comfort aren’t the best. Just had a look at the Ikea link and I’m not sure whether I am seeing different mattresses available? The only one I can see which is European single and sprung is the hovag which is too deep. I’ve had a look on wayfair but will look again. Didn’t think it would be this awkward tbh. Thanks everybody for your help anyway, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out :)

Hi @Supertree, did you find a good mattress for the Kura bed in the end? I am searching for the same thing, because my dd has her heart set on the Kura, but wants a pocket sprung mattress, which is not easy to find at the right depth and length.

Hi, I went for this one in the end in European single size. It is pocket sprung but does still have a layer of memory foam over it. This hasn’t caused any problems and it is definitely cooler and more comfortable than the pure foam my eldest child had. The main issue is that it isn’t a shallow depth one. I just couldn’t find exactly what I wanted in the end, so had to compromise. He lies closer to the top of the frame than I would like but it hasn’t been a problem so far.

Hi @Supertree, thank you for your response and the link, I will have a good look at this one.

Avoid memory foam or any foam on your mattress, especially if you are beginning the menopause. Nothing makes you sweat like a foam mattress. Worst invention ever.
