Giving a 5 year old an iphone?!

Mum2threee · 18/11/2020 11:10

Today on my Facebook newsfeed a friend of a friend was asking for opinions on whether it was ok to give her 5 year old son (soon to be 6) her iPhone xs when she upgrades.

Each to their own of course but am I alone in thinking this is absolutely bonkers?

Is this really the norm now, to be giving such small children mobile phones?

I saw this post - it's just by some dense juice plus rep isn't it? I wouldn't give it a lot of head space really

Indeed, its the same person.

I just can't grasp how ridiculous some people can be. An iPhone at 5, Christ.

I'm genuinely curious as to how many parents do this.

I wouldn't give a phone but DS has a tablet with age appropriate apps and games. Maybe they've taken the sim out, deleted internet browser etc, and are just using it as a tablet. It's just technology, as long as they set it up carefully I can't see anything terrible with re-purposeing something you are no longer using.

I wouldn't give it to them with a sim in, but for using basically as a tablet, sure. In fact my 7 year old has his tablet, but recently nabbed an old iphone just for music and audio books.

My kids have had tablets of their own since the youngest was 2 (frequent travel back then).

I'd say it's commonplace, nearly every toddler out and about I see out and about is clutching a phone or tablet.
The woman behind me in the supermarket queue the other day was blasting out nursery rhymes to a tiny baby in a car seat.

I think a lot of people do give their child a phone without a sim card in now to be honest

Not me but I think a lot of people do
