Sliver of Metal stuck stuck through nail

What do you think I should do? A small piece of metal has gone right through my nail. I’ve tried removing it with tweezers but every time I touch it the pain is really bad. Is it worth bothering the gp? I can’t imagine having it removed - it feels a lot worse than it looks and it’s properly jammed in there.

Yes do go to the GP. It must be painful and You wouldn't want to get an infection. It is metal in your skin. A GP is best. Poor you - hope you are able to sleep tonight and get help soon.

I would get it taken out, they will numb it first.

TheOrigRights · 17/11/2020 21:40

Ouch. How did you do that?!
I imagine a nurse will have just the tiny instruments to get it out.

Have you tried soaking your hand in warm water?

Definitely a GP job. Ouch!

Thank you for you replies. I’ve got no idea how I did it which makes it more annoying! I just woke up last night with my finger throbbing. I’ve tried ignoring it but I keeps catching it on things.

You could try magnesium sulphate paste? Bing it on and wrap it up for the day. You can get it from the pharmacy.

TheMoonIsRising · 17/11/2020 22:21

Thankyou- definitely worth trying!

That has made my tummy go all funny! I second the paste , hope you get it sorted

I don't know if your GP will be able to help. I'd probably go to minor injuries for that, they can numb it with an anaesthetic injection at the base of your finger first if its painful. You might need antibiotics/tetanus if you don't know how you did it. I don't think I'd leave it a few days either. Hope you get it sorted.

goingtotown · 17/11/2020 23:42

A dollop of magnesium paste on a plaster will draw it out.

BlackeyedSusan · 18/11/2020 02:20

Soak in as hot as you can manage salt water first. 1 teaspoon to a pint.

I agree with gp. A few years ago I trapped my finger in the car door and damaged the nail. It came half off, but not fully. I ignored it for a couple of weeks but it then started to get infected. Went to gp who numbed the finger and removed the nail and dressed it, plus antibiotics for infection. Defiinitely get it sorted asap as an infection in your nail bed is not fun!
