Cinema or Cinemar - yes, it's a pronunciation one!

I say cinema with a hard 'a' as in c /a / t

But listening to the radio, someone pronounced it 'cinemar' as in ' ar' at the end.

So what do you say?

(I have more Grin )

FourEyesGood · 17/11/2020 18:06

Sinna-muh (very short ‘muh’ sound)

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/11/2020 18:09

mar at the end but that's my accent (geordie)

minipie · 17/11/2020 18:09

Cinemar here.

jambeforeclottedcream · 17/11/2020 18:15

Sin-a-mar

chomalungma · 17/11/2020 18:18

Ok

So I heard another one - on Radio 4

whopooedinthepyrex · 17/11/2020 18:24

Damn you @WinWinnieTheWay

You beat me to it Grin

FallonsTearoom · 17/11/2020 18:25

Cinemah

garlictwist · 17/11/2020 18:26

I say "cinemAH"

I think people who say "cinemAR" are probably a bit posher/from down south

purrswhileheeats · 17/11/2020 18:30

Envelope or onvelope?

theThreeofWeevils · 17/11/2020 18:36

kinema!

Rae34 · 17/11/2020 18:38

I agree cinem-ahr is down South.

I am from Glasgow and say 'Sin-i-muh'

Rae34 · 17/11/2020 18:39

@WinWinnieTheWay where are you from?

Itstheprinciple · 17/11/2020 18:46

I was coming on to say 'The Pictures' too.

My DD looks at me like Confused

Mashingthecompost · 17/11/2020 18:55

@CeeceeBloomingdale ooh interesting, I'm from NE and lived in Newc for a bit but didn't think Geordies would say long ar at the end. I say it short. (I'm a Smoggy in South Yorks though, what do I know?!)

Mumtumwobble · 17/11/2020 19:06

Cinema, but usually the pictures.

Craftycorvid · 17/11/2020 19:06

Definitely sinn-em-ah, but I’m from dain saith (all right, the south west).

The one that really grates on me is ‘drawer-ing’ instead of ‘drawing’ - or conversely, saying a ‘draw’ instead of ‘drawer’ as in ‘chest of draws’ what?! Confused

doctorhamster · 17/11/2020 19:09

Sin-a-mar

I'm welsh but have lived in the Midlands for many years now.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 17/11/2020 19:17

The pictures!

0blio · 17/11/2020 19:23

Cinema with emphasis on first syllable. I'm Scottish so definitely wouldn't pronounce it cinemar Grin

My bugbear is when tv presenters (mostly on Homes under the Hammer) say comm-YOU-nal instead of COMM-unal - but my pronunciation could be a Scots thing too.

WinWinnieTheWay · 17/11/2020 20:00

@Rae34 Lancashire

chomalungma · 17/11/2020 20:05

I have a Northern background - so probably explains cinema.
