Christmas food

Has anyone ordered their Christmas food yet? As in turkey etc rather than online shopping. I keep dithering about ordering mine as I'm not sure if we are going to be allowed to have family here or not. If we are allowed we could have up to 14 here but if not it could just be DH and myself.

All my stuff is online. I’ve got the gammon and pork, some chocolate cheeselets which are my pleasure at Christmas.

We were told if lock down is lifted on the 2nd, we'd go back to the tier system. Even in Tier 1, the lowest, you are only allowed groups of upto 6.

DramaLlama12 · 17/11/2020 17:14

@ifailed
Would that be local council tier system or would that be that businesses would be tiered . ? Like , pubs reopening last ,
I’m only catering for the household , I’m not planning on seeing anyone at Christmas other than who I live with
I’ve got a turkey just for us

You won't be allowed 14 for Christmas!

Ifailed · 17/11/2020 17:18

@DramaLlama12, I'm referring to the English tiers, as we had before Nov 5th:

I’ve had my turkey since September. Now starting to buy and freeze sausages, stuffing, etc. You won’t be allowed to have 14 under any circumstances so I’d plan for a majority of 6.

AlwaysLatte · 17/11/2020 17:22

I'm just emptying the freezer so I can have some meals from it over Christmas - I'll order the usual fresh turkey but also have a couple of small crowns and some lobster, gammon etc for the freezer. If we are limited to 6 then we'll have to do it in stages and have different meals - or if we can have more people I can just add to things from the freezer. We might end up with lots of food afterwards but we'll certainly use it ourselves if necessary!

Originalyellowbelly · 17/11/2020 17:48

I didn't think 14 would be allowed Sad but could always hope! I think I will order for 6 and be thankful it's not just me and DH who will sleep through most of it.

Thanks for the heads up about M&S being sold out of some things, I'm putting my order in right away.

I was going to mention this as well. Even if lockdown lifts, there’s no way they’re going to let people gather beyond 6 or 10 people anyway. I’d plan for 6 people max and buy multiple main courses/roasts to flexibly accommodate more people like @AlwaysLatte is doing.
VenusClapTrap · 17/11/2020 17:51

We’ve created a family tradition of doing our Christmas food shop on Christmas Eve. It keeps things exciting - we never know what we’re having till last minute.

We don’t have turkey though, so there’s no pressure there.

StripyTigerTail · 17/11/2020 17:56

We are expecting to be able to have one extra person, so we will be five. Fingers crossed! We normally get our stuff locally and it doesn't really need to be ordered in advance, as we don't have that many... Could you get something frozen / not frozen and freeze it and keep it frozen if you don't get the numbers you're expecting?

Originalyellowbelly · 17/11/2020 18:17

I have ordered a turkey crown, a dessert and a pie, the rest I will order from local shops and my online shop, as long as I've got the basics it will be fine. I know there will definitely be 6 of us, just sad I wont see the rest of my family but I know I should be thankful, and I am, that we will still have some family here.

I ordered mine a month ago (had to to secure slot), but everything is changeable.

I never do turkey as I am American and Christmas is just too close to Thanksgiving to repeat turkey. I am doing a Beef Wellington so have ordered a whole fillet. It will only be 4 of us, so I will make 2 large ones with the trimming of the fillet going to the dog.

DH is French so oysters, langoustines, and foie gras are ordered from the fishmonger and the butcher. We'll have enough foie gras to last until NYE as I order a whole liver and make my own.

We have family abroad on both sides so it will be a normal family Christmas at home for us.

Raindropsonrosesand · 17/11/2020 18:44

I'm planning to order 2 meats in smaller quantities (a large chicken and a ham). So if we are back in tier 1 and MIL and FIL can join us then we'll do both on Christmas day, but if it's just the 3 of us then we'll cook them on different days. Keeping fingers crossed that they will be able to come!

willowywillow · 17/11/2020 18:51

We've already started eating it!Grin

Had mince pies, cherry liqueur chocolates, lebkucken, stollen, box of luxury chocolate biscuits, Quality Street, chocolate rum marzipan and box of chocolates. Smile

Regarding food we just go shopping every week. We don't get turkey for Xmas just a nice joint of beef or lamb. Never had a problem yet.

Sometimes seasonal foods are marked as sold out because they're not ready to be shipped, so do go back and check nearer to Christmas.
Originalyellowbelly · 17/11/2020 20:01

aModernClassic thanks, I will do, although I think I've got most of it covered now, gammon, pigs in blankets, sausage, bacon, stuffing etc ordered from butchers but I will keep checking for another dessert and anything else I fancy.
