WWYD? iPhone edition

So DS(13) has been wanting an iPhone for ages. Hehas proven himself responsible enough to keep his cheap Motorola phone in reasonably good condition for the past 2 years--was considering an upgrade for his Christmas gift this year. Obviously the higher end ones are completely out of budget, but would be willing to go up to £300ish, which puts us in the market for a decent refurbished 7 or 8 , I think.

DH is exceptionally frugal. We're a PAYG family without any phone contracts between the three of us, so would be looking for an unlocked, sim-free option.

I know the newest SE is decently priced, for a new iPhone at least, but still a bit more than I'd like to spend. Would I be crazy to get an old 7 or 8 now??
Are they something that will be too outdated in a year's time?

An 8 would be a good option. I'd look at a really cheap contract. It's probably cheaper than pay as you go.

I would wait until Black Friday as you will probably get a good deal then on an older model phone.

Still not sure even a cheap contract would be of good value to us.
At the moment we pay £10/month for him to have 12gb and unlimited mins a month which he never comes anywhere close to using. Contracts for this amount of data seem to run upwards of at least twice as much per month. Like I said, DH, is cheap... ;)

My nieces both have iPhones but never the newest ones. My brother buys either a reconditioned one or from a FB who's upgrading. They're both perfectly happy with them. I think its an 8 one of them is getting this year with a £7.50 a month contract. I've got their SIM cards on my contract so i can gift them data so they're basically getting unlimited data for the £7.50

The iPhone 6 is no longer being supported this year so Sep 2021, the 7 will no longer be supported and the 8 from 2022. It’s worth keeping in mind the resale value of an SE and that you’d get more money back if you sold it.

BanningTheWordNaice · 15/11/2020 19:54

Sorry forgot about the 6S so will be 2022 for the 7 and 2023 for the 8.

Ah, thanks Banning. Was curious about the timeline of support. And resale values are a good point. I was thinking of investing in a refurbi 7 or 8, just to get him "on the ladder" so to speak, so he could put its trade-in value towards something nicer and newer when the time was right.
