Does anyone know anything about Rum? Really good rum?

My db was telling about rum I wasn't really paying attention which sounds awful but I was also helping my dad with his Sainsbury's order!

Anyway, he was telling me he only likes Jamaican or Bajan rum because they don't blah blah single something (cask?) so it's authentically rum or something..anyway apparently his favourite Mount Gay black barrel has changed so I wanted to try and get him something he might like.

He doesn't like spiced rum, I'm looking for something that is either Bajan or Jamaican that isn't your regular supermarket rum. Something different something that's special.

Any rum connoisseurs out there that can help please?

I'm not sure if it's available all over the uk but have you looked at Dead Mans Fingers? They do a whole range of flavours.

Thank you! I've had a look but it's spiced rums so it's a no go. Thank you though!

How about Appleton's or Wray and Nephew. Both are Jamaican rum's I believe.

TartanDMs · 15/11/2020 12:20

Have a look on Master of Malt - they do tasting notes and an explanation of where each rum is from.

I've started a 'rum tasting pack' but every sample I'm choosing the rum has been discontinued so I'm buggered if he likes any of them!

2 favourite distilleries from me....Foursquare & Doorly’s.
Doorly’s XO highly recommended! 👍 🥃

I love rum... but do you know what he doesn’t like about Black Barrel? If it’s the new casks that Mount Gay are using, he might not like any of their current range.

Anyway if he likes Jamaican rum, my recommendation would be the limited edition Plantation Jamaican rum. It’s the closest to actual Jamaican rum that I’ve ever managed to get in the U.K. - someone bought it for us as a wedding present.

danio01 · 15/11/2020 12:36

7year old Havana Club. The best rum I have tried.

I think it is the new casks, he was having a proper moan and I sort of switched off. I sound like an awful sister..I love him really Grin

Zacapa rums are good quality. You can sometimes get it in Costco

PurBal · 15/11/2020 13:06

If I was looking to buy rum for a connoisseur I would go with Angostura House which is Trinibagonian. So in that sense it doesn't fulfill the brief but they also use bourbon casks and it is a hidden gem. Angostura 1787 (15 year old) is about £60.

Completely agree.
MrsKingfisher · 15/11/2020 13:21

So I have found out he likes traditional rum made in the traditional way with no adding of sugars or flavours.

He tried some of the Foursquare Doorlys but wasn't keen. I have no idea what made Mount Gay so special but guess I need something close to that.

Havana Club Especial is my go to.

RJnomore1 · 15/11/2020 14:53

I am no help on this thread because I’ve never met a rum I don’t like.

perfectstorm · 15/11/2020 17:57

How about Mount Gay Extra Old? I mean, presumably it's too old to have changed, if the production changes are recent (this may be pure ignorance on my part, though - rum is not my drink!)

www.masterofmalt.com/rum/mount-gay-extra-old-rum/

I like Havana Club for making Christmas cakes, and that's about it. And that's a lot sweeter than Mount Gay, which is why I like it for that purpose.

perfectstorm · 15/11/2020 17:58

I've been told that using Havana Club to bake with is sacrilege, so apologies to anyone who feels similarly - in my defence, it's a really nice cake recipe!

The extra old has now changed to triple cask so no longer tastes the same apparently. Havana club adds flavourings some not the traditional rum he likes 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don't like rum at all so I'd happily bake with it or tip it down the sink Confused
