Would you return a lost wallet?

DH lost his wallet yesterday with a good amount of cash in it. Pretty certain it was whole we were at the playground - but have since retraced our steps, called all the stores we'd been too yesterday or near where we were, and posted on the community FB group.

I guess I shouldn't be, but I'm really surprised that no one's turned it in or dropped it back at our house (playground is around the corner and his license is in there with our address). If I'd found a wallet I'd absolutely try to return it to its owner and imagine I'd drive even a reasonable distance to if I had the address from the license.

So just made me wonder, what others would do? Would you return it? Leave it where it was? Take the cash? Take the whole wallet?

I would return the wallet. I have returned a wallet stuffed with £200. The chap turned up with the biggest bunch of flowers I have ever had. This is how the world should work.

vampirethriller · 15/11/2020 11:14

I'd return it. I once left my handbag on a night bus and someone handed it in complete with my purse phone and cash. So I would do the same.

AlwaysLatte · 15/11/2020 11:15

I have always handed things like that in - found a wallet, a purse and a mobile phone and on each occasion the owner was so grateful. Hope it turns up!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 15/11/2020 11:15

If it had an address in it, I'd return it (assuming it's local not 'away from home').

But at the same time. I would be massively surprised to get it back myself

Having said that though, my friend list hers while iut, retraced her steps etc. No sign if it. She got it back a couple of weeks later, it had been knocked under the counter in a shop and they found it when they were rearranging things.

Does he have anything sentimental in there?

planningaheadtoday · 15/11/2020 11:15

Yes, always .

MalteserGeezee · 15/11/2020 11:17

I would absolutely 100% return it (or if impractical to do that in person, mail it back or give to police etc). I really couldn't contemplate not doing so. I'd really question the character of a friend/partner/family member that chose not to or kept the cash out the wallet. I hope it's returned to you soon, with all contents intact.

DillonPanthersTexas · 15/11/2020 11:17

I have handed a wallet I found on the train into the ticket office. Sadly when I lost my wallet on the train I never saw it again. There are sadly lots of people out there with a finders keepers mentality, the same people who would not point out an incorrect bill in a restaurant if meant they could pay less.

Mylittlesandwich · 15/11/2020 11:17

Personally I would. If there was an address I'd go there if not quite a few get posted on our local Facebook page along with bank cards etc. I once lost a purse. We were skint at the time and it had every penny I had in the world in it, I was devastated.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 15/11/2020 11:17

I'd hand it in/find owner if address available/ drop it at police station.

Trixie18 · 15/11/2020 11:18

I'd return it intact. Someone returned my lost purse once. It had had practically every penny I had in it at the time, I was so grateful.

ancientgran · 15/11/2020 11:18

I'd return it but sometimes it makes you wonder about people. We were shopping one day when DH saw someone drop a large brown envelope. He is disabled and shuffled after the man calling, "I think you dropped something." Man said something rude and walked off. DH looked in the envelope which was stuffed with £20 and £50 notes, must have been well in 4 figures.

DH stood there holding the envelope wondering what to do and man came running back, snatched the envelope and said, "That's mine." and walked off.

So I would but I would hope whoever the wallet belonged to would at least say thank you.

CoffeeCheeseandCupcakes · 15/11/2020 11:20

Maybe we're being impatient and it will turn up some how still 🤞🏻

Nothing sentimental - though it's a nice wallet I'd bought him our first Christmas, so sort of @WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants! Also just wouldn't mind the few hundred pounds that's in there back...

I found a empty wallet on the way home from school. We took it to their address and got a mouthful for stealing the money out of it... it was empty when found and I was trying to do a kind thing and just got grief for it.

Would still do it again though

AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/11/2020 11:21

I would return it without a doubt, I'm sorry they haven't.

Herja · 15/11/2020 11:21

I would and I have a few times. I know more people that wouldn't than would though...

I was sort of expecting that, to be honest, as we retraced our steps. I thought we'd find it thrown in a bush or something with the cash gone

DD lost her wallet and the person who found it looked her up on FB and sent her a message. The person then travelled to the nearest large town to meet DD to hand her wallet back.

Some people are just lovely and it always shocks me when others aren’t.

stillsomewhatsheldonesque · 15/11/2020 11:23

I would (and have several times) hand it in to the police station.

My purse came back to me minus the money but I got my sentimental bits back so I was grateful for that.

NoGoodPunsLeft · 15/11/2020 11:23

I would definitely, I've lost a purse before & it was such a pain cancelling & replaying everything.

A woman posted on local Facebook group she lost hers with £200 in it, I always wonder why do people carry so much cash! It seems so foolish

FatCatThinCat · 15/11/2020 11:23

I'd try my best to reunite it with its owner. Have done in the past and have also had mine returned to me. I dropped mine on the street as I got out of my car. A passerby found it and knocked on the door to see if it were mine. I was extremely grateful.

theotherfossilsister · 15/11/2020 11:23

I'd hand it in to police, or if found in school playground then probably to reception

stevalnamechanger · 15/11/2020 11:24

Of course !

I don't know how someone could sleep at night ... I certainly couldn't

nettytree · 15/11/2020 11:25

Yes. I used to work in an airport and have given many things to lost property. Passports, etc. I have even found over 3000 euros.

FlouncerInDenial · 15/11/2020 11:26

My DH has lost wallets twice and didn't get back either time.

I once dropped my purse and it got handed in intact to a police station. I had actually managed to drop it immediately outside the police station building, though (so they probablythought it was a set up). I wrote to the hander-inner thanking them and sent them a tenner for their trouble.

Spied · 15/11/2020 11:27

I'd be worried about being accused of stealing the cash if it's empty but I still would return it and have the couple of times I've found wallet and license/ID/small change.
