Would you return a lost wallet?

DH lost his wallet yesterday with a good amount of cash in it. Pretty certain it was whole we were at the playground - but have since retraced our steps, called all the stores we'd been too yesterday or near where we were, and posted on the community FB group.

I guess I shouldn't be, but I'm really surprised that no one's turned it in or dropped it back at our house (playground is around the corner and his license is in there with our address). If I'd found a wallet I'd absolutely try to return it to its owner and imagine I'd drive even a reasonable distance to if I had the address from the license.

So just made me wonder, what others would do? Would you return it? Leave it where it was? Take the cash? Take the whole wallet?

I would for sure. I don't understand why people would keep it?

Actually I do but it is at the misfortune of others

Sexnotgender · 15/11/2020 12:40

Absolutely, I have and would return it.

Fizbosshoes · 15/11/2020 12:43

I would think/hope that majority of people would return a purse or wallet ,(although I cant imagine anyone on here confessing they would keep it!)
It's actually quite sad that often the default thought is a worse case scenario when in fact the majority of people are honest. Once at a busy tube station, DD got separated from us. Both me and DH were frantic that something bad could happen but actually after a few min she was found , a man had seen what happened and stayed with her until we got back to her.

I'd take it to the house if nearby and there was an address in the wallet. I wouldn't ask any questions if mine was returned missing cash as I'd just be grateful not to have to replace the cards. I wouldn't know if the cash was already gone when the person returning it picked it up anyway.

Jonjo00 · 15/11/2020 12:47

Return it if it had a address or hand it into police station would like to think people would do the same if it was mine lost

mscongeniality · 15/11/2020 12:54

This might be a bit outing but last year while pregnant and tired I realised I dropped my expensive handbag somewhere in IKEA. Inside was a really nice purse with all my cards. I was in a state and couldn't begin to rememebr where I could have left it in the massive IKEA. DH and I went inside and found a staff member who started contacting the different departments. On her last call she said someone had turned it in, completely intact with everything inside. I was so so happy and grateful and it renewed my faith in humanity.
And yes I would definitely always hand something in, have done always.

Does he have Facebook? If so, I would advise him to regularly check “message requests”, where people who don’t know him will message. A friend of mine lost her wallet, got messages this way but didn’t see them because they don’t pop up on FB

grapewine · 15/11/2020 12:59

Wouldn't go round anyone's house but I'd hand it in at a police station or a shop.

lifestooshort123 · 15/11/2020 13:01

Surely only the honest mumsnetters are on this thread. The dishonest ones aren't likely to come on here and say they wouldn't return it. Hope you get it back.

Milfhunter0 · 15/11/2020 13:02

Great to see so many honest people x

woodhill · 15/11/2020 13:03

Absolutely return it without question or give it in at the police station if you still can

Batmanandbobbin · 15/11/2020 13:04

I dropped my purse outside my car on my drive (I know this for a fact as last had it in my car, on drive) someone stole it and used the contactless payment on CC and DC Ive refused to speak to any of my neighbours for the last 4 year because of this 😂😂

ThousandsAreSailing · 15/11/2020 13:04

I would and have done twice
I also picked up a roll of notes that fell out of a blokes back pocket when I was in the pub and gave them back to him
He bought me and my friends a round of drinks

gypsywater · 15/11/2020 13:05

There really are two types of people in the world, OP.

GeidiPrimes · 15/11/2020 13:07

I would. When I was little, my mother and me found a wallet in a dept store with a similar amount of cash in it. She wanted to keep it, but according to her, I wouldn't stop "tantrumming" until she handed it in. (she does have iffy morals and got nicked for stealing pants once).

londonscalling · 15/11/2020 13:07

Years ago someone I know found a wallet with quite a lot of money in it. It had the owner's name and address in it so he rang the owner (he found his number in the phone book) as he wanted to return it. The guy who'd lost the wallet was quite rude, didn't say thank you and just told him to post the wallet back to him. The finder therefore took all the cash out and sent him back the empty wallet Wink

pinkbalconyrailing · 15/11/2020 13:11

I'd return it or hand it in at a police station or (more likely as closer) a local train station.

give the public transport list and found a call, bear in mind that it takes a week or so to end up at lost&found facilities.

lolabears · 15/11/2020 13:11

I would and have returned things like this in the past. Also shouted after people several times when I'v seen them drop their card or cash.

Brot64 · 15/11/2020 13:12

Of course I would. Also check local bank branches as it can be dropped at one if any of his cards are in there.

I lost mine ages ago in a grocery store and an elderly couple had found it and returned it to the store. I couldn't have been more grateful.

pilates · 15/11/2020 13:12

Yes I would. Hope you get it back.

gcs21 · 15/11/2020 13:14

DP found a wad of £130 on the street last week and he took it to the police station. They accepted it and gave him a receipt and reference number and told him if no one claims it or collects it in 14 days then he can claim it himself.

NoMoreFlowers · 15/11/2020 13:17

I’d return it. I recently found a handbag containing someone’s purse, phone, keys etc but no address. I handed it in at the police station. A few days later I got a lovely letter from the person who’d lost it. She said she’d recently lost her job and couldn’t afford to replace her phone etc. She was so grateful.

ChristopherLillicrap · 15/11/2020 13:17

I found a wallet one Christmas on the floor next to the checkout. I didn't open it but you could see that it was stuffed with cash. The woman behind the checkout remembered the owner and ran after him with it while her supervisor kept an eye on the till.

I've also found wallets on the bus, which I've handed in to the driver. No idea whether the owners got them back.

I'm also grateful to the lovely taxi driver who discovered my DS' phone in the back seat and drove all the way back to our house with it to return it.

Nsky · 15/11/2020 13:19

Why so much money in it?
Someone no doubt enjoying the money

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 15/11/2020 13:23

@nicknamehelp

Try local police my dh was handed in there. Give it a day or 2 as not everyone glued to SM etc or will put through door when passing etc
That's one way to meet a man I suppose!
