Would you return a lost wallet?

DH lost his wallet yesterday with a good amount of cash in it. Pretty certain it was whole we were at the playground - but have since retraced our steps, called all the stores we'd been too yesterday or near where we were, and posted on the community FB group.

I guess I shouldn't be, but I'm really surprised that no one's turned it in or dropped it back at our house (playground is around the corner and his license is in there with our address). If I'd found a wallet I'd absolutely try to return it to its owner and imagine I'd drive even a reasonable distance to if I had the address from the license.

So just made me wonder, what others would do? Would you return it? Leave it where it was? Take the cash? Take the whole wallet?

I would. I recently found a hand bag left on a bench at the park. I checked inside for the owner's business card / drivers license for an address and returned it. The lady sent me a beautiful card and gift in thanks.

Pp mentioned the Police won't take lost and found. I was following someone on a bike. Hung back as approaching a blind bend. Suddenly a load of notes flew out of his back pocket. .Blew my horn stopped and picked some up. Tried to catch him but no luck. Tried local FB , Next Door , couple of local do-gooders who might hav e recognised him but no joy .Spoke to Police who checked missing reports and told me to carry on what I had been doing and after 28 days I could do as I wanted with it. I was surprised they didnt take my details. I gave it to Charity.
OP report the wallet to police

I have returned a wallet with a card in it. The gentleman was very grateful. I one found £30 on the road and picked it up as everyone does and unfortunately there is no way of knowing who that belonged to. When my ds was about 12 he lost a brand new iPhone out of his pocket in a taxi and we only realised when the taxi had driven away. I contacted the taxi company who said they could would contact the driver but it was dependent on when he picked his messages up. I truly thought the phone was gone. Anyway, the driver turned up at our door an hour or 2 later with the phone. It had been kicked under the drivers seat where he had found it. He refused to take any money for the fare and said he was just happy to return it. Most people are honest, I think because it could happen to any one of us and that sick feeling you get when you've lost your phone/purse etc is horrible.

sorryforswearing · 15/11/2020 13:51

Have found wallets on two occasions and have returned them both times. Luckily they were intact when I found them.

Wouldn't be optomistic about getting my purse back if I lost it though.

Thismustbelove · 15/11/2020 13:55

Of course I would return it.

Gwenhines · 15/11/2020 13:58

Yes. I returned a wallet just last week. I actually didn't even look to see if there was money in it or not, I didn't care. Just looked for the licence and then went to the guys house, put it on the step, knocked and stood back til someone answered. He got a rollicking for not taking care of it and I was thanked. Grin

Bvop · 15/11/2020 13:58

100% I would return it. Hope your DH gets it back

NessieMcNessface · 15/11/2020 14:18

I would always hand anything I found to the police or return it myself if I was able. Out of interest, my partner left his wallet on a petrol pump many years ago. It had over £200 in it. We didn’t expect to see it again. By the time we got home as we were out a little while, someone had called at the house and handed it it in. We couldn’t thank the person because they didn’t leave a name or contact number. This was before the advent of social media so although we tried we couldn’t trace the person. However, the chances of having something returned must be partly determined by where you live or where you lost it.

purplecorkheart · 15/11/2020 14:25

Yes, I would always hand it in. I have found many bank cards, wallets etc in my time. Admittedly, I either handed them into a nearby police station or bank branch as they never had home address on them. Likewise when I lost my wallet in University with cash for a deposit in it it was handed into security in the nearby library.

Meepmeeep · 15/11/2020 14:28

Yes, found a designer handbag outside a pub last week and handed it straight to the guy on the door checking is in. I trusted they would deal with it appropriately.

Autumnblooms · 15/11/2020 14:33

If the wallet had substantial amount of money in it I’d take £20 and give the wallet back. If it had less than £100 I’d assume they where as broke as me and return the lot.

RaiderOfTheKitchenCupboard · 15/11/2020 14:43

I would return it, esp if it was as easy as dropping it off at a local address. I’ve returned a few lost keys, etc, to their owners with the help of the local Facebook page.

In the days before mobile phones/internet, my dad left his wallet in a phone box at a motorway service station a couple of hours from home. Someone found it and went to a fair bit of trouble to track my dad down and get it returned to him, all the cash and cards intact. My dad sent him a gift voucher as a thank you and they ended up exchanging Christmas cards for a few years.

Bollss · 15/11/2020 14:48

I would always return it. I once found a phone in the freezer at aldi Grin as I was taking it to the checkout to hand it in there was a man asking if they could keep an eye out for his phone! He was very grateful!

Elderflower14 · 15/11/2020 14:51

Ds2 who's autistic lost his wallet many years ago when out with his support... He was absolutely 😩 My phone number was on his autism awareness card... A lovely man rang me an hour later to say his grandson had picked it up outside the park.
I bought the gs a huge bar of chocolate for ds to give via the gd when we picked wallet up...
Hope you get your DHs wallet back.

AdoraBell · 15/11/2020 14:53

I would return it, or hand into a police station if I couldn’t contact the owner.

Babyroobs · 15/11/2020 14:58

I absolutely would try and track the owner down. Things like drivers license etc are just such a faff and costly to replace, let alone loyalty cards and all that.

Begonias · 15/11/2020 15:01

I was at a shopping centre when an elderly man dropped his wallet. My DD saw the wallet fall out of his pocket and ran after him. He turned around and saw a 10yr old out of breath holding a wallet. He was so grateful, he had just been to the bank to withdraw his pension. He offered DD £5 as a reward. She didn't take it as she said to him my grandad is a similar age to you and I hope someone would do the same for him. I was so proud of her

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 15/11/2020 15:04

I have returned it when it's local to me, handed in to police station if not.

GreysAnatomy · 15/11/2020 15:08

A customer left her purse when collecting her Click & Collect parcel at my workplace which has lots of £20 notes and I mean over £1000.

At the same time, it was a small store and I didn't trust my managers enough to tell them (the purse would have been emptied in seconds) so I used her name and address on her driving license to search her on the ordering system, got her number and called her to come collect her purse.

She was so grateful and I do not regret not telling management or logging it.

throwaway100000 · 15/11/2020 15:09

I did once. Just posted it back to their address on their license.

yumscrumfatbum · 15/11/2020 15:11

Yes definately. I've had my bank card returned to my local branch by a kind stranger. My son had his wallet posted back to him through the post almost a year after he lost it with a twenty pound note and his driving license in their. No note from the sender so couldn't say thanks but was so kind.

SlippersForFlippers · 15/11/2020 15:13

We found a tablet once. It didn't have a passcode on, we found a contacts app and sent a message to say we think you have lost your tablet, we have found it and handed it in.

I haven't ever found money in a wallet. I found a loose £5 note once when I was tidying up leaves in the garden.

throwaway100000 · 15/11/2020 15:15

I smashed the screen of my iPhone 11 Pro and didn’t repair it for a few weeks. I absentmindedly left it in random places (shop checkouts particularly) and it was handed in each time! I couldn’t get rid of it if I wanted to, I think people felt sorry for me as the screen was fucked

When I got it repaired, I left it in an Uber! The driver actually drove back to my house and his passenger handed it back to me in the pouring rain🥺

the80sweregreat · 15/11/2020 15:16

I'd return it and go out of my way to make sure I did! I hate losing things and I couldn't live with myself for not doing the right thing.
I m sorry you couldn't find it and probably someone has taken it I would imagine.
I hope karma catches up with them one day!

SingleHandSue · 15/11/2020 15:17

DH’s mate lives in a really rough area well known for drug dealings. He found a wallet with a fair amount of cash in outside his house one day. He put a photo of the driving license on our friends WhatsApp group to see if anyone recognised the lad in the picture.

The address was 100s of miles away in Cumbria which was strange. No one recognised the lad but after googling his name it turned out he was a boarder at the very posh school the other side of town. His name came up because he was captain of loads of the sports teams and was a champion rower.

Anyway DH’s mate was able to contact him through the school. Thinking the lad would be chuffed to have his wallet back he was very surprised to find the lad totally denying all knowledge of it being his wallet, he must be mistaken etc etc.

Posh boy clearly didn’t want mummy, daddy or the school to find out where he was spending snorting his money 😄

DH’s mates kids ended up with a nice trampoline for the summer instead.
