My glasses hurt - anyone had this?

I’ve been wearing glasses all the time for about 18 months. Initially I had some plastic ones from the budget range as they were the only ones I liked - had no trouble.

About July my eyesight worsened - went back for an eye test, prescription increased and I got a new pair. One was quite expensive, still plastic and very similar to my old ones in design but sprung hinges, from a designer range. Stumped up for anti-reflective lenses in that pair as was sick of zoom calls reflecting in my glasses.

Except they’re so uncomfortable I barely wear them and am just wearing my old ones even though they are weaker. They really hurt the tops of my ears and cause pain in both sides of my head. Maybe they’re just heavier? today I’ve put them on thinking i just need to get used to it.

I’ve had a lot going on the last few months and no time to go back, and now obviously it’s been a few months so I can’t really.

Any idea of anything that might help? Will I just get used to them?

You need them adjusting to fit. Go back to the opticians. I always find plastic without separate nose rests more comfortable

Yes, go back and get them adjusted.

Definitely go back - I bought the exact same frames when my prescription changed, and had to go back twice till they fit them just like my old pair

Titanium frames are really light and comfortable.

Thanks everyone - will go back and see if they can adjust them. It’s definitely worse on one side so I guess they need altering a bit

They can warm them up and adjust them. Don’t suffer! I’ve worn specs all my life and they have never hurt

BusterGonad · 14/11/2020 15:25

Yep, you just go back and they'll adjust the ear bits so they no longer dig in.

Hold one arm of the glasses at a time, (more towards the curved end that goes around your ear), over a boiling kettle. After about 20 seconds or so, tweak them ever so slightly at the end by pushing upwards. This allows you to reshape the end ever so slightly. The optician I go to showed me this trick. It saves time asking them to do it for you. I have to do this with every new pair of specs I get. I think it works using a hairdryer as well. There's probably videos on YouTube to help.

I had this. I went back and the next lady I saw told me that the ones I had picked were too small for me. I didn’t realise that glasses frames actually came in different sizes.

fluffiphlox · 14/11/2020 18:24

The optician can adjust them for you. Takes two minutes

SinkGirl · 14/11/2020 18:35

Thanks all - these definitely aren’t too small, the arms on them are really long and the width is fine, I think the curve is just too far forwards. Will Carefully see if I can gently do it myself with some heat but if not will go back :)

Don't try and do it yourself!

If you break or damage them you'll need to stump up for a brand new pair. Just go to your opticians - it takes two minutes to get them adjusted properly.
