Dog just ate a mouse

DD let the dog in whilst I was feeding the snakes, he snatched a defrosted mouse off the side, hes a huge dog (wolfhound cross) and it was a tiny pinky mouse so he had swallowed it whole before I could get to him.

Anyway, everything I can find on google is about eating wild mice/ones that might have been poisoned, these were frozen ones from a pet shop. Do I need to take him to the vet or will he be ok?

On another thread not so far away, someone's baby has just eaten a dead shrew, so I think your dog should be OK!

Borris · 12/11/2020 18:45

He’ll almost certainly be fine

icedaisy · 12/11/2020 18:47

Yeah fine. My dear old dogs favourite time of year was harvest and eating the field mice as dh moved the bales. She was huge by the end of the day.

It's ones where rat poison been put down you have to watch and get to vet ASAP.

WentworthPrison · 12/11/2020 18:49

It'll be absolutely fine. Some dogs eat an entirely raw diet. It's just like any other meat for them.

myhobbyisouting · 12/11/2020 18:49

At least your baby didn't eat a dead shrew

ApolloandDaphne · 12/11/2020 18:51

My lab loves to snuffle through grassy mounds to pounce on voles and mice. In her younger days she often caught them and wolfed them down with no ill effects!

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 12/11/2020 18:51

He's fine. It's meat designed for eating. Dogs eat mice just like cats do.

He should be fine - the risk is from poisoned mice

Those which are sold for consumption are definitely poisoned and will, also be disease free.

And your dog is big enough that there should be plenty of space for it to go down and be divested.

Remember some terriers were bred as ratters - do you really think they never ate part of what they caught?

You could ring OOH vet if you want to make sure

WankPuffins · 12/11/2020 18:52

I had two daft golden retrievers who would eat anything. I caught the daftest one chowing down on a dead rat once Envy - vomit

WhySoSensitive · 12/11/2020 18:53

My dogs eat rabbits, other than occasionally shitting out a rabbit foot... they’re fine. I wouldn’t worry.

Hoppinggreen · 12/11/2020 18:55

My Goldie ate a squirrels head once, he was fine

Hoppinggreen · 12/11/2020 18:56

My Goldie was fine I mean, the squirrel not so much

MrsGrindah · 12/11/2020 18:57

Yeah it’s just protein.

Springersrock · 12/11/2020 19:00

He’ll be fine

My dog likes to go and eat the dead bodies our bastard cat leaves on our patio given half a chance.

Veterinari · 12/11/2020 19:19

If you think the mouse is poisoned, why are you feeding it to your snake?
How do you think mice are poisonous to dogs and not to snakes? Why would a mouse be poisonous?
Confused

WhatKatyDidNxt · 12/11/2020 19:53

I’m sure he will be fine

Suzi888 · 12/11/2020 20:01

Yuck, I’ve seen the baby shrew post too lol I imagine DDog will be fine. If anything maybe a doggy tum, but I doubt it.

“My dog likes to go and eat the dead bodies our bastard cat leaves on our patio given half a chance.” Grin gross!

Whoops, phone reset and I forgot my password so am a little late replying. Doggo is fine although his breath absolutely stunk. He pops up every feeding time so I gather mouse is quite tasty. Although this is from the dog who thinks cat poo is the worlds greatest delicacy so I might not take his word for it.

@Veterinari I don't think the mouse was poisoned, the mouse was very good quality for snake dinner, I just didn't know if dogs could eat mice. I mean I don't feed the snakes dog food, and there are things I eat that the dog can't, so I thought it better to check.
