🎤On the National Express
There’s a jolly hostess
Giving porridge free
She’ll provide you with shots
amaretto or what
You like to seeeeee...

Going out was in style
Now we’re stuck in this aisle
Dream of being free
And it’s hard to get by
When your arse is the size
Of the furlough feeeeeee🎤

Bah ba ba la
Bah ba ba la

Tomorrow belongs to meee...

Welcome to the 17:38 to freedom, stopping at virtual hugs, critical discourse, and random tangents along the way. ETA unknown...
@LivinLaVidaLoki, that's one part of your life. And it sounds horrible and I'm sorry.

But there's another part of you that's been keeping these threads going and I don't think that we will ever truly appreciate the importance of these threads in this nightmare. We won't know how many people are lurking here clinging to a bit of sanity, grateful that at least a few people are keeping their heads 'while all about them are losing theirs and blaming it on them'.

So stick him/her and his/her lack of appreciation. Do your work up to your standard. And know you are doing something vital in another part of your life.
We quite often take it in turns to feel weighed down or have a bit of strength to bolster the rest of us, and that's fine.
Two weeks ago I was in a horrid, doomy, frequent sobby state. After feeling like that for 6 days I was seriously beginning to question whether I could get through the winter without intervention. Then it lifted and the last 10 days have been better.

It's ok to release it, to cry or vent, however. We will get through this together Flowers

Thank you so much for your responses. I really do love you all so much.

I did this piece of work this afternoon and I was so proud of it. We are supposed to be having an update meeting on Thursday about it but another manager involved has requested we put it back. So I did. Then I got an email from awful manager "lucky for you"
That's it.

On the flipside I had an email from one of our heads of service thanking me for a piece of work and telling me that I should be proud that I'm making a real difference.

So awful manager can do one today now as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, thank you all so much and I promise I'll be back to teaching you all greek swear words before you know it x

RobinHobb · 17/11/2020 17:51

Well done@LivinLaVidaLoki
You got this :-)

RobinHobb · 17/11/2020 17:57

I just saw a post from a ranting teacher. She said was vulnerable (but not very) whatever that means and she was finding worrying about getting the virus a strain. Ok well fair enough, although ffs it's only going to be a cold (I have encountered so many people now who have had covid and said it was just like a bad cold).
But the responses! Keep windows open and "tell the whinging children to wear base layers..." so it's ok to freeze 5 year old kids in the middle of winter?! It's absolutely insane - I cannot believe I am reading this. I know as a nation if people the British ARE hypochondriacs but this is the most disgusting thing I've read because it's low level cruelty that is actually being implemented in our schools. Sorry for being over emotional here about cruelty to kids being condoned like this....

TheOrchidKiller · 17/11/2020 18:01

Here's some irony I think the AD's will appreciate: all rainbows have been removed at work... "because of covid."

@LivinLaVidaLoki don't let the cowbag boss grind you down. I've had a few of those & I find they are often perfectionists who feel threatened by colleagues who are very good at their jobs, so they deal with the perceived threat by bullying others.

CruCru · 17/11/2020 19:01

Ah, there you all are.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/11/2020 19:11

If I hear or read 'it's for the greater good' one more time I'm going to fucking scream!

Yes I'm in a bad mood and I made the mistake of venturing over to the corona board.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 17/11/2020 19:17

As we've not had one in a while, greek swear of the month for November;

mou ta preexes

Its a way of saying "I've had enough of you/this"

Literal translation "you've swollen my balls"

HitchikersGuide · 17/11/2020 19:20

Just catching up.
Loki Sorry bosses have been shit. Where do these people come from? I've worked with some great colleagues but the number of managers with competence, commitment and people skills (or even one of those three!) have been few and far between! Self employed now partly for that reason.
As for the world 'out there', dear lord. We're clearly being prepped for continued lockdown in England, especially now those 4 areas of Scotland have gone to tier4. Ffs.

HitchikersGuide · 17/11/2020 19:21

Ooh I like 'you've swollen my balls'. Grin

Iheartmysmart · 17/11/2020 19:22

@PinkSparklyPussyCat Couldn’t agree with you more - it’s a hideous phrase. The only thing that keeps me going when I hear it is thinking about the film Hot Fuzz.

JamSarnie · 17/11/2020 19:40

Sorry to hear people struggling . I find my emotions vary day to day. I did like the tesco's advert amusing Grin

DrDiva · 17/11/2020 19:40

Livin I’m sorry it’s been so shit for you at work - you’re a million times better than your crap boss!
Do we get a pronunciation guide for the swearing?... Smile

amicissimma · 17/11/2020 19:45

I would have enjoyed the 'you've swollen my balls' thing so much more if I hadn't been eating meatballs when I read it.

Taswama · 17/11/2020 19:45

Brilliant! @TheOrchidKiller !

LivinLaVidaLoki · 17/11/2020 19:49

@DrDiva

Sorry I forgot.

Moo ta prick-sis

Have to admit though its hard to beat the flexibility and feel good factor of malaka!!!

I've just joined the dressing up for Christmas thread. I definitely want to wear something nice on Christmas day even if I'm not going to see anyone. Sod the "Christmas is cancelled" miserable lot. I'm also going to suggest mulled wine in the park to friends, assuming we're at least allowed to meet people outdoors. Thermos as the ready - we're going to get hammered in the park like teens, but with sensible base layers on and drinking better quality booze.

That sounds like so much fun.

Brilliant! @TheOrchidKiller !

My fury at the removal of the rainbow death-traps was tempered a little by the sight of the office carpet now stained with the dye of the hazard tape that was used to mark out points for staff to stand on. Yep, that's bright yellow stains on the new carpet that we got neurotic emails about being careful not to spill anything on when it was laid.

The joy of karma.

ValiumTowers · 17/11/2020 20:39

Evening - glad I found you all again. Flowers to everyone feeling low - I have swung in and out of the "depths of despair" to quote one of my favourite books for the past couple of weeks.

I am despairing at my local FB page where a couple of members have posted what seem to be deliberately inflammatory posts like "We are in the red" without further explanation - a bit like throwing a match into dry tinder and standing back to watch it blow up. The reality is that out of a population of over 5k we have 23 cases... An increase of 7 over the past week and a clear source that has been identified and measures taken to contain it. Anyone posting anything remotely sensible or reassuring is immediately shot down and I'm surprised the admin is not intervening. Will be muting it for the indefinite.

Reading these threads brings a sense of normality as does going into work on the rare days that we can where everyone is, fortunately, very lovely and sensible but can be downright daft at the same time. A much needed antidote to the hours spent alone WFH. My home is meant to be my sanctuary not a prison. Anyone else feel the same?

BeanMachine · 17/11/2020 20:50

I'm finally de-lurking to say hello and thank you all for the sanity here. I'm one of the Scots caught up in the move to level 4 as of Friday, just as we'd got my daughter back into some of her sports activities after a move to this area in the summer. The move has also meant that we have not had the chance to make any friends yet. Thank goodness for schools still being open, so at least my 2 DC have socialising opportunities.

Thoroughly fed up with it all, even though in reality we're not struggling compared to many.

@LivinLaVidaLoki - keep the Greek phrases coming, as they have made me chuckle and brought back some great memories: I was at uni with a Greek girl, who taught us a few things, including 'malaka'.

I also agree with the general sentiment that the NHS seems to have turned into this untouchable institution, which we need to look after at all costs. I have lived in several different countries and can see how wonderful the NHS is in many ways compared to health systems elsewhere, but also have my eyes open as to where it could do so much better.

flower11 · 17/11/2020 20:54

I did that at the end of the last lockdown with my friend. We sat on a bench and drank cans of gin from the Tesco metro. I got home at 11pm rather drunk and DH was like I thought you were going for a little walk!

Am I misremembering my Harry Potter, or wasn't that Grindelwald's motto?
MargosKaftan · 17/11/2020 21:09

@flower11 - gin in a can was made for such occasions!

Only downside is sensible, warm clothing doesn't lend itself well to al fresco wees.

Might need to invest in a shewee
