Soup...with rice??

I'm on a mission to eat what is in my cupboards etc before I do a big shop again.

I currently have 8 tins of Heinz soup....3x creamy chicken, 2x creamy mushroom, 3x chicken and sweetcorn. I also have loads of pasta and rice.

Would it taste nice if I cooked the rice/pasta, heated the soup and mixed it into the rice/pasta?? Or is that gross? I'm thinking as an evening meal.

Jamie Oliver does a mushroom soup and pasta bake recipe that’s really nice

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 11/11/2020 21:57

But to answer your question I don’t see why not Smile

Yes, loads of soup has rice in it. You could thicken the soup with corn flour to make in into sauce for pasta and vegetables. Maybe add some herbs.

My Panamanian friend always cooks amazing soup like dishes served with rice. Sounds strange but honestly the best meal!

There's a chicken soup from Surinam that they tend to add rice to. It's called Saoto. Maybe you can use that as inspiration to change your chicken soup into a meal with whatever you have in your cupboard.

I've often had rice in soup. Go for it.

MushMonster · 11/11/2020 22:05

We do use mushroom soup in some of our pasta sauces that have mushrooms. Not as only sauce, but to add mushroom flavour to it. Also it is creamy!
I do like rice soups too. So more like adding a bit of rice to a veggie soup with plenty of herbs, like dill. They are better if they are on the watery side, at least for my taste. Chicken goes well with them too.

Theres a Greek lemon and chicken soup that you make with rice and eat when you're ill. It's literally the best thing ever.

I often switch out the noodles for rice when I have ramen at work.

Soup with rice is The Best

I did Heinz tomato soup with white rice in once. It was more of a had fuck all else in but it was lovely. Bit like a risotto

When I was poor, I'd have tuna casserole. You put cooked pasta, tinned tuna and mixed veg in an ovenproof dish, then mix in a can of mushroom soup and top with cheese. You cook it till the cheese is brown and it makes good comfort food.

I'm guessing there must be something you can do with tomato soup and pasta too. Like use it instead of passata and make a cheese and tomato pasta bake?

My favourite soup is Thai Chicken Soup with rice in, its soooooo good.

AdoraBell · 11/11/2020 23:02

Yes, it will work.

DeRigueurMortis · 12/11/2020 00:23

It's quite a common culinary tradition in the US I believe to use canned soup (usually condensed soup) as the basis of a sauce.

I think if you used the soup to cook the pasta in the oven (and do a cheese topping) the pasta would suck up all the flavour and I think you'd have a really nice dish.

I'm less sure about rice but tbh I'm not sure why as the mushroom soup might make the basis for a nice risotto.

I'd probably partially cook the rice in water and then the mushroom soup to finish off.

Add some Parmesan to finish.

Ilovesausages · 12/11/2020 01:30

Could you add some extra chicken pieces or cheese?

Sounds great though! I’d eat that!

Eliards2012 · 12/11/2020 02:03

We make a chicken and rice dish, cook some diced chicken in a baking tray in the oven with salt n pepper. Then cover with dry rice, add 3 or 4 tins of soup and some water into the baking tray. Give the mixture a good stir then pop back in the oven for 30-40 mins! (Refil 2 tins with water and that should be plenty) ... could always make without chicken if you prefer Smile

Torvean32 · 12/11/2020 02:15

Condensed chicken soup makes a great pasta sauce.

Shortsinwinter · 12/11/2020 02:18

I would go for pasta over rice but I think either would work. If you have any potatoes, I really love a bowl of soup over creamy mash. Its my go to comfort food

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/11/2020 02:19

Chicken and rice soup is an actual thing, it's delicious.

Yes, see also: chips.

Love a veg soup & chips Smile

Dollywilde · 12/11/2020 03:58

Minestrone!

Also I firmly believe any tinned soup can be mixed with pasta for a pasta bake Smile

LivingInTheFog · 12/11/2020 05:30

I often did that when the DC were small. Left over soup on pasta or rice.

Mixedupworld · 12/11/2020 08:56

Lovely ideas, thank you!

It would be a sort of risotto, wouldn't it?
